“Absolutely Awesome!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 4, 2011

We stayed in the Beach House and it was our home away from home, more luxurious than ever anticipated in a third world country. This is our second visit but this time we brought the family. My wife and I had rejuvenating escape from the pressures of the modern world as we stepped back to the relaxed pace of Belizean life. Joyce and Frank were extremely knowledgeable, active and gracious. With mountain water piped in there was never a problem with the drinking water. The courtyard and the little nature path behind the Beach House was a nice added touch. The well maintained pool and beach with the palapas were great. As dog lovers, we enjoyed Tiff, the prized miniature Bichon with all her character. Josephine (the cook and maid) went to required classes in Belize and is certified in Belize for food handling and room care and did a fabulous job. We encouraged her to create a Belizean Cookbook as her recipes were time consuming and original. We appreciate the beds being a little high off the ground (like they do in the Bahamas) as it gave us room for all our dive gear and empty luggage without having to trip over it. The cute hand crafted stools for anyone who needed an extra boost to get in bed were thoughtful be we didn’t need them. There was even a safe in the room! Virgilio, the fix it all man, was at a moments notice, always willing to help with the kayaks, fishing or whatever needed attention. The value for the money for what this place offer is excellent as Joyce and Frank’s prices are incredibility reasonable compared other hotels in the same area. And Joyce and Frank’s offer much more extras. (our favorites were the free kayaks, wifi, bikes and pier; Frank even let me use his fishing pole and my wife loved the fresh flowers everyday) From the beach house living room you can see the dining area, pool and ocean are is just a hop, skip and a jump away while the beach house offers added privacy and gave us a exclusive little world of our own. We can’t wait to return next year!

My sister & husband stayed with us in the beach cottage (with no view). kitchen not supplied with essential cooking utensils, light bulbs out or didn't work, no garbage sacks, or dish soap. Most important (we all got sick) weren't told to not drink the water or was there bottled water in our rooms to even give a hint of this situation. Spent 3 days going back and forth to the local clinic. Beds are about 2 ft off the floor so you need a stool to get in and out. Tthere are no bed pads under the sheets. The closet in our room wasn't attached to the wall and fell on top of me the 1st day we arrived. Joyce bathes her pet in the swimming pool in her clothes. Getting information from our hostess was a complete crap soot. The answer to any question will be different each time, this included the quote for one week stay and excursions. It was bazaar! The sanitary conditions that breakfast is cooked in is 3rd world. Lounge chairs are solid wood with 1" cushions. You can recline in these for 10 minutes at the longest. Met other guests and the complaints go on & on so it just wasn't our situation. Don't go there it was horrible!

We went there planning to stay for a few days but we were so impressed that we stayed for 2 weeks. The location was great, we could walk to nearby restaurants, a bowling alley, etc. we had bikes and Kayaks to use and we were treated great by everyone there.
We would definately return.

The accomodations aren't bad, but the "beach house" sits behind the main building with no view. I specifically asked if the beach house was on the beach and was told that the whole property was "on the beach". I felt very misled! I've attached a picture of the view from the "beach house." The beds in the beach house also sit about 3ft. off the floor - much higher than most beds, and the mattresses were not comfortable. They were difficult for my parents to get in and out of bed. The bedframe actually looked like treated 4x4s with a sheet of plywood on it to hold the mattress. A pretty headboard was attached. I wouldn't spend the extra money on the beach house! The pool is the nicest part of the small resort.

We went to Belize to do some diving, eat some good food and enjoy the beach. Joyce and Franks is located in Maya Beach which is about the perfect distance from Placencia for us. It is easy to go to Placencia if you want more touristy attractions, but also easy to get back to the very relaxed attitude and beautiful beach area that is Maya Beach. This is not a high end resort, but had everything we wanted: beautiful beach, lots of great outdoor reading places, bikes and kayaks available and a beautiful pool, The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Having breakfast prepared for us each morning was great. The food at restaurants within easy walking distance was wonderful! We would definitely go back to Joyce and Frank's!

In Maya Beach, half way down on the Placencia Peninsula, we stayed at Joyce and Franks (http://www.belizebandb.com/). The web site accurately describes the B & B. We enjoyed excellent breakfasts cooked by a talented Garafuna woman. She also cleaned rooms and did laundry ($5 per load with rapid service). We enjoyed talking with her! Likewise, the man who did maintenance and took us snorkeling in kayaks couldn’t have been nicer. He was of Mayan ancestry and was extremely responsive to our requests. He was also in charge of the bicycles which we used to ride up and down the peninsula. Our hosts, Joyce and Frank, were accommodating and quite helpful. I gashed my leg when a rock fell on me while we were hiking in the Cockscomb (Jaguar) Preserve. When we returned to the hotel, we decided that I should get it looked at by a doctor. Our hosts made phone calls and I got stitched up in Placencia by a very friendly and competent doctor. As an aside, in about 2 weeks, the wound had healed.

What rating would I give to Joyce and Franks B& B? Extremely positive! The sleeping area in the cabana was a bit small but we had a porch on which we could sit and watch the ocean. The bathroom area was fairly large and there was a pass through that served as a storage place for our stuff. The hot water pressure in the shower was anemic and the waste treatment could not handle toilet paper so you had to put it in a receptacle at the side of the toilet. If you have traveled to this area of the world, you realize that this is not an uncommon situation. We never used the air conditioner since we loved listening to the ocean and one night to the rain.

The place was clean, the facilities were well maintained, the swimming pool was cool but very clean, we had water baths to wash sand from our feet before entering the cabana, there was a hose to wash off salt water after coming from swimming, breakfasts were casual, well prepared and ample, our hosts and staff were accommodating and we really enjoyed the other couples who were at the B & B. There are many eating places within walking distance or within easy driving distance. We enjoyed eating at a lot of them including one in an art gallery across the road. All in all, a big thumbs up to Joyce, Frank, Vergilio and Josephine for making this a great start to our stay in Belize.

This is a letter I sent to the owner which sums up our stay...
Hi Joyce,
I'm sorry it has taken so long to write. The holidays have kept us busy. I
just wanted to thank you for the absolutely perfect 10th anniversary. We are
anxious to come back again and again. Belize was more incredible than we
could have imagined and your bed and breakfast was beautiful, comfortable,
and welcoming. You truly have a little piece of paradise there.
We can't say enough about Virgilio. He was honestly our fondest memory of
the entire trip. He went out of his way to help make us feel right at home.
His work ethic was just amazing. His friendly and sincere personality made
us want to bring him home with us! He was up raking the beach at dawn, took
us to the reef in the mornings, had the bicycles ready for us in the
afternoons, took us to the lagoon side and shared his local knowledge and
stories. He even barbequed for us with chicken he bought and handmade flour
tortillas he ordered. It was such a generous gesture and amazing meal. He
gives your bed and breakfast a real hospitality I don't think we would have
found anywhere else. You've got a real gem of a groundskeeper in Virgilio.
You just don't come across people as honest and hardworking like that these
days. He represents you and Belize beautifully.
Thank you so much for all of the amenities you offer at no additional
charge. Your pool was luxurious and we really appreciated the use of the
kayak and bicycles. The cable and air conditioning were such an added bonus.
Josephine's breakfasts were delicious and she was also hospitable and
hardworking. I enjoyed conversations with her and she was sincere, kind, and
honest.
We intend to return to Belize as often as we can. We wouldn't dream of
staying anywhere other than your bed and breakfast. Cheers to you and your
hardworking staff.

Thank you so much and Happy Holidays,
Jaime
