“Make sure you book tours w/ Mario!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2012

I gave this 5 stars because of our fantastic experience with the hotel tour guide, Mario. We spent the better part of two days with him (first to Xunantunich, then to Caracol). I could go on and on about him, but I'll spare you and keep it short: he is deeply knowledgeable & passionate about all things Mayan, very easy-going, and extremely friendly and engaging. He even invited my boyfriend and I over for dinner with his family! The ruins were breathtaking as they are, but Mario's expertise truly made the trip memorable. Even if you're not staying at Cahal Pech Resort, see if you can hop in one of the groups with him. ;)

The hotel rooms themselves weren't anything particularly special, but they were reasonably clean and comfortable. The views from the balcony are really the highlight--you can see the entire city of San Ignacio beneath and around you, and the foggy mornings are particularly stunning.

Staff were helpful when booking tours or giving information. However restaurant was less than adequate...especially breakfast. We were charged $7.50US and always left unsatisfied and hungry due to lack of food being replenished. When we complained nothing was done for us. The cabanas were ok but over priced. Lastly, we felt very secluded from the rest of San Ignacio.

We recently returned from four nights at Cahal Pech.

Pros:
-Our transfers both to and from the hotel were seamless and the drive across Belize was smooth and very pretty.
-Most interactions with the front desk staff were pleasant. Oscar at the bar was super and we thoroughly enjoyed him. Mr. Chen is a lovely person as well.
-The food was good- we especially enjoyed lunch. The kitchen did accommodate our special requests (my son is a picky eater).
-The pool was gorgeous, clean and featured the best part of Cahal Pech- THE VIEW. Anyone staying in San Ignacio must go up and at least have a drink at the bar to see this. Spectacular.
-Access to Cahal Pech ruins- right around the corner and we had to all to ourselves most of the time.
-Tikal tour- Mario took us over to the border and he was fabulous. I would love to spend a day just talking to him – a great guy. And it was so nice to see his smiling face waiting for us when we got back to the border. The drivers and guide provided inside of Guatemala and Tikal were superb as well.

Cons:
-Did not receive the room we paid for. We reserved a family cabana in November of last year- and reconfirmed this a week prior to our departure. Upon arrival, we were escorted to a room in the “hotel” section with one bed. Three people- one bed. Went back down and asked for the room which we had reserved. After some discussion among staff we were led to a one room cabana with two full size beds. At that point we agreed among ourselves to just deal with it and start enjoying our vacation but it was disappointing.
-Breakfast is overpriced.

Could go either way:
-AC in the cabana’s. Not good but we signed up for the cabanas knowing this.
-Sundays at the pool. The hotel sells wristbands to allow locals and non guests to use the pool on Sundays. We personally really enjoyed this as the local kids were fun and my son had a great time swimming with them but I can see if may bother some folks. The pool did get pretty packed.
-CP seems to cater to the teen group travel crowd.

All in all next time we will stay in town and come up for a drink and a view. On a Sunday ( :.

Our family, of four, stayed here for four nights in the family suite located in the new building. The main room had a king size bed, and also there were two double beds in a seperate room. It was a very large room and very clean. We had a nice balcony where we enjoyed the beautiful view, a small fridge that came in handy, and two air conditioners (one in each room) that worked great. We used their laundry service for $7.00 a load, the pool once (which is a very nice pool), and ate breakfast there one morning. The food was good, but they couldn't keep up with the amount of people there, so everything was quick to empty in the buffet line. We chose this hotel for it's location and proximity to town and were happy with our choice.

We stayed three nites at the Cahal Pech hotel. We had a cabana - it had a amazing view of the city from a screened patio, and chairs and hammock to boot. The room was large and had its own bath. It was thatched, which is very romantic to look at ; but practically speaking is difficult to keep clean. When we walked in the room it looked like it hadn't been used ( or cleaned) in weeks; but realized later that it was just because of the thatch. The water pump died and so we had no water fro a day. Having said that , the staff were incredible and worked very hard to help. They also credited us for one day for our inconvenience. The air-con worked but had a hard time cooling the room because of the high thatched ceiling; but the room also had a fan so we were comfortable without aircon. In spite of the things listed above I still gave a #4 to the Cahal Pech Hotel because (1) amazing and wonderful staff , (2) amazing views from our cabana (3) convenient location in San Ignacio .

My family of 3 spent four nights at Cahal Pech and had a nice stay. The staff was very friendly and accommodating (special kudos to the weekend staff), the pools were very nice, the bar was awesome and we had several nice meals at the restaurant. We stayed in a cabana and I will agree with other reviewers that it was rustic, much like staying at camp when I was a kid. The air conditioning did not work well, the shower had hot water and plenty of water pressure. We also had issues with the wifi and just stuck with the computer in the office area which was fine for our needs (I mean, you're on vacation, take a break!!). They booked a couple of really awesome tours for us ATM and Caracol, which we really enjoyed. Our ATM tour guide was Carlos and our Caracol guide was John with Mayawalk Tours, both guides were awesome and made our tours unforgettable.

I loved staying in this hotel. It is a little rustic but in some ways very eligant. The cabanas are cute and I enjoyed walking up the hill to the three pools, dining area, and bar. They have a gift shop with Guatemalan handmade articles also.

The A/C in the cabanas does not work well, but it was quite adequate for me.

Frankly, I would rather stay in a hotel like this with authentic local atmosphere than a Hyatt any day. All the help were friendly and courteous. The food is good. The water is safe to drink.

Room Tip: I loved the cabanas. Some have better views and patio, so ask to see some options.
