Thatch Caye is a completely unique resort experience. Yes, it's a private island resort with unparalleled outdoor activities and understated luxury, but staying there feels more like visiting the private summer estate of an extremely interesting and hospitable friend (the owner, Steve, keeps a casita on the the island and joined us for cocktails every night and a snorkel trip for his own enjoyment). My wife and 10-year old daughter and I travel a fair amount together and rarely repeat stays. This is our second visit to Thatch Caye, though, and will likely become an annual vacation. Since the island only holds about 20+ guests, we frequently had entire mornings or afternoons completely to ourselves at the new "Star Fish Bar" salt water swimming area. One example of staff attentiveness: someone must have noticed my daughter scrambling to get out of the water onto the swimming area dock. The next morning, an underwater ladder to the dock had been installed, without asking. Kids are clearly welcome, but they should plan on leaving cell phones behind. They have also installed a new large screen theater since last year for outdoor movie night DVD's. My family travels to escape. If you're looking to replace air conditioning with cool sea breezes, shopping with swimming, restaurants with well-prepared meals, and internet time with reading or snorkling--you'll love Thatch Caye as much as we do. Thatch Caye is also perfect for a romantic couples getaway--I wish I would have known about it for our honeymoon. What not to bring: too many clothes or electronic devices. What to bring: extra waterproof sunscreen, insect repellent, and must-have snacks. Great value for cost!

Thatch Caye is a gem of a spot 9 miles off the southern coast of Belize--a short boat ride from the town of Dangriga. Our group of 9 yoga enthusiasts were treated like royalty. The owners and staff offe a warm and professional hospitality. The food is delicious and plentiful. Although not a luxury resort, Thatch Caye has clean, comfortable, eco-friendly traditional "casitas" and "cabanas" with the all basic amenities. From our terrace we had a a great sea view, with hammocks and chairs for relaxing, reading or taking in the breeze. The resort offers a variety of water activities: kayaking, diving, fishing etc. Snorkeling trips along the spectacular coral reef were my favorite, along with a visit to a nearby bird sanctuary. For a beautiful, safe, family vacation, yoga retreat or couple's getaway, Thatch Caye has it all. One of my best trips to the Caribbean. Can't wait to return.

Just got back from 4 nights at Thatch Caye with my wife. Since TC is a very small island a 40 min boat ride from Dangriga, we were worried that we might run out of things to do and see. No need to have worried! Snorkeling and diving trips every day, led by really knowledgeable and friendly guides. Self-guided sea kayaking around TC and nearby Coco Plum Island as well as out to the truly spectacular Bird Caye sanctuary. There was even some great snorkeling around TC's newly opened open air Starfish Lounge perched over the water. And for relaxing, the island is long enough that it's easy to find a private beach or open air palapa and terrace to just chill.

We stayed in a cabana #5, a 7 min walk from the main dining/bar palapa, but we loved the isolation, especially at night when the stars came out. The cabanas are comfy and you look directly out over the water and take in all the cool sea breezes; the open deck with hammock is an amazing place to watch the sunrise. We didn't stay in a casita, but they are set back a bit from the water; not as direct a view of the water as cabanas, but you'd definitely catch the breezes, and the views from its roof deck is pretty sweet.

Food was excellent and variety very good, considering everything has to be transported out to the island every day. What's nice at the meals is that the tables are set up so that you can easily engage with your fellow travelers if you want to; we often pushed tables together to trade "fish" stories of the day.

The TC owners have done a great job at creating a very welcoming, open atmosphere and are incredibly helpful and interesting to talk to. Ask Steve, the owner, to show you his slide show on the making of TC. It's a real testament to the passion and dedication needed to make a place as special as TC.

My wife and I can't wait to return...

My husband and I typically don't like to travel to the same place twice, but we had some an incredible time at Thatch Caye two years ago and knew we just had to come back! This time we stayed for 5 days. It was sublime. We love the charm, ethos and service that you get at Thatch Caye. Steve, the host, is one of the kindest individuals you will ever meet and attracts and nurtures a great staff/community. Each time we go we make new friends that we look forward to keeping in touch with after our time together on the island. I was sad to read the review below because I feel that the guest just didn't get into the groove. If you signed up for snorkle or diving or fishing you simply just need to check in with any of the managers (Steve, Balin, or the dive master Martin) during cocktail hour or breakfast -- to ask him the schedule for the day. They always accommodated everyone's wishes unless there are some serious weather issues to content with. Each day we would do some lounging (north beach, main beach, south pier, pelican pier) and a snorkle trip and then also did several self-guided kayaking trips (out to bird caye, around thatch key following a couple dolphins, out to coco plum, etc). There are also some really cool new hangouts that Steve and his team have created including the starfish lounge and the bamboo glider that are both just spectacular at sunset.

Kevin the new snorkle guide was amazing. Each day he would help us discover something that our tired city eyes would never see -- a nurse shark, rare slipper lobster, moray eel, HUGE spotted eagle ray that soared around us for a few minutes. So fun. There is also an amazing little fish ecosystem sprouting up around the docks and you can simply swim out from the beach and experience TONS of fish -- schools of grunts, barracuda, needle fish, starfish and other cool stuff.

We stayed in the cabana for second time. We love the simplicity and intimacy of being right out over the water. After being cooped up in NYC all winter, it felt like we were almost sleeping outside. Again, its an eco-resort, so don't go expecting mac daddy accommodations. They've thought of everything you need for a comfortable stay (comfy bed, hot showers, great vistas/breezes, clean cabanas, fresh filtered water, places to conveniently store your stuff, beach towels, etc).

Food was yummy and improved from our last visit. The new chef, Alberto, is a sweetheart and made some really tasty meals -- my favorite was traditional Belizean beans and rice with stewed chicken -- so good. He also made a really cool cassava cake.

And a note about transfers, the staff are always super accommodating, but please just note that they are juggling the schedules of up to 24 guests so sometimes you have to roll with what works best for the majority. It is just one of those tradeoffs that you accept staying at a really special intimate gem like Thatch Caye. Come prepared to join the community, communicate your wishes and roll with what happens. You'll be glad you did!

the island itself is just beautiful with accommodations that are very well integrated with the surrounding environment, long boardwalk, lush vegetation and many, many hammocks to sit and read or just watch the clouds roll by. i had an intense sense of serenity waking with the sunrise each morning, watching the sunset followed by millions of stars in the evening and falling asleep to the lapping waves. and i was very pleased, as a toursit in such a lovely place, to know that solar and wind are the predominant power sources and that minimizing the impact to the island's ecosystem is a very high priority.

the staff and owners were just wonderful; i cannot lavish praise effusively enough upon each of them for all that they did for us. they knew each of our names before we had the chance to even catch our breath and always greeted us with a smile. the rooms and public areas were kept very neat and clean and everything smelled of sunshine and fresh air. and the food! the food that was served was fresh and delicious.....even the bottomless pit of my stomach was left feeling very satisfied after each meal. the staff not only went out of their way to accommodate our party's various dietary needs but was more than happy to bring us seconds (and sometimes thirds), if available. we also had the very special privilege of going out on an impromptu extra snorkeling adventure that the owner, Steve, and our guide, Alben, thought we would enjoy. it is truly a rare pleasure to see folks doing what they love and then sharing that joy with you!

i can honestly say that i have never experienced such a feeling of welcome and genuineness from a group of people that started as strangers. i will definitely return, hopefully sooner rather than later!

I just came back from a 5-day yoga retreat at Thatched Caye and it was a a wonderful place to get away and disconnect. The service was great ; staff friendly; and the food was healthy and outstanding. The cabana I was in had a great rooftop patio where you can nap in a hammock during the day and look at bountiful stars at night. Would definitely consider coming back.

Yes, you can experience paradise on earth. You can have your feet in the white sands of Thatch Caye and know that real happiness is right here, right now.

I was a participant in the Yoga Central Atlanta Retreat from March 3rd to March 8th, with a group of nine women led by Yoga Central's owner, Elena Grant Napper. The theme of our retreat was "Be Happy Now." And, oh, how we are!

Thatch Caye was just the right location for a deeply restorative get-away and vision quest for the soul:

-We stayed in elegant, clean cabanas and casitas perched over the soothing, gentle waves of turquoise seas. We experienced the deep sleep of children in this safe, peaceful sanctuary of Nature.
-We dined on exquisitely fresh and healthy meals prepared by a true Mayan chef who entertained us with rare creativity in his menu design. We literally applauded after meals. We could eat and eat, three full meals a day, and still feel light and energetic for yoga classes and other island activities.
-We enjoyed three fantastic snorkeling expeditions in six days, along with plenty of kayaking and swimming anytime we wanted. The waters, we were told, had never been so clear. Located on the second largest coral reef in the world, the underwater sights around Thatch Caye are second to none.
-The story of Thatch Caye itself is worth the visit. I won't give away everything here so you can experience it for yourself. Suffice it to say that if you think there is something you cannot do, go to Thatch Caye. You will be reminded that there is nothing that can stop you from realizing your dreams, and through the inspiration gleaned from this place, creative solutions to the challenges in your life will effortlessly begin to reveal themselves to you once again.

The genuine friendships we formed with the owners and staff of Thatch Caye were a gift we did not even expect but will gratefully cherish over the years to come. Heartfelt thanks to all of you! The members of Yoga Central Atlanta will return again and again!
