“First Lady Suite”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2006

My husband and I stayed in the top floor "First Lady Suite". We splurged because it was the end of our trip-although the price was hardly a splurge. The room had two beds-king and queen, seating area, "kitchen" with microwave, fridge and coffee maker, lovely bathroom, balcony and terrace. The terrace was huge, with a hammock, table, chairs, benches, etc. It was a great place to hang out. We loved it.

The accommodations at Martha's are very well decorated and well kept. However, the service from the staff at the hotel and the restaurant was very poor. We sat a table for nearly 15 minutes waiting to receive menus. After we finally ordered, we waited nearly a 45 minutes for our food. During our wait, the server told us 30 minutes into our wait that one of the dishes we ordered was not available. The staff manning the hotel desk were polite but gave faulty information about the tours. One the hotel staff told us lunch was included on the tour before we signed up. When checking out the next day, the day after the tour, we found out we were charged for lunch and that it was not included. The hotel staff also gave bad information about bus schedules and faires around the city. Even though I was very disappointed with staff, I think the quality of teh accomodations made up for the poor service. Just be wary of information you recieve from the staff.

Martha's is a wonderful place; affordable, clean, and friendly - everything you need. We only stayed one night but would have stayed longer had our trip permitted. This is the place you should stay in town. We had breakfast downstairs and there are several restaurants within walking distance. We met Martha herself and she was very welcoming. We went on the Actun Tunich Muknal caving trip during the day - a must-do - and stayed at Martha's. We highly recommend Martha's if you're staying in town.

Martha's is the best hotel in the centre of town. Clean, comfortable with personable staff. A single was about US$40 I think. The retaurant next door (you can put the food bill on your hotel to reduce cash expenditures) is also a wonderful little oasis with great, cheap food.

If Martha's is full there is now a second "branch" open which they take you to. It is 5 mins walk from the original, with bigger rooms, which are very clean (they include a kitchen). however as there a bigger with more faclities they are more expensive - I paid US$55 for a single (well, there are no singles so I guess that is the price for a double). The downside (and also perhaps a positive) is that it is 5 minutes from the centre of town, while the original is slap bang in the middle (although noise was not a problem).

If I went back to San Ignacio (although it is pretty ugly, and not on my list of places to retun to) it is the only place i would stay.

If you are looking for things to do there I would not recommend the medicine trail canoe trip if you are tempted. You see very little on the canoe ride and it is disappointing - unless you love trees I guess. Heard great things about Actun Tunichil Muknal cave trip to see Mayan objects and skeletons, but it is US$65 per person...
