After a long and tiring journey, we finally arrived in Placencia. We hopped in a cab from Placencia aiport and in about 15 minutes we arrived at the most beautiful entrance to Joyce and Franks Bed & Breakfast. The sea breeze was refreshing and the grounds were lush with vibrant green palm trees and beautiful tropical flowers. We were greeted by Joyce and her friendly smile. Virgilio, the caretaker/grounds keeper/tour guide and general good man, was always available and made sure that we didn't lift a finger as he guided us to our cottage. Our little coral house with its white picket fence and screened in portch was perfect! It was a cozy, romantic little piece of heaven. Maybe our little cabin wouldn't be for everyone but my husband and I couldn't have been happier sharing our studio bedroom and did I mention the screened in porch? The view was picturesque; something you see in travel magazines. With the door to the cottage open and past the swaying palm tree was the calm, crystal blue ocean. This was our home for our week in Placencia. The services were excellent! Josephine and Virgilio worked very hard to make sure we were comfortable. The blinds in the bathroom were stuck and would not shut. We decided not to complain but after we returned from our excursion, they were fixed! That's service! The pool was magical. It was a fantastic place to cool off from the tropical heat. The waterfall was relaxing and provided a great sound effect. Fishing from their private pier every day was always fun and interesting being that you never knew what you were going to catch...huge barracuda, snappers, jacks. The "old dock" across the street behind the hotel didn't disappointe either. The kayaks were especially fun! Virgilio helpped us get them to the mangroves which leads to the lagoon. Where the water was like an aquarium and many interesting creatures walked the shore line, we saw a coatimundi climbing the tree and a giant iguana! The birds were inumerable. Every morning we would enjoy Josephine's belizean breakfast but there were other tasty items you could choose from on the menu. I especially loved the cinammon fry jacks! Oh the fry jacks! Think hollow zepole. If you're feeling lazy, Josephine will also make you lunch. We had excellent chicken burritos! Eating in Placencia is an adventure in itself. Right next door to Joyce and Franks was Mango's, a great place to hang out and get the most awesome fried chicken and you must have the conch fritters (in season). A short walk down the road is Maya Bistro, a must! Two words...gourmet cuisine! Oscar makes this incredible cocktail, the muddled mind. This place could be dropped right in the middle of NYC and it would be a rave! The owners/Chef were warm and inviting. The Chef stopped by our table to make sure we were enjoying ourselves and when we visited the restaurant for the second time, we were remembered! Visits to Placencia town were an adventure and always a highlight of our trip. The cab drivers were friendly and knowledgeable; always providing good tips on restaurants and great places to get a drink. Make sure you visit Yoli's On Da Water! DON'T BE AFRAID! Just be real and casual and the pirates will be your friend. Barefoot bar is a must! The drink menu/book is extensive! The Secret Garden is a delicious haven in the middle of a lush garden. The romantic ambiance and lighting make it a perfect place for date night. Rumfish was special, with the most incredible ceviche and mango fizz cocktail I have ever tasted!
If you plan on going fishing or touring Monkey River, ask Joyce for Alrin. He was a great captain who put us on two awesome days of tarpon fishing and when the wind went bad, he took us on a personal tour of his home on the Monkey River. Having him fly down the river at top speed made us feel like we were in a scene from Apocalypse Now. AWESOME!
We attempted to snorkel with the whale sharks but they weren't on our schedule! The water was very rough and some even got sea sick so take your dramamine. The guides were very sympathetic though and took those who did not want to take the second snorkel trip after lunch, to calmer waters where we spent the rest of the day snorkeling on a pristine reef. Those who did snorkel for the second half of the day left with the divers on the larger boat. If you plan on booking excursions, schedule in advance, especially the fishing. Joyce was very helpful in making sure we got what we wanted!
We would recommend Joyce and Franks to anyone looking for a casual getaway!!
