I went down to Placencia with three friends for a week and we stayed at this hotel. The hotel owners (Lisa and George) live on the premises (in the penthouse) and are very friendly, always available for assistance but not in the least bit intrusive. Breakfast is served each day (local fruit and coffee). The hotel is located in the centre of town, within easy walking distance to all shops and restaurants, and off the beach, with access to the private/public white beach. Kayaks and snorkelling equipment is available to borrow free of charge and you can take them out to the corals around the mangrove (1 km away) - we were able to see sting rays and barracudas there! Internet is available for a nominal fee per hour. The rooms were clean and air-conditioned. The four of us stayed in the family suite, which was comfortable and cost-effective. The ocean-view rooms for two people upstairs were better furnished than the family suite but slightly more expensive.
Trips to the barrier reef are available through any of the local shops and we did two snorkelling trips. NiteWind, the one recommended by Lisa, was perfect in everyway (imagine taking a boat to an island 10 meters wide with your own private chef who cooks lunch for you while you snorkel on the largest living reef in the world - $70US for the day).
For food, I would recommend the Trattoria – home made pasta, the best we’d ever had in all our travels around the world (with the exception of one person in the group who ranked it second best, after a restaurant in Rome). Lisa will book a reservation for you. The Italian wife is the fabulous cook, and the New Yorker husband is the charming bartender/host.
I'd come back here again to Placencia, and to WestWind. I would recommend it to my friends and family also. This is NOT a 5-star resort for $300US per night. This is a clean, well-kept, relaxed place for couples, single travellers, small families, or small groups, who want an affordable stay with a perfect location on the beach.
