This was our first visit to Belize and I would say it will not be our last. Our stay at the Green Parrot was a wonderful experience. Accommodations were very clean, comfortable and well kept. Leo and his staff did everything right to make our visit the best. The beach was right outside our door, weather was perfect, food was great. How much better can it get! If you want to really relax on a vacation this is it. Not much night life, but that's exactly what we were looking for. Someplace to get away from cell phones, computors and traffic.

Placencia is growing and many choices are available. We will choose Green Parrot everytime and have done so. This is why... We come down to "get away" and away is how we feel when we wake up in our thatched roof cabana. Our vacationing senses get there fill all day long. We hear the surf outside our window plus a chirp or two from the elusive geckos along with the morning chatter from friend parrots. Our eyes awaken to sights of the beautiful carribean sea from bed. We smell the aromas of native flowers on the property. Our toes feel the soft white sand between them on our morning walk. We taste fresh local fruit in the mornings. We enjoy having many touristic choices planned out for us or... a day in the hammock with rum drinks served to our fingertips. To quickly elaborate, the cabanas at Green Parrot are nicley spaced out for feeling of privacy. They are rustic. Our choice has its shower outside, very private, but how I love to look up into the palm trees and sun by day or the stars at night. The cabanas are clean. (my travel coffee pot was even rinsed out each day) They are spacious and cozy at the same time. The property is beautiful and pristine. There is so much beach front to accomodate all guests so you can be involved with other guests or not. In fact, this past visit we were a part of a 3 year olds birthday party. It was such a blast and so thoughtful of Green Parrot to help create such a B-day memory. They didn't just bake one cake, they baked 2! Yumm. This is the service we know exists everytime we visit. It is friendly and intimate. We feel like their only guest. Obviously not. The meals are delicious so if we choose to stay we are happy or we can walk down the beach for a change in palate. We have borrowed their bikes to peddle to town. We have paddled the carribean in one of their canoes and kayaks. We have taken most of the tours available and all can be arranged by Green Parrot. We have lounged in one of the hammocks and read our day away in shade or sun. If you have read this to the end, you will not regret making this your choice.

My wife and I had the opportunity to spend 7 nights at the Green Parrot during the 1st week in February. We did not know what to expect, but it was our first chance to get away from work in over 3 years. We located the resort on the internet, and it sounded like what we had been looking for. Laid back and restful. So we packed our bags and off we went.

We got picked up at the local airstrip and taken to the resort. The local road could use a little work, but we were taking in the sights and sounds. At first we thought we might have picked the wrong place - out in no-where. But once we turned into the resort, all of our concers were put at reset. The property was very well maintained. The plants were trimmed, the grounds were clean and the sea breeze was just what we needed.

Leo, the manager, greeted us and settled us in the cabana. It was a wooden structure. Plenty of room and a good ocean breeze. All was clean - and the cleaning staff kept the unit in fine shape on a daily basis. We hit the bar and met the local Mayan bar tender, Ruben. Seems like he knows what he is doing and give you a good idea of the activities to keep you busy. He makes a nice drink, and after getting off the plane we tried a couple of his Belize rum "samplers". Nice way to start a vacation.

We tended to get up early and go to bed early. Days seem about 12 hours long. Meals are in the Green Parrot restaurant. There are a couple of places near by, but we never felt the need to leave the facility. Meals changed daily and they were willing to ask us what we wanted - it made for a relaxing experience. They have some great fish meals. Lots of rice and beans that are local to the area.

Tours consisted of Monkey river, Jaguar preserve, I did 2 days of fishing with a guide named Clive. Really seems to know the fishing areas around Placencia. We spent a day in the village. Not a lot to do, but it is worth a trip to see what goes on in the area.

We felt safe and well treated. Since it is a small resort they get to know your name and by the time you leave you feel like a part of the family. If you are looking for a beach vacation and someplace away from the beaten path - this is the place.

It looks to us like the area is changing - more development. My guess is that 5 years from now it will have changed quite a bit - and I am not sure it will be for the better.

When it was time for us to go, we didnt even feel like we had been there a week. Time gets away from you - you have too keep asking what day is it? My wife Carol and I will put this spot on our list of: Must Come back to Locations. Pack light. dont forget the camera - there are a lot of good photo opportunities.
We plan to bring some friends with us on the next visit.

“Paradise in Central America”

We vacationed in Belize to celebrate our 20th anniversary. The Green Parrot website suggested it was a relaxed accommodation for an ecotourism themed vacation away from the hectic commercialized resorts.

We found what what we were looking for in Belize and at the Green Parrot. Our rustic thatched roof cabana, named Parrot-house, was well suited for us. The open interior exposes the cabana's structure of unfinished mahogany wood framing, giving an airy feel suggestive of the "real" Central America. It's worth mentioning that while rustic, these beach houses and cabanas are well built structures that have withstood several hurricanes, including storm "Iris of 2001". Many structures on the Placencia peninsula did not survive storm Iris.

No AC here in the cabana, but the Casablanca fan along with the nightly Caribbean breeze provided all the cooling needed. Sleep came easily, with the quiet interrupted only by the sound of the nearby sea's waves and an occasional chirp from the native "barking" lizards (they're harmless and eat insects). The hammock on the porch was a cool spot to rest in the late afternoon with a cold draft Belikin in hand. Try resting in the hammock after sundown and you soon realize a stargazing paradise. The enclosed outdoor shower (complete with hot water) added to the rustic charm. Don't miss seeing a Caribbean sunrise from your cabana porch.

The staff of the Green Parrot deserves much thanks for their hospitality. Our cabana was cleaned spotless every morning. The beach was raked clean daily and the nicely planted with trees and flora were always being tended to.

Ruben and the rest of the restaurant staff could not have been more accommodating. We didn't have meals included in the reservation, but ended up eating most of them at the Green Parrot, because the food was so good -- the staff couldn't seem to do enough for you. We were NOT in any way pressured by staff to dine at the GP restaurant. An added plus is that Green Parrot unlike most other restaurants, including those in Placencia village, has draft beer.
Ruben does a terrific job at the bar whether drawing Belikin from the tap, or mixing the Green Parrot special, Pina Colada in a freshly opened coconut garnished with fresh fruit and bamboo umbrella - it's a real tropical treat.
In addition to regular Dinner menu which has plenty of variety, there were two different specials every night. Specials were usually dishes of local flavor, e.g., Belizean Stew Pork, grilled fish, coconut rice & shrimp. Note the regular menu includes north American cuisine like burgers and pizza, for the "not so adventurous." Breakfast was no disappointmnet either, freshly grown local fruit available daily, free percolated coffee ..don't miss the banana bread !
We had plenty of fun just talking to our waitresses, Gloria tended to all our dinner needs; while Darena took care of us at breakfast. From reading Plancia Breeze newspaper, we learned Darena was recently selected Garifuna Queen of Belize ( we were being waited on by very modest friendly royalty!!)
Don't miss taking time to talk to Belizeans, we found them to be warm sincere people. We felt safe everywhere in this country.

We did not arrange any tours in advance. Ruben & Leo took care of that after we arrived. We selected from available tours after chatting with other tourists and locals for advice. Though it's a long drive, the tour to Mayan ruins of Xunantunich is recommended. The drive thu central Belize allows you to see beautiful countryside, much of it is unspoiled and sparsely populated. For those like us who want to see wildlife (both flora and fauna) in vast areas of unspoiled habitat, Belize is the place.

The highlight of the entire vacation was Red Bank tour, which is not highly publicized and can be difficult to book unless there is party of 4 or more. Ruben along with our guide to Xunantunich, Zef, were able to accommodate just the two of us. Perhaps they sensed one of our passions, bird-watching. At Red Bank we saw the "holy grail" of bird watching, Scarlet Macaw birds flocking to this mountain in the rain forest to feed on fruit of Pole Wood trees. Since this tour left before sunrise & before the restaurant opened; a most thoughtful Ruben had breakfast boxed up, to go on our early morn tour; we couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. Don't miss Red Bank tour if you get there during the season of the Red Macaw; note it can be a challenging hike up a steep mountain, but well worth it !!

Being eco friendly, the GP is not the place if you're looking for nightclubs, casinos, bright lights or cruise-ship type atmosphere.
The Green Parrot is a small resort, run and managed by warm and caring staff in a location off the more traveled path.
Warning hurry here as it appears modern "development" is on the way!! During daytime we could hear many construction vehicles running on the gravel coastal road. Hopefully some of this paradise, including the Green Parrot and the immediate nearby areas can be spared.

This was our first trip to Belize, and we could not have been more pleased. The travels were easy and the experience was memorable.
Staying at the Green Parrot made the trip all that much more memorable. The staff was warm and friendly. They seem to go our of their way to be of assistance - whether planning a trip or talking about their Mayan culture.
The restaurant is situated right on the water. You get great sea breezes - and wonderful sunrises.
Everything seemed very clean and well cared for. Some evenings we had a problem with the sand flies, but that seems to be a problem with many areas along the ocean. I guess that is the tropics.
Snorkeling, biking, kayaks, and Jaguar Preserve--all were just grand. I must say i spent many an afternoon in the hammock reading a book from the small library at the Green Parrot.
The best I can say is that we intend to come back. This would be a great spot for brining all or part of a family for a winter vacation.
Also, we flew on the local airline. I am not fond of small planes -but it is a grand way to see the land and water.
All came to an end too soon - but we shall return!
