We spent a wonderful few days in February with Ian and Kate (the best host and hostess in the world!). So spoiling to have tea brought to the room in the morning and delicious supper in the evening. Suggestions for tours spot on. Gurafina village well worth a visit and making your own chocolate from scratch at Cyrilas great fun. Highlight was seeing the beautiful brightly coloured bees (fairies!!) that pollinate the vanilla orchids that Ian managed to lure to a nearby tree for us to photograph. In all a magical experience and one not to be missed if you are in the Punta Gorda area. Thank you Ian and Kate

Room Tip: I think all the rooms would be lovely and excellent value all with fluffy towels.

We really enjoyed our recent visit to Hickatee Cottages. We stayed in the Wilby Suite and it was really charming and lovely. The bed was comfortable, the showers were hot with big fluffy towels, and the sitting area was nice to enjoy the coffee and tea that was delivered to our cottage each morning (a nice perk). Ian and Kate are super nice and funny. They totally make the place! They both go out of their way to ensure you have a great travel experience in the local area. They make suggestions for activities, restaurants, etc and their advice is spot on. They have a real love for the area and focus on using local products and supporting local tourism. Having drinks and meals at Charlie's Bar was also fun because you got to meet the other travelers and hear of their adventures. It's also nice to have the cats lounging around the bar, but if you aren't a cat person I think it would be fine because they keep to themselves and don't jump on you or anything. Wednesday night drumming was a real highlight. Ray is sweet and patient with his students that miss a beat (or two!). We walked the jungle paths, didn't see any wildlife that day but we only did go up there once. The grounds are lovely. The town of Punta Gorda is laid back and we found the locals to be warm, friendly, and helpful. If we return to Punta Gorda some day we would definitely want to stay at Hickatee Cottages again!

Room Tip: We loved Wilby Suite because of the sitting area and queen bed. It also has a nice garden area with...

Ian is a very knowledgeble and friendly host who helped us find fun and interesting activities to do nearby. We especially liked the swimming cave tour and ethnic lunch, the snorkeling at Snake Caye, the Garfuna drumming, and our dinners at Ashas restaurant on the water in Punta Gorda.

Room Tip: All the rooms are nice but there are different sizes to choose from.

While on the bus entering Punta Gorda from the north, I kept passing shabby, run down hotels and kept thinking "Wow, I'm sure glad I'm not staying there". This continued all the way into the bus station. Fortunately, I had pre-arranged far superior accommodation. I rang up Hickatee Cottages from the bus terminal and a car came out to get me in no time, and drove me back to Hickatee. Beautiful, shaded grounds, efficient staff (I often found my cottage had been maid-serviced in the short time I was enjoying breakfast), plenty of birdlife, some nice walking tracks, exemplary cottages (think English B&B with a definite Belizean decor theme, all spotless and homey), free use of a bicycle to check out the town (about 2 miles away), and best of all, the most efficient, friendly and good-natured hosts you could ask for - Ian and Kate. These two seem to really enjoy doing what they do, and they're damn good at it too. Ian helped me organize phone calls to get myself out to a remote Kekchi village, assisted me with sorting out a last-minute decision to go out to a reef island, and was generally a great bloke eager to help make my stay both at Hickatee and in Belize in general as positive and successful as possible. Can't thank him enough.

Seriously, there is absolutely no better value for money in PG than this place. It's the perfect antidote to long dusty bus rides and the stresses of travel - a truly restful, welcoming oasis in the Toledo area.

The food is fresh and first-rate (Kate is a culinary hero), and Ian even hand-delivers your selected dose of caffeinated beverage to your cottage door in the morning if you like.

If you're in Punta Gorda for a while and want to try a different place for dinner, I can also recommend the fresh cornmeal-breaded snapper at the Mangrove Inn (you'll need a taxi).

I wish there were more places like this on my travels - it's hospitality at its peak!

Sincerely, Kevin Casey (the Remote River Man)

My husband and I traveled to Punta Gorda in late November and stayed in town for several days before heading to Hickatee Cottages. We did not have great luck with the weather (as it rained most of the time we were there) but we definitely enjoyed our stay due to the fact that both Ian and Kate were such wonderful hosts. They answered questions, invited us to use their expansive library with books covering many subjects regarding Belize, shared some absolutely marvelous Cacoa liqueor and basically entertained us. Ian was our chauffer to town and explained the changes he and Kate had seen in PG since their arrival, as well as lecturing (academically of course) on the flora, fauna and insect/butterfly world they live in.
The cottages were beautifully done. The bottle of fresh water in the room each day was a nice touch. The food was incredible. If you don't mind being out a bit from the comforts of the "city" this is a great place to stay.
Thank you Kate and Ian. I am sorry it took so long to write this review.

You must travel to Punta Gorda and when you do you must stay at The Hickatee. An amazing offering by hosts Ian and Kate and their staff. You will not want to leave you beautiful cottage constructed of Belizian wood, bright white linens, colorful decor and modern, tiled/wood bathroom. Each cottage has a desk, chair and the larger one has a living room are to sleep 2 extra people. The grounds are extremly well kept. Coffee is delivered to you room at your request and the homemade bread or rolls that Kate makes each night for breakfast is a supper treat. Kate is a gourmet cook. Our dinners there of soup, salad, entree, beverage and desert with occassional Belizian lluqour were fantastic. Ian is abound with information about birds, animals, plants, local lore, things to see and do. We stayed 6 days and didn't want to leave. The price is just the icing on the cake. They also got us to the bus station at 5:50 am for our inexpensive trip back up to Belize City which you should skip all together.

Room Tip: The are all great. Depends on how many are traveling. Kate is more than helpful. They are off the...
