“Good location, good value - but far from perfect”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 19, 2014

At a hundred Qs for a private room with en suite, this is the best value I found in Guate (when taking into account the location as well).
Contrary to a previous review, the location is safe (the previous reviewer must have the nerves of a miniature Chihuahua) on a wide, well lit side street, very close to the big fast food chains and close to many good restaurants around the Holiday Inn area. It's also good for the Transmetro (the cheap, new, clean and safe bus system in the city). Walk to either end of the street and you'll not be waiting long for a taxi.
The bad bits - no wifi (despite the lady owner saying I could use the restaurant's next door, the restaurant knew nothing of this agreement and it wasn't working anyway). The room smelled a bit of damp and the en suite could have done with a good scrub.
That said, you get what you pay for and I wasn't unduly unhappy with this place

You can see it used to be a nice place, but now it's in a very bad shape and it's really filthy, with cockroaches entering into your bags. The only good thing is the localization. This place was our worst experience ever.

I found Hostal Plaza on TripAdvisor, and the Moon guide also recommended it, so I shot off an e-mail to make a reservation. Killer prices and close proximity to La Aurora Airport make a great combo.

However, there were small bumps at the beginning of our visit. First, the taxi driver took us to Hotel Plaza which seriously looked like it was housed in a prison. Yikes. So, have the exact address of Hostal Plaza. Then we finally got to Hostal Plaza using another taxi driver, but there is no sign, and you have to be let in. The management are not on-site all the time, and there was some confusion about our arrival time, but in the end, it all worked out, thanks in part to our friendly taxi driver and some nice folks in the neighborhood who were willing to make calls on our behalf.

One bed was missing sheets, but that was quickly resolved. The people running the hostel are very eager to please. Sadly there was no wifi, and the shower curtain in the private bathroom could be replaced. I did like the location, within walking distance to Zona Viva and in a safe area. And you can't beat the prices!

There is a kitchen for guests which I made use of. If you just want to chill, the center courtyard has tables and chairs, and beautiful magenta-colored flowers were blooming when I was there. I even saw a hummingbird!

They can call a taxi for you to the airport or wherever, but bear in mind that it won't come right away. The airport is pretty close by. We just hailed a taxi off the street and didn't have any problems.

Be sure to make a reservation beforehand and state your arrival time!

It is a very nice place, cheap, clean, and well located in a quite safe area. The rooms are big, with cable TV, and clean bathroom. The buses going downtown are one block from the hostel. Margarita, a very friendly houskeeper, is always ready to help you, as well as José, the gardener, (who was my personal tourist guide). I received the personal attention of the owner, Don Luis, who is a great guy, friendly and very talkative. in fact, he gave me a small, but free, sightseeing tour. There is a small kitchen that is shared by the people in the hostel, always there are free coffe and tea. They don´t have pickup service from (neither to) the airport, but Margarita can get a very safe taxi to go to the airport. If you like fastfood there is a Kentucky Fried Chicken at the corner of the street, and a McDonalds about 100 mts. If you want Guatemala food, there are in the area some small restaurants very cheap. Just next door, there is a restaurant, but only serves lunch. It is a quite noise, because the airport is nearby. There is a free wireless internet, but it only works on the patio.

I recently stayed at Hostel Plaza in Guatemala City and loved it. The rooms were very clean and comfortable and there was a beautiful courtyard to enjoy the sun in and relax. The cost of the rooms are also very good value. Furthermore, the owners were very kind and helpful people, whose hospitality was AMAZING. Not only did they help us with gaining orientation in the city but they also made us feel very safe and comfortable. The hostel is also very close to a variety of fast food outlets, a shopping centre and the airport. I would definitely recommend the hostel if you are in Guatemala City!!!

This little unmarked hostel is very near the airport and close to popular fast food outlets such as Kentucky Fried Chicken and Pizza Hut. It is located at 6a Avenue "A", 13-52 Zona 9. The number is 502 5417 2143. Plain, clean and handy. There's even a piano to play! It was easy to make an early morning flight from here.

I stayed one night just before flying out of the airport in the morning (closeby and only Q.25 by taxi to get there--the minimum fee at this time). The room was nice with private bath/shower and good tv service. They arranged a taxi for me at 4am and were up at that hour to make sure I was up and ready and let me know when it arrived. There's a few American restaurants very close by and a couple of comedores even closer. The internet was down while I was there (night of the Pancaya eruption with sand raining down). They need to put a sign up however, since all you see is the entrance door with the address on it.
