I can't give this B&B five stars because, in my book, that would indicate that everything was absolutely perfect. While our stay wasn't "perfect," it was absolutely wonderful. Joyce & Frank's B&B is located on the beautiful stretch of Maya Beach in Placencia, Belize. The grounds are extremely well kept, the pool is amazing, the views are spectacular, the private pier with lounge chairs and hammocks is a perfect, romantic little hideaway, and the B&B is walking distance from some of the best food around.
From our first phone call inquiring about staying at Joyce & Frank's, Joyce was extremely helpful and informative. She was courteous and eager to answer any questions we had, even via email after we booked our stay. We stayed in B-2 and, for less than $100 per night, we felt that we got quite a bargain. The room was very small but comfortable, and, yes, the bed was high off the ground, but given the location of the safe (excellent feature), the height was required. In response to one of the reviews around the same time as our stay, we experienced absolutely no sewage smell. The screened-in porch is a perfect way to spend an evening sipping a Belikin beer (provided at the B&B for $1.50US) and watching the sun pass over the peninsula.
The bathroom is small (3/4 bath), but it was everything we needed. Our room was cleaned daily, and was equipped with a mini fridge, microwave, tv with cable, wireless internet, coffee maker, etc. While no shampoos or soaps were provided, it didn't make one bit of difference in my mind - we always pack travel sizes of those items in our carry-on.
Josephine, the housekeeper and cook is incredible! Everything was prepared to order (including the delicious flour tortillas for her burritos and quesadillas). Josephine was the first person we met at the property, and she greeted us with a wonderfully friendly attitude and was extremely helpful and accommodating throughout our stay.
Virgilio, the groundskeeper/maintenance was also very helpful. Being a native, he was able to give us tips on where to go and how to get there, without busting the budget. He was more than accommodating throughout our stay, and made everything extremely easy - including our transportation to and from the airport and many of our tours.
Booking tours through Joyce did seem to be required, but it did make sense because the rates were slightly lower than had we booked something separately. I'm sure there is a commission paid to any booking agency, but, quite honestly, that's business, right, and, in all seriousness, Joyce took wonderful care of us with every tour we booked - it was so easy!
There were kayaks, paddle boats, and snorkel gear available 24/7 at no charge for guests, which was an awesome added feature - we have stayed at several places that require you to rent this gear by the hour. I was very pleased that we did not have to pay to use the equipment.
The Volkswagen available to rent at the B&B is expensive and, unless you have difficulty walking short distances, not totally necessary. While the rental is expensive, it is not out of line based on how much it would be to rent a car anywhere in Belize - the only difference is you can't take the Volkswagen off the peninsula - slight drawback if you want to explore the country. Nevertheless, this is such a minor issue. If you want to get in to Placencia Village, renting the Volkswagen for 1/2 day, taking a taxi, or taking the local bus are your best options. We chose to take the bus every time ($1US per person each way), which was a bargain.
Overall, we would absolutely stay at Joyce & Frank's again! Relaxing by the pool, walking on the beautiful, white sand beach, riding bikes (provided at no charge) up and down the peninsula, eating delicious food, and getting some great rest is all anyone could ask for in a vacation, and we got just that!
B-2 is great - it's quiet and very relaxing. It is not right on the beach, but it is less than...
