A slightly belated review from 'across the pond', as most of the clientele - and hence reviewers - are from the US.

We were put off somewhat by the inconsistency of previous reviews, especially some quite critical comments on the food, but because it otherwise suited our requirements we took a chance - and are delighted we did.

We stayed for a full week on an excursion-inclusive package which worked well, albeit that one or two of the trips we would have liked to have done were cancelled because of lack of numbers.

The food in our view was excellent with lots of choice and fresh fish each day. It is definitely a bit laid back and I can imagine that US visitors may feel deprived of their usual fare and snappy service, but us Brits certainly felt at home and well looked after. 'Relaxed' is the word I would use to describe most things, although as always some guests will hit it off better with some members of staff than others accordingly to their own personality and mood.

We had a lovely cabana (see photos) close to the dining room which was very quiet and convenient, although we were thoroughly confused by the descriptions on the hotel website as to what accommodation was on offer and the bed configurations and sizes therein. This may of course have been improved in the meantime but I've not checked to see (although I doubt it!).

On our package the bumph said that non-alcholic drinks were included, so the only slight niggle we had was when we came to check-out and they expected us to pay for sodas (albeit they'd only logged about 20% of our consumption - so the barman was presumably under the same impression that we were!). To be fair they waived the charge, although I gave up trying to convince the girl on the desk that it wasn't really a 'concession' if it was they who'd erred....!

All in all a great holiday destination - go there and enjoy the snorkelling (but protect your back from the sun with a T-shirt or better wear a wetsuit top - even though it might be an amazing 80F the water still feels cold!)

“Most Wonderful Honeymoon Experience!”

Jaguar Reef Lodge

Jun 13, 2008

My husband and I stayed at the Jaguar Reef Lodge in January 2007 for our Honeymoon. We reserved the romantic package. It was well worth every cent! The excursions were wonderful and the guides friendly and informative! When we went snorkeling the guides educated us on the marine life.

I am a super picky eater, and they catered to my strange eating habits. One night we got to eat on the beach under the millions of stars.

Off the peer there was a manatee. Unfortunately, my husband and I are not the best at kayaking, and we were not swift enough to get close to the creature. It was nice that the resort had kayaks for us to use free of charge though! Off the peer in the evening we watched crabs and fish swim by.

The beach was clean and safe. Our cabana was right on the beach, and we slept every night with the windows open.
There was even a friendly cat which greeted us every morning.

Just be careful of the bot flies!!

My husband and I just returned from our honeymoon at Jaguar Reef Lodge. We booked the romantic honeymoon package. The overall feel of the hotel was comfortable and relaxing and everything was clean (especially the beach). Our guides were great and the adventure trips were fun. However, we felt a few things might have been improved upon. The meal service was below average. Servers often ignored you (and you have to sign a tab after every meal and drink orders) and half the time we had to track them down to sign. At first we thought, maybe it's us, but we talked to other couples and they were receiving the same treatment (we would even leave tips and the service never changed). I'm assuming the staff has changed since some of the other reviews. We also discovered the occurrance of power outages...when the power goes, so does the water (it's pumped in). There was a backup generator, but it was also broken so you had to wait until the power came back on it's own. Almond beach next door always had a working generator, so stay there if you can. My inlaws sent us a fruit basket and a bottle of champagne through the hotel, but we never received the champagne and they got charged. These are just the little nuances we experienced =).

My wife and I just returned from an eight day trip to Jaguar Reef, which also included a wedding. We have both worked in the resort industry for many years and are both very critical of service. By the end of our trip we really had a hard time finding any fault in the resort. It was everything we wanted it to be and more. I would highly recommend this place.

“Food poisening sickness”

Our family of four stayed at this resort the first day the snorkel on the barrier reef was beautiful. That night my husband fell il with food poisening with all of our food and drink provided soley by the Jaguar reef the sorce was pretty clear. The second full day my husbsnd still had the effectsof the food poisening from the jaguar reef . We tried to make the mayan tour he laid in the grass all day feeling horrible with violent GI disturbances, even the security guards felt bad for him, the coach we rode in was dirty ,had water damage stains on the ceiling and the worst of all it had a broken airconditioning system and with the heat and humidity it was awful. The next night I got food poisening and had the violent GI disturbances. With both adults sick we had to leave early I thought we would be able to neogciate with the owner for a return trip but he was unreasonable and kept denying the food poisening charges and wanted to keep our previous trip money . Saying he would keep it as a credit for a future trip. that Jaguar reef doesn't give refunds. When we got back to the states the food poisening was confirmed by our phycian. I feel that the jagur reef didn't stand behind what they provide once you have paid them you dont get your money back if thereis a problem.I feel like I didn't do anything wrong to have our trip taken away, just because I ate the food they provided. The owner Bruce Forester stated they don;t refund money at all just hold onto your money for a future trip you may not be ble to do.I am seeking other avenues for a refund of our money for a trip with activitites we didn't get to do. I feel the owner doesn't care about it once he has your money. It has been alot of extra work to try to recover money for just attending the Jaguar reef and eating the food they provided. Connie in Colorado Thank goodness the children didn't get sick.

Management Response

I felt compelled to write a response to this review because I belive that it does not accurately represent the quality of our food, the flexibility and compassion that we for our guests and reflects poorly on me personally.

The guests claim that they became ill as a result of food poisoning in highly questionable for the simple reason that over 30 other guests had the exact same meal that evening yet not a single one experienced the slightest symptoms of food poisoning. I, in fact was at the resort that evening and had the very same meal yet was totally fine. If the food was somehow tainted all who consumed it would have become ill, not just one or two people.

Upon hearing about their illness we did a thorough evaluation of the kitchen which confirmed that there were no potential sources of food poisoning anywhere within our operation. Our chefs and kitchen staff are all thoroughly trained in food preparion and storage which is likely why we have been fortunate never to have experienced a single case of food poisoning despite being in business for 15 years and serving thousands of guests during this time.

We offerred to provide a nurse to attend to these guests but the guests declined our offer of medical attention. Although the guest's symptoms were likely a result of heat exhaustion and not food poisoning we offered them a complimentary return visit which is what they were demanding. We were not, however willing to cover the cost of their international airfare. They did receive a full refund from their travel insurance company and yet still insisted on us providing them a free vacation, including airfare which we had no choice but to deny.

One has to wonder why they would want to return to the resort so badly when they're experience there was much less than perfect.

I want to assure all future guests that we at Jaguar Reef Lodge take issues like food safety very seriously and assure you that you can feel confident that any food you consume while at our premises is 100% safe to eat.
