“My new favorite place on Earth”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 12, 2011

What a wonderful time we had at the Green Parrot. We rode their bikes to Placencia, kayaked in the Caribbean, and walked along the beautiful beach. We especially liked the hammock on our porch and out on the dock so we could sit around and read our books as the waves gently crashed onto shore.

We ate way better than we were expecting we would - the food was great and Isabel made it any way we wanted it. Theresa was a wonderful host in the restaurant and made a great Bailey's Colada from behind the bar.

We felt much safer in Placenia than other caribbean locations we have visited. Even as we rode our bikes through the poor village of Seine Bight on our way to Placencia we found nothing but friendly folks the entire time.

If you are looking for the big resort experience this may not be the place for you. We found the rustic cabanas to be very romantic, but if you are expecting all of the amenities of a resort hotel room, you will be dissappointed. On the other hand, you will never get a room as close to the ocean or enjoy the beach as much at a big resort.

We will definately return to the Green Parrot.

Entire experience was outstanding! Service was second to none by locals who were extremely gracious, caring, and loaded with wonderful stories to share. Cabanas were unique, comfortable, and fun to stay in. The Resort provides books to read and board games to play on lazy days- kayaks, snorkeling gear and bicycles to ride for exploring. Restaurant and bar were wonderful and the food was great and very reasonable! Riding bikes up and down the side streets daily was my favorite thing-watching the sun rise, the birds, the dolphin come in at a close second. This resort offers something for everyone and I can't wait to go back!

We absolutely loved our stay at the Green Parrot! The thatched roof cabana was clean with incredible views of the Caribbean. We loved the outdoor shower. The food was wonderful and Isabella accommodated our special requests. Leo was a great tour guide and the other staff including Cameron, Theresa and Alaina were all very pleasant and welcoming. The resort is well maintained, quiet and a great place to relax and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.

After viewing photos of the Green Parrot and reading copious rave reviews on TripAdvisor, we were eagerly anticipating a beautiful beach and a relaxing end to our Central American vacation.  Upon arrival, we were charmed by the clear, quiet sand beach, clear green Caribbean water, kayaks at our disposal, and a lovely dock with a thatched roof hut complete with hammocks for lounging by the sea.

We had paid for our cabana in advance: US$150/night plus taxes and service fees for four nights of enjoyment.  Unfortunately, we encountered some major issues that did not, in our opinion, adequately reflect this price point. We were, frankly, incredibly disappointed, especially after TripAdvisor established such high expectations.

The outdoor shower, which altered between freezing and burning, used yellow water whose metallic odor lingered on our skin. We considered that this problem might be pervasive in Placencia; however, we didn’t see discolored water in any of the other restrooms we used, including at other hotels.

The cabana was generally shabby. The couch was so shabby that a shabby beach towel was spread across it, presumably to hide the shabbiness of the couch. The lighting was poor enough to make it difficult to see at night.

Security was lacking. The "safe" at the front office was simply a plastic box with a lock that anyone could carry off.

We understood that we were primarily paying for beach access, and we were not expecting luxury at the Green Parrot.  However, for US$150/night, it would have been nice to have a clean water supply and a more secure way to store our belongings.  We could have found lodging for a fraction of the price if we were interested in making those sorts of compromises.  Also, given that Maya Beach is somewhat isolated and we happened to be stuck with stormy weather, we were especially disappointed to be stranded at such a run-down facility.

We did enjoy the beach access, the kayaks, and some other Placencia establishments that provided nicer facilities, better food, and a particularly excellent coconut daquiri. But we did not enjoy our stay at the Green Parrot and are honestly perplexed by all the positive feedback on TripAdvisor. Maybe we missed something?

This was our second time at the Green Parrot, and we brought friends along this time. I am hesitant to go back to a place that was awesome the first time for fear it would not live up to the memory. This time it was even more amazing. Returning guests, especially will find you return to what feels like family. Belize is a wonderfully welcoming, laid back country with so diverse and interesting culture, history, environment, and people. Green Parrot epitomizes all that Belize is. David and Linda, the owners, are very concientious proprietors who understand the value of treating staff well, which is evident in the manager, Leo and family, who have been with them since Leo was a young man who started as a beach caretaker. They pay special attention to meeting the guest needs and wants. Leo's relationships in the community are especially valuable as he knows THE BEST guides and service providers for excursions. We highly recommend guests do the fishing/snorkeling with Alrin from Monkey River, ride bikes into Seine Beight and/or Placencia, and hang out at the resort with the wonderful staff. Missing the Belikin already!

We just returned from Belize and what an adventure. I will not give you all of the stories about the good time we had, but I will share with you what a special place we stayed at and the people that run it.

We booked a week in October at the Green Parrot. Right on the beach, private cabanas, easy access to diving and other land based tours. The facilities are wonderful - clean and well cared for, good food, clean beach, friendly people. Who could ask for anything more. It turns out that October is not a busy travel month in Belize so we had the facility almost to ourselves.

All was going just great, until this univited guest named Richard showed up. Turns out Richard was a tropical storm/hurricane heading toward Belize. Well, we like adventure, but I need to be back in the US for a business meeting on Monday. So we cut our trip short, Leo got us on a plane out of Placencia and we made it out a day before Richard arrived in Belize.

I have been in touch with Leo - and Richard never made it to the Green Parrot, but did show up in Belize City. We thank the staff of the Green Parrot for working with us to make our trip such a wonderful success. It is the caring people that make you want to come back for another visit. And we will. Can't say enough good things about what they did for us.
