My wife and I had a grand stay at the Green Parrot during May. We were looking for a place where we could just relax on the beach (which the Parrot has the best in the area, that we saw), take a few trips, and relax at night after a fine meal (which they all were).

If you are looking for night life - try another spot. If you are looking to relax, have a great chat with the bar tender (Ruben) or listen to some discusson about Belize from the manager (Leo), then this is the place to be.

Do you want French food? Go to France. Do you want home cooked food from Belize - go to the Green Parrot beachfront open restaurant. Every day there is somthing new on the menu - why, because they buy the stuff fresh ever day from the local vendors. None of the frozen stuff. All fruits and vegies are picked the day you eat them. So you just wait for dinner to see if the fresh red snapper came in from the fisherman off the coast - he actually drops the stuff off at the dock!
Rooms are clean and are cleaned daily. The property is very well maintained and is very clean.
No TV so you may have to talk to people.
Tours are fun. We like the one to Monkey River. Great tour guide we had named, Clive. He knows his stuff about the area and the wild life. Nice to eat at his mothers diner in Monkey River - great rice and beans.

I guess the question is - would we come back. You bet we would! When you leave you feel like you are part of the family. Also we felt on our next trip we would stay longer. They actually have a nice little library that we borrowed from. If you are coming bring a couple of extra books to leave with them. They have a hard time getting books in Belize - the owners actually bring them down from the U.S.

So I hope this review helps in your planning.

I just got back from the Green Parrot and had such a good time I felt I just had to write a review. I found out about the Green Parrot on trip advisor and just wanted to share some the great time I with the rest of you. This place is a hidden jewel. I had such a great time. the whole staff was wounderful. I was treated like a king. Leo(who is the manager) was outstanding. Everything about the place was wounderful. from the view to the tours to the food, i could go on for hours. Please take my word for it, if going to Belize give this piece of paridice a chance. YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!!!! Thank you again Green Parrot for the time of my life!!!!

The Green Parrot is an 8 unit cabana lodge midway on the Placencia peninsula in a small area known as Maya Beach. Each unit is a separate dwelling, and there is a central, open air restaurant and small bar. The staff will pick you up for no extra charge at the Placencia Airstrip if you fly in as we did. About 8 people are on staff, Leo is the manager, Rubin the assistant manager, Isabella the cook, Gloria one of the bartenders. We enjoyed talking to them all and comparing experiences, etc.

The cabanas are nicely built and maintained: housekeeping comes in every day if you want. Our unit was about 350 square feet including the sleeping loft, and combined a living area with couch and rocking chair, a makeup desk, and small kitchen with fridge. All simply but tastefully decorated. Cistern water for washing, filtered water for drinking.

The food is good, and your room charge includes a continental breakfast of bread, fruit, juice and hot beverage.

The staff will help you with any tours you want, and it is great just to enjoy the surf a few feet from your door. There are a few other lodges within walking distance, and maya beach hotel has an excellent, popular restaurant (and appears to be the oldest establishment in Maya Beach). The dirt road to the village or up and out to the highway is a rough, washboard mess. But expect that when it is finally paved, sleepily vibrant placencia peninsula will erode to the usual tourist horde experience. so go now.

We loved the Green Parrot and its staff and could not give it a higher recommendation for a peaceful, engaging beach spot.

My husband and I spent a week at the Green Parrot in March of 2005. I did not write a review back then, but as I person that likes to travel I appreciate hearing other travelers’ experiences (now I feel that's actually needed).
As with most things there are the good and the bad. It’s a small place with just a few (I think less than 10 cabanas). The food is not bad and the service is friendly; however, and here comes my major issue, the price was not reasonable at all for such a basic place. And I mean basic; the cabanas do have a little fridge, but ours was very rusty. The closet, the bathroom and everything in the cabana had a completely unfinished (almost careless) look. It was like hardly any care was put in building a cozy and nice place.
It did bother me that the cabanas were so close to each other that privacy was almost non-existent or difficult at the very least. I expected a place a bit more put together and maintained; some landscaping and care could not have hurt.
The beach was nice, not bad to sit back and relax. By the time we went there it was the end of winter and I was desperate for some tropical warmth; I do resent that some capitalize on that and charge steep prices for a resort that does not show what you’re paying for.
I’m by no means a spoiled traveler that expects luxury and high-end things all the time; but if I’m paying a not-so-cheap price I do expect something in return.
Just to be fair, I was there in 2005; I hope things have changed for the better and more recent visitors have received more than I did; but would not place my bets on that. Let this be my word of caution.

Management response from ParrotDave, Owner
(Management representative)
Apr 8, 2008
Readers of this review need to ponder the following question: "Who writes a review of a stay at a hotel --three years after the visit?

" This review is from a guest that stayed 3 years ago - March 2005. At that time, we were still recovering from hurricane Iris, which destroyed most of the plants and the trees on the property. We had a substandard manager at that time.

The point is things change in 3 years. We have a new manager, new bar tender, new kitchen staff. Lots of new plants and trees have grown in 3 years. This guest assumes no changes have been made in a 3 year period. I hope that in the past 3 years she has had no changes in her life. So what is the point of the review? You make up your own mind.

This resort and beach houses are exactly as you might picture them on a postcard! Leo R, the manager, did an excellent job to make our three-day stay peaceful and relaxing. Based on other places we stayed in Belize (and they were all nice), this resort offers very nice, clean, comfortable accommodations.
Our beach house was roomy and comfortable - and about 10 meters from the Caribbean Sea! Nothing like listening to the surf as you fall asleep in the sleeping loft of the house! In the mornings the beaches were groomed and neat - ready for us to enjoy another day in the sun.
The reading library is excellent! We might not even need to bring books the next time... there are many dozens of titles and plenty of variety to keep everyone busy.
The kitchen and bar kept us well-fed and happy - no complaints there either! I recommend this resort to anyone - I am sure you will enjoy your stay!
