Just returned from Kanantik and had a wonderful time. Everyone was so friendly and the location is something right out of a movie. I can see if are a 20 something and think Britney Spears is a role model then you might not appreciate the effort that has gone into making Kanantik a unique experience. Kanantik is not a spring break resort. It is a quiet, picturesque, all-inclusive resort with a keen attention to detail. It is nice that the owner makes an effort to keep Kanantik pristine, quiet, and of a class that rivals many 5 star European resorts.

If you don't appreciate these kinds of details then you should probably go to some of the other standard fare resorts.

Be sure to do some snorkeling on South Water Caye.

Yes it is a great spot. Artfully done. Beautiful. Decent food.
But the owner is an utter pain in the posterior. Negative, contentious,
at times amusing but after a while just tiresome.
He really spoils the experience and you can't avoid him.
We saw him treat the staff with contempt too. Not good.
Paradise? An Unhappy Paradise.

We spent six days at Kanantik over the New Year holiday, and it was a truly wonderful experience. The property is an immaculate little corner of paradise. The cabanas are big, isolated, and beautiful. The bathroom are especially luxurious with their wonderful semi-outdoor showers.

We happen to despise big resorts and prefer more intimate places with a strong focus on quality and service. With 25 cabanas, Kanantik is the perfect size resort by our standards. We had a chance to meet a nice variety of interesting people, and the pre-dinner gatherings in the lounge each night provided a natural opportunity to mingle with new and old friends.

The food is excellent, combining great local ingredients with the owner's Italian flair. Pizza night sounded a little silly to me for a Caribbean resort, but it's pretty wonderful to order any kind of pizza you can imagine (like lobster, basil and garlic) on the beach in Belize and have it arrive with the stunning flavor you rarely find outside Italy.

The activities are great and quite well planned. We went on a pleasant canoe trip, toured Mayan ruins, and went diving twice, all included in the bill. While Kanantik is not cheap, the quality of the accomodation, meals, service, and activities make it a splurge that is truly good value.

Some people complained about the owner favoring some guests over others. We definitely found him to be quirky and awkward with us, while much more friendly to others. I can't say we cared that much, but it was odd. We also thought it a bit unusual that the resort does not allow children, but the owner's own 5-year old is ubiquitous -- and not shy.

We did get bitten up a bit by mosquitoes but, hey, it's the jungle, and keeping bug spray around helped quite a bit. We saw no other major critters though a couple other guests did report scorpion encounters.

I highly recommend Kanantik for anyone who wants to splurge on a wonderfully relaxing and intimate resort.

Kanantik offers a fairly high degree of luxury and service for what seems to be available among the resorts along Belize's coast.

As in the fabeled TV series, Fantasy Island, our host was a strikingly direct, enthusiastic and enigmatic man who made every attempt, be it by his own hand or indirectly through his staff, to bestow our wish for our stay at his resort: a lovely, relaxing honeymoon.

Here's what we loved:
1. The tours and tour guides. People like Uncle Peter and Kelvin were knowledgeable and exceptionally pleasant travel guides. The resort offers packages which contain certain tours. We loved canoeing and snorkeling. There were 5-6 others to choose from.
2. The wildlife. It was always exciting, being near/in the jungle, to encounter alligators, BIG lizards, Igouti, etc... There were also reports of the jaguar prowling around the pool late at night -- that was bit unsettling to most guests, admittedly.
3. Clifton -- a really nice man who worked as a bartender, remembered our drink preferences and gave me a pointer in backgammon.

We also liked:
3. The food. They made a real effort to offer good food. The breakfasts were excellent and once we figured out that we could order a simple fish dish in place of what was being offered for lunch or dinner, we were happy as could be.
4. The pool and pool area -- very tasteful, refreshing and relaxing.
5. The owner himself -- very friendly, very attentive to details (such as getting the cable and TV to work during the World Cup Football Games).

We would have given Kanantik an Excellent rating if not for the following:
1) The beach. The ocean water in front of the resort is filthy (Kanantik is properly advertised as a "Reef & Jungle" resort -- nowhere does it say "beach".)
2) The Cabana's were infested with bugs -- they could have done a better job sealing up cracks to keep the bugs out. We came to the resort like fresh meat, admittedly at the start of the rainy season, and left the resort eaten alive.
