“We relaxed at SAKS”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2006

We stayed at SAKS at Placencia for 10 days in January looking for a private retreat for our 25th wedding anniversary. We couldn't have had a more enjojable and relaxing vacation. In reply to the posted comments that the owners are distant...I saw that as one of their strengths. They work very hard behind the scenes to ensure that you have a private but complete vacation. The last thing I wanted was intrusions and they were always accessible, accommodating, and friendly.

The place is spotless and beautifully maintained. Our beachfront cabana with only a short walk down a beatiful sandy trail to an excellent restaurant (some nights it felt like it was just ours) and a beachront bar with new friends was our dream vacation.

The staff are relaxed (as are most of the residents in Placencia) and truly interested in seeing that you have everything you need and enjoy yourselves. We went on several trips that were booked through the resort and Sandra went out of her way to ask on our return thru the office that all went well and whether we had suggestions. We were extremely pleased with the guides and the trips we took, including a visit to the mountains with tour through a ruins, snorkling, Monkey River excursion, and fishing along the reefs.

If you want to be pampered and waited over go elsewhere. If you want privacy with first rate accommodations and great staff go to SAKS. The new owners are clealy continuing the type of resort that Miss Kitty created and I'm sure they'll improve on what is already an outstanding resort as they get familiar with their new retirement careers.

We stayed at this resort for 7 nights in January and loved it. The staff were extremely friendly and made us feel very welcome and "at home",
Because the place is small and intimate it felt like our own private hide-away. The beach was never crowded, sometimes we were the only ones on the beach and there were lots of loungers and hammocks to choose from.
The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. While at the resort we never wore shoes as the pathways are all sand - that's how casual this place is.
We ate in the restaurant every night because the food was very good. The menu changed each night which was a really nice idea. The food was fresh and tasty and the shrimp was to die for.Breakfast and lunch was also different every day. If you want coffee, on the beach in the morning, ask the kitchen staff to set up a tray for you, they will do it gladly. I am sure you could have breakfast at the beach if you asked ( I never thought to do it) the staff are so accommodating.
One night they had a bar b que at the beachfront bar. It was fabulous. The staff fussed for the whole day getting it ready and they even closed the restaurant for the evening so that the staff could serve us. An evening we'll never forget. I hope they keep doing the bar b que thing as it was alot of fun. The beachfront bar became our "local" and we made some wonderful friends there, both fleeting and longlasting.
We booked two trips through the resort and both were good value and very enjoyable.
Saks was a place that stole a piece of our hearts.

Ate at Saks quite often during my time In Placencia. The food was quite good and very well prices. the service friendly. We also got to know the new owners (from Calgary) and they are extremely friendly and attentive. They just purchased the resort and I think that they are molding it into what they want it to be. The beach and grounds are excellent.

After spending a long holiday in Plancencia I have to say that Kitty really did a great job with taking care of the grounds. They are the best in Placencia and they're beautiful! (Turtle Inn is over the top, too perfect.)

However, I was not happy with the quality of service at SAKS. Especially for the $200 + /night we were spending for our cabana. The new owners actually left for the states during this "high season" and it left us wondering who in the heck was in charge?

For example, the wonderful dinner menus that were planned in advance and given to us when we checked in were not even close to what was served each night. Kinda felt like the old "bait and switch" thing going on for those families that bought meals as part of their package. Go to town for some great authentic meals! (Try Wendy's, Yoli's, The Purple Space Monkey, and Da Tatch) Oh yeah... the lunch time menu at SAKS had little available... no fries, out of soft drinks, etc. Go to town for lunch too! And the beach bar? Well, just make sure you're not staying next to it on a night they offer Karaokee.

Our cabanas... well they had a kitchenette, but there were no plates, bowls, utensils, or even a coffee pot. We had to request one, as well as the coffee grounds too. However the cabanas were spotless!!! Great cleaning service!!!!

And then there's the phone call I placed from town to the front desk requesting they let my parents know where to meet us for lunch. After becoming worried about them 3 hours later, I walked back to SAKS (40 minute walk) and was told by the gentleman playing on the computer that he didn't have any time to deliver the message.

I won't tell you about the newlyweds I met there who's luggage was sent out to the overnight camping island instead of their cabana. They were actually asked if they really needed it or could wait for it to return the next day!

If you have a sense of humor and don't mind poor service for top dollar prices, then SAKS is a must!

I'll be returning once I lower my expectations or they lower their prices.

yes, saks has a great location, a great beach and very nice cabanas. However the staff at the front desk are appauling - they dont know what is going on! We were never told when we checked in that we would be moved to another room the next night, we were told the restaurant was open when it was not,and they knew little or nothing about the tours provided etc.

Front desk staff at Saks need to be trained and aware of what the resort can and cannot provide. I know that in Belize one has to expect less than the US level of customer service but Saks is not a cheap resort by any means and competent staff should be part of the experience.

I get the sense that the new owners are still learning and that in general this resort was a better bet under its previous management, when it was known as "Kitty's Place."

My stay at Saks was amazing. It was formerly known as Kitty's Place, and has recently been renovated by a very nice family. It was absolutely beautiful, relaxing, and accommodating to all of our needs. The resort was very clean, not too buggy, and very peaceful. Not to mention, reasonably priced. I also recommend if you stay at Saks or anywhere in Placencia, that you make a visit to Sugar Reef restaurant. An amazing couple own it, and the food is wonderful.

My husband & I stayed at SAKS for 7 nights. The resort is small and layed back, owned by a Canadian couple who are quite carefree and I can not emphasize that enough!! (I do not necessarily mean in a good way) it was nice that they are friendly and leave you alone-but I am not sure they have been off the resort too much...hard to get any info or a straight answer some times. The resort is quiet in the evening but not during the day...they are building a house on the property and there is construction noise in the front left side of the resort...not that bad for us but could be for someone. The restaurant is decent, moderately priced. The landscape and beach is beautiful...a lot of hammocks and chairs for lounging-water shallow lots of seagrass and not good snorkeling from shore. You can rent kayaks from places near town and head to the point at the end of town for better snorkeling if you do not want to go by boat. We were aware of most of these things before arriving so there were not too many surprises. What became frustrating for us was setting up tours for snorkeling/diving and a day trip to Xuanantunich ruins...there was a new person at the desk every day and although we filled out all the forms we had to explain ourselves and what we wanted to do every day. The staff at the desk is friendly but not well organized.
My tip: book all your trips in town
(they will tell you at the resort you need a minimum amount of people to go/which is more true for boating but not for inland tours-Nite Wind will take a couple-you pay park fees and lunch yourself,it comes out to the same price)
My recommendation: South Belize for snorkel/diving
Nite wind tours for inland trips
You may rent bicycles to go into the village or take taxi.

Restaurant recommendations: Merlene's, Purple Space Monkey and De'Thatch
