“A Piece of Paradise in Placencia”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 10, 2014

Far from the "Madding Crowd" is the Chabil Mar on the quiet peninsula of Placencia and a pleasant walk from Placencia Village. Chabil Mar is beautifully situated on the Caribbean with white sand beaches and all the luxuries of the best city hotel. A small boutique hotel of villas graciously appointed and complete with fully equipped kitchens offers a full restaurant menu served anywhere on the premises. We had breakfasts on our porch and lunches on the beach. The open air bar nestled among the villas serves incredible drinks--pina coladas are made from scratch! The vibe is very laid back and the Chabil Mar lives up to its "barefoot luxury" description. Hotel staff is friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. We booked three tours through Chabil Mar and were treated to excellent guides who gave us a a great deal of insight into the Belizean culture, history, and politics. A short walk or bike ride into the village gave us a taste of Belize with its brightly colored cottages, shops, and many casual restaurants and beach bars.

Room Tip: All rooms are prime. We stayed in the honeymoon villa for one night that was out of this world. Vill...

We stayed at Chabil Mar at the end of January, 2014 to celebrate our 36th anniversary. It was the second leg in a package that included 3 nights at Hatchett Caye and 4 nights at Chabil Mar. What a lovely welcome...smiles at arrival, a lovely tour of the grounds with Azalea on the way to our room, and cold drinks on arrival. But we were totally thrilled by villa #6 - on the second floor with a wrap-around veranda looking right out over the beach and ocean with a spectacular full view. Inside was a complete surprise - a full two-bathroom suite with kitchenette, sitting area and king-sized bedroom, all lavishly furnished. A bottle of champagne was delivered as we were touring the rooms. Azalea took the time to explain our package and meal plan, and being a bit OCD, I really appreciated the organization that went into our visit. A short time after Azalea left, we had a visit from the tour director, Tiffany, who assisted us with booking a tour to the Mayan ruins and Monkey River. Then we just sat back and soaked it all in...

This resort is beautiful, clean, quiet and beautifully managed. My husband swears the shower was the best he has ever experienced on a trip. We returned from our tour the next day to find chocolate bars left in our suite...lots of nice little touches. The staff at the front desk are pleasant and helpful. Natalie, in particular, never lost her charming smile despite my husband's rant over a bad meal in town and our breakdown with a golf cart...the golf cart incident was too funny, we took one into town to do some shopping, and in the midst of the road it stopped moving forward and would only go backwards! We called Chabil Mar and Natalie was so apologetic, sending out someone with a new cart right away. We were able to continue our shopping with no problem and have a laugh with Natalie when we got back.

Meals at Chabil Mar were served wherever we wanted to eat. We had all of our breakfasts out on our verandah, lunches were arranged on the tours, and two dinners were at the resort. The food was great. Despite being gluten-free, I was always able to find good choices on the menu. The waiters were friendly and never complained about having to trek all over the resort to deliver meals.

The next time we go back to Belize (and we will go back, no doubt about that!), Chabil Mar will be our go-to spot.

Room Tip: Second floor rooms get the benefit of cooling breezes. Villa #6 is the best in the place...

I stayed at Chabil Mar in January 2014 to celebrate my daughter's birthday. We loved it so much, I returned this January with my husband . Despite some unseasonal rain , we had a wonderful time! The villas were lovely ( we stayed in two different ones during our week stay) and the grounds gorgeous. What sets Chabil Mar apart, though, is the warmth, friendliness and enthusiasm of the staff, especially Natalie. We love the casual vibe of Placencia, and definitely plan to return to Chabil Mar!

I recently spent a few nights here while on a 10 day trip through Belize and this was definitely my favorite stop. From the moment you get a welcome drink and cool washcloth upon arrival you know that this hotel is on a different level than other "luxury" hotels in the area. The concierges, Natalie & Merli, were on top of everything and always eager to help. The bartender was always cheerful and engaging and the entire wait staff acted like they knew you personally. Ordering food was so easy and convenient, you'd just dial 240 from the phone in your room, place your order, and they'd bring you food in 10-15 mins. You could eat inside in your luxury villa, outside on your balcony or terrace, at the bar, at the pool, or at their open air restaurant - it didn't matter, wherever you wanted to eat they'd deliver it to you.

The property itself is gorgeous, just 20 lavish but tasteful villas located directly on the beach. There are two pools, a bar, lounge, beach chairs, and a dock out over the water to swim from. The villas themselves were first class - flat screen TVs, AC, ceiling fans, fully furnished kitchens, and comfy king size beds. The location is pretty convenient too - it's on a great stretch of white sand beach and just two miles from the town of Placencia so it's close to restaurants, bars, and a bit of shopping if you leave the hotel. If you go into town to eat at night they even include a free shuttle every hour from 4-10 PM. It's first class all the way, I'd say hands down the most luxurious hotel in Placencia.

Room Tip: I stayed in the Partial SeaView Villa on the first floor (#13) and I could see the ocean just fine f...

My husband and I spent 4 nights at Chabil Mar in Placencia. Everything about it was absolutely wonderful. We were in Villa #6, it was beautifully and luxurioulsy furnished with a breath-taking view of the Caribbean. The villa had a very well equiped kitchen, so we made our own breakfasts and lunches, and ate on our patio. There are plenty of little groceries close by, you can easily stock up on food. Villa #6 has 2 gorgeous bathrooms and a stunning master bedroom. There is also a second bedroom which is available if you need it.

Chabil Mar is beautifully landscaped and much attention paid to detail and keeping the facility looking good. There are so many nice touches. Cool fruit drinks were offered to us as we checked in. There are bicycles and kayacks available for your use. Housekeeping tried very hard to service the villa on a schedule that was convenient for us.

One of my favorite things about Chabil Mar was the food service. They do not have a dining room on the premises. There is a menu in your villa, and you can order food whenever you want. It will be delivered to you wherever you want on the premises. Your villa, your verandah, the pool, the beach, the gazebo, Wherever. The food was excellent. My husband LOVED the fish chowder, he ordered it every night. It was so convenient to have the food when and where we wanted. One night I was already in my pajamas when we ordered dinner, very convenient and comfortable. And it was always delivered with a smile and warmth, even in a driving rain.

During our stay at Chabil Mar the weather was not great , but we still enjoyed every minute of our time there. We did the Monkey River trip, which is not to be missed. Placencia is a great little town with a real Caribbean vibe to it. Yes, there are plenty of insects, hey, it's a tropical country. On our one really sunny hot day we also had a lot of lizards visiting us, big iguanas walking all over the patio, railings and in the greenery. Maybe not a good idea to leave the door open!

I also want to compliment Chabil Mar on it's excellent staff. Natalie at the front desk was particularly warm, friendly and efficient. She took such good care of us! She phoned us to see if we were OK, or if we wanted something. She walked over to our villa to check if we wanted to arrange any trips or snorkeling for the next day. She is an exemplary staff member. But all the staff were super. After our Monkey River trip my sneakers were an appaling mess, covered with mud. How to clean them? A nice young man got a scrub brush for me, and a bucket of water. I made quite a mess in the cleaning process, mud all over everything. I apologized, and he was so very gracious, insisting that the extra work I had made for him were no problem at all.

Chabil Mar is a beautiful vacation spot. If you are traveling to Belize, be sure to include a stop at Chabil Mar.

Room Tip: Pay the extra money and get a villa overlooking the Caribbean. It's worth it.

My husband and I just returned from Chabil Mar after celebrating his 50th birthday, and I couldn't wait to review! We were looking for a quiet romantic getaway to de-stress and reconnect, and Chabil exceeded our expectations. The grounds were beautiful and peaceful, many times feeling as if we had the whole place to ourselves. The concept of having your meal where you choose is genius- no need to get out of your pajamas for breakfast! The staff is so friendly and accommodating that we felt guilty even asking for something. Even when delivering our dinner in the pouring rain, they did it with a smile! The rooms were very clean and comfortable, and the bed was as comfortable as our own at home (that says a LOT). We only had a seaview room but the view everyday from the veranda was fabulous. The beach and the grounds were kept spotless, and you never had to fight for a good spot in the lounge chairs like you do at so many resorts, there are enough for everyone! The location to the village is a real plus- should you take the shuttle, bike, walk or cart there it's only minutes away. The food was excellent! We had an all-inclusive package and usually had more food than we could eat. The couples massage on the beach was a real treat, and I regret not booking several more! Generally I'm ready to get home at the end of a trip, but I can honestly say I had tears in my eyes on our last morning. The only cons to the trip were the sand fleas (I never remembered to use my Deet) and the cool, cloudy weather- neither of which are under Chabil Mars' control. We look forward to coming back soon with our whole family. The only way our trip could have been better was to have it been longer...

Chabil Mar is truly a gem. The grounds are immaculate and the setting is extraordinary-- beautiful and peaceful. Our second floor villa was spacious, well-equipped, clean, and really just ideal. Most importantly, the staff were incredibly attentive and helpful, always eager to be of assistance. We made use of the complimentary kayaks and bicycles, which was a really nice touch! It was great having the opportunity to dine anywhere at the resort-- we enjoyed meals on our villa deck, by the pool, and on the lovely pier. Our thanks go to everyone who made our stay there relaxing and truly enjoyable. We also enjoyed have the wonderful village of Placencia which is so close at hand, taking advantage of its many offerings, from dining to shopping. Our favorite was Rutti-Tutti, where they have the most amazing Gelato. Belize is a country with a lot to offer, and Chabil Mar was the perfect base from which to explore it.
