Everything about The Lodge exceeded the descriptions in the brochure, on the website and our expectations. The owners Rob and Marta live on the premises and are always on hand to provide service, advice and local knowledge. They have found the perfect balance between exclusivity, friendliness and comfort and guests are immediately made to feel welcome.

The delightful cabanas are well spaced around the extensive gardens and ours was tucked away at the edge of the river offering privacy and the feeling that you are in your own tropical oasis. Birdwatching from the hammock on your own verandah is a very relaxing past-time! If your time allows it is good to have a day or two to relax at The Lodge and really appreciate its setting, as well as taking trips out.

Various day trips can be organised directly from The Lodge and they are designed to offer a real insight into the country and its people. When we were there, the number of people on trips averaged around 6 so you had the full benefit of the knowledgeable resident guide. We took an outstanding trip to an organic cacao farmer's property to see what 'organic' really means to a Belize farmer working his property from morning to night ,on his own, without pesticides or machinery (after he has walked for over an hour up a steep hillside to reach it, although transport was provided for us ). Green & Black's chocolate will always now bring back these memories and I will appreciate each mouthful! After sampling their traditional cocoa drink in the farmer's native home, the afternoon that day was spent kayaking downstream back to the Lodge, spotting iguanas in the trees.

The owners of this special place love their Lodge and Belize and it shows. We would wholeheartedly recommend it to travellers who want their creature comforts provided in a simple, unobtrusive way by a highly individual hotel. Well done Rob and Marta!

I stayed here in the middle of an Island Expeditions Tour. The lodge and each individual cabana were fantastic. Rob and Marta were friendly and fun to talk with during our stay. The food, both breakfast and diner were good and they prepared both for the vegitarians and vegans in our party.

very friendly staff in a beautiful area of Belize, many activities to do locally (snorkeling from Punta Gorda, visit local villages and Maya sites, bird watching, etc.). The accomodations are comfortable and well integrated in the scenery. The only thing that could be improved is the food with more variety and more options.

After deciding that we wanted to see even the briefest glimpse of the Toledo district (we were by now running out of time), we contacted the Lodge at Big Falls by e-mail and received a very prompt and informative reply. As we were travelling totally out of season, we were the only guests (two adults and a four year old) and came back to the UK absolutely delighted with our stay. Rob and his staff made us feel very welcome. Our cabana was beautiful and set in superb grounds carefully thought out to include a wide variety of trees and shrubs which seem to attract hundreds of birds and butterflies. The place was so serene and peaceful, in the bend of a river.
The cabana boasts a beautiful bathroom overlooking its own very private garden, Mexican tiles, a very efficient ceiling fan, a double bed and a single bed, a little desk and chair. Drinking water and glasses are supplied. There is also a verandah with seats and the compulsory hammocks. The main lodge has a reference centre with books, posters, computer etc. There is also a very pleasant bar and a restaurant, lots of games available (from frisbee to table tennis, Boggles etc.), a telescope, a small gift shop etc. Nothing has been forgotten.
Even though we were the only guests, we were offered an good selection of dishes for lunch and the food was not only delicious but also plentiful. It was great to see that The Lodge at Big Falls really knows how to look after its guests, including the younger ones. Our daughter's culinary tastes are fairly limited but were wholly catered for and she got lots of little extras such as bananas, corn flakes etc. There was plenty to keep her occupied, walks, birds, butterflies, swimming pool etc. The Lodge also offers a huge variety of visits locally (rice mill, cocoa making place, Maya ruins, Maya villages etc.) as well as activities such as tubing down the river. Rob has obviously done a huge amount of homework and is very knowledgeable about the area.
We really wish we could have stayed longer and made better use of the facilities and activities on offer. Anyone visiting Belize should make the trip down to Toledo and The Lodge. It is not so much on the tourist trail as San Ignacio, Placencia or the Cayes, but has a lot to offer, great diversity and lots of local interest. It caters for everyone's needs and would be ideal for couples, families with children (even very young), birdwatchers, travellers with more general interests.

This was the second place we stayed during our trip to Belize.

I loved this resort. The owners were really kewl, and really made us feel not like guests, but like family/friends. The owners' dogs were adorable and took us for a walk along the hiking trails. It made us miss our dogs at home less, at least for a couple minutes........

Our room was very nice, and I loved the shower overlooking greenery. Our bed was very comfy and the ceiling fan providing just enough cool air. I really liked our deck with hammocks as well.

The grounds were gorgeous and I got many good shots of flowers as well.

The pool looked very nice, but we did not use it.

The only thing I did not like was lack of food. We were the only guests and stopped in for a room as a walk-in, so I dont blame the resort for no staff working.... But, we were starving and the selection of food in the area is horrible. We finally found a really cute place called Colemans though, and had a great time.

I highly recommend this resort.
