“Luxury and Adventure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

Robert’s Grove Beach Resort provides the perfect combination of luxury and adventure. Our accommodations were immaculate, comfortable and spacious. The staff couldn’t have been more friendly. The food was delicious. The atmosphere around the pool, restaurant and beach was quiet and relaxed. Our cave and ruins adventure with Rafeal was both educational and exciting and a huge hit with the kids (11-18 years old). Finally, it was within walking distance of the harbor where we started our sailing excursion after a few days at the resort. I would definitely return here on our next trip to Belize.

Room Tip: It's worth it to have a view room...even if you don't spend much time in the room. We enjoy...

5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 22, 2013

We just returned from a lovely 6-night stay in a 2 BR villa and thoroughly enjoyed the trip. It is important to remember that Placencia isn't Maui or Miami. A 5-star here isn't the same, and the bar isn't set in the same place. If you are looking for a Maui 5-star, look elsewhere - probably outside of Belize. For Belize, this place is great. The staff was always friendly, the place was continually being cleaned and picked up. Beach was as clean as a Placencia beach can be, but don't kid yourself, it isn't a swimming beach and no one really uses it even to lie on. The pools, and lounge chairs just above the beach provide ample, sunny and shady, comfortable seating. The pools were cleaned regularly and ample for the size of the resort. There was a consistent breeze while we were there which helped to keep the temperature down and limited the sandflies (we didn't see any, but they must be there!). It was much hotter, just a bit away from the ocean so I would recommend requesting an ocean front room if you hope to sit outside your room or keep your windows open for a breeze. Beds were comfortable, A/C worked well. We had HOT water most of the time and occasionally lukewarm water which for this part of the world we think is 5-star! It was hazy most mornings and evenings so we didn’t get any spectacular sunrises or sunsets, but I can see that they would be spectacular with clear skies.
Room tips - not all ocean front villa rooms are the same. Some have the "master bedroom" on the oceanfront, and some have it on the side of the unit. Depending on what you're looking for you might want to be specific.
Tours/Activities - We took two tours from RG. Silk Caye - Initially we were turned off by the size of the group (2 boats worth, maybe 20 people) and the crowd on the tiny island, but it turned out to be just fine. The guides were flexible once they understood our level of ability and let us pretty much do our own thing. The stop with the loggerhead turtles and rays was a hoot and we wished we could have stayed longer. A suggestion for the tours would be to divide the snorkeling groups, and boats, into those with more/less experience so the more timid snorkelers aren't left waiting around for those who could snorkel all day :) Our second trip was to Laughing Bird Caye. The Caye is beautiful, and worth the trip. We were disappointed because we had already done this trip through Sea Horse dive shop in the village and had been told that RG was going to Pompion Caye. It was only after we left the dock that we were told of the revised destination due to rough waters. And the water was rough! One woman on our boat hurt her back and I think it was irresponsible of RG to take people out without at least making sure we knew what we were getting into. My husband dove that day and I snorkeled. The other two members of our group were less interested in snorkeling in rough water at a site they had already snorkeled at (and paid to see). Upon return we were able to negotiate to have their fees waived, as we would not have chosen to return to Laughing Bird had we been given a choice. It took asking for the waiver twice in order to get it, but we did get it without complaint. My husband enjoyed the diving, but did note that while RG inquired how recently he dove, they never asked to see his certification or about his experience. He was glad he had enough experience to basically be on his own as that was about how much attention they paid to him. We used the sailboats and kayaks with easy access and just the right amount of staff attention.
Restaurants - The continental breakfast is only enough if you like pastries, fruit and sweetened yogurt. Otherwise plan to supplement from the menu for eggs, etc. We got bored of it and explored other options. The omelets at the bakery on the marina side were okay. The best breakfast, by far, was at the resort next door, Laru Beya. Their restaurant, The Quarterdeck, was reasonably priced and excellent food for breakfast and dinner. Highly recommended. Okay, back to Robert's Grove - the Mexican restaurant, Habanero, was good, we ate there twice. Fajitas were more than ample and yummy. No good margaritas to be found though. The main restaurant, Seaside, was okay. With vegetarians in our family we found their menu wanting, but then again, so is most of Belize. We used this restaurant mostly for snacks, appetizers and drinks. The one we were most disappointed in was Sweet Mama's. Having been told it was Belizean Style we really looked forward to it, but in fact the menu was very limited (hamburger, hotdog, fish burger, fried chicken and French fries). When I asked about vegetarian options they mentioned rice and beans, but that isn't on their menu. We didn't eat there, but instead went into town.
Village restaurants- We went to Omar's for real Belizean food. Excellent, affordable and recommended. No alcohol there, but no worries, we went next door to the bar to buy drinks and just walked them back to Omar's. We also ate at the Purple Space Monkey - adequate, but lacking in atmosphere. (We were fond of the original one from 10 years ago). We enjoyed Rumfish for our final dinner in town and would recommend it.
Final note, transportation to the village by taxi was easy and affordable. We had been told it was $10 US per person to take a taxi, but that wasn’t the case at all. We paid somewhere between $10-15 US for 4 people. All of the taxi drivers provide cards so you can call them again, which is easily done from the room phones. We enjoyed getting to know a few of them well and used the car rides to learn more about Placencia locals and their experience. Really nice people, all of them.

Room Tip: In hotter months the ocean front rooms really do make a difference due to the breeze, but that is on...

We shifted from four nights in the jungle, staying in rustic accommodations, to arriving at Robert's Grove which felt like we had landed in the lap of luxury. We had a two bedroom suite which was beautiful and had a pool right out our front door. From there we could walk down to the beach and use the catamarans and kayaks. We only ate in the formal dining room in the mornings for the continental breakfast, the food was simple (fruit & pastries) and service there was great. Our first night we ate at their mexican restaurant across the way, expensive and cheesy, that one I would skip. Other times we ate at Sweet Mamas, great food and reasonably priced. Our boys cracked open coconuts, swam in the ocean, and played coconut football in the pool. Easy access to the town of Placencia - go to Tutti Frutti's for gelato!

What a great place! We were there for a destination wedding-and it was set up perfectly. This included a formal meal out on the pier the night before. The food was great and the physical layout was beautiful. But what really made it wonderful were the people. They were always pleasant, they never felt put out and they remembered who we all were. We hope to return soon.

Our room was nice - large, clean and a huge deck with chairs and a hammock. However, we didn't want to hang out in our room, and that's where the resort really drops off. The staff is so incredibly slow I think they must be paid based on the length they make you wait - to order, to bring you drinks, to refill the drinks (if at all), to bring the food, to bring the check, etc. The grounds are beautiful - two pools and an amazing beachfront with sand - but no fish to snorkel out to see, the tiki bar was NEVER open during our three days there, the tours were on average 20% higher than what you'd get in Placencia (we paid $75/pp for snorkeling with Sea Horse Dive Shop - they wanted $90/pp and weren't going out as far on the reef), and you are pretty far from town and need to take a cab at night because the bikes have to be back at the resort by 5 p.m. The free sailboats/kayaks/paddle boats are great, but you should pre-reserve the golf cart (if you can) or else you'll pay $75 US for a 8 hour rental. If you eat on property, go across to the Mexican restaurant at the lagoon or eat off of the bar menu - the restaurant was expensive, food was poor and again, service is terrible! Next time, I think we'll go to a different resort in Placencia - or try Caye Caulker so we can snorkel right off the shoreline.

It´s a very nice place, well-mantain. The food is very good there....but the hotel has a poor service and the rates are expensive for what you get. We arrived via Boat and nobody helped us to take our luggage to the hotel (2 minutes walking distance)

Robert's Grove is beautiful. The property is well-maintain (beaches raked daily, clean pools). We spent our time between the three pools, the beach and on the water. The kayaks and sailboats were a lot of fun. Our room was great, with a breathtaking view (palms, pools, ocean). Complimentary bikes were also available for an easy ride into Placencia.

Breakfast was good each morning, with fresh fruits and baked goods. We were traveling with a toddler, so the 7am breakfast start time was a little late (a problem most vacationers won't have). Likewise, the 6pm dinner start time was a little late. Habaneros was really tasty. Sweet Mamas was ok - the prices were good, but the food was lacking.

Staff and service was great. Everyone was very friendly and helpful. We arrived early the first day and early pick-up and check-in weren't issues. The staff at the front desk even verified our departing flight reservations and scheduled our shuttle to the airport.
