duPlooy's is a very unique experience. It will be an excellent one for some, and an absolute nightmare for others. For my husband and I, we had an unforgetable stay and will remember it fondly for years. That's not to say that there could not have been some improvements..........
duPlooy's can best be described as "unpredictable". You won't be able to predict many things, such as what wildlife you'll see, or whether you will have hot water for a shower or even electricity. The best type of traveler to stay here would be one who can roll with the punches.
We stayed in a jungle lodge room, although I had tried desparately to get a bungalow room because I thought it would be nicer. But the jungle lodge rooms were just fine and were pretty quiet. There is no airconditioning in the rooms but lots of ceiling fans. It wasn't that hot out and it was such an experience to go to sleep to the sounds of the jungle animals and wake up to the calls of the exotic birds flitting just outside your window. You wouldn't hear this with a loud airconditioner rumbling away. The room and bathroom was clean and very comfortable. The only complaint I might have is that the beds were extremely noisy. They would make a large creaking sound everytime you moved even slightly.
I was a little aprehensive about how good the food would be since it is not like you have any other choices as to where to eat. But overall we were very pleased by the quality of the food and the service. The only suggestion I have is that the way food and drinks are billed to the room needs to be more streamlined. Every time we purchased meals or drinks, there was always some amount of confusion whether we were on a meal plan, and if so, which type, and there seemed to be a challenge with the staff getting all of the drinks tallied onto the right tabs. One server was commenting that she was in trouble with the owner because she had mistakenly not billed a large amount of drinks to some guests the night before. The servers always seemed a little harried when you were checking out and there was no easy way for the patron to keep track of how much they were spending. I just think a new system needs to be developed. The way the servers were rushing around and trying to figure out the tabs, it seemed as if it was the opening week of the resort.
The overlook bar was pretty much a sanctuary. To be able to sit back, drink a beer and watch the wonderful birds right in front of you, it was magical. We saw the famous toucans as well as the elusive kinkajous. We spent way too much time, and money, at the bar. It was the hub of evening social activities as well and it was fun to compare notes of what you did that day with the other guests.
The guides and excursions were all top rate. Our first day trip was to Xunantunich, Barton Creek Caves and Green Hills Butterfly Ranch. Our guide was with us all day and we had a wonderful time. At the end of the day, we were to cross the river via canoe back to duPlooy's. However, no one had brought the canoe over to the side of the river that we were on. So our guide swam across the river to get the canoe for us! He was great.
One day we just stayed on the property and walked through the botanical gardens and took a morning guided birdwalk. The morning bird walk with the onsite guide is a must-do, even for very inexperienced birders such as ourselves.
We also arranged a day tour to Tikal through duPlooy's. However, the night before we were to leave at 5am the next day, the other group that was to be on the tour with us cancelled, thereby making the tour very expensive for us to do since we would be the only ones on it. Stephanie at the front desk was kind enough to call other hotels to see if we could join one of their tours for a lesser price, which we were able to do. However, the duPlooy's driver in the morning drove us 20 minutes down the dirt road to the main highway and dropped us off in the middle of the road with no knowledge of who was going to be picking us up or when. This was a little unnerving as we stuck out like sore thumbs sitting there along the highway but eventually the tour van came and picked us up. FYI - Tikal was amazing and worth the full day tour and price. An unforgetable experience.
The only other thing that happened during our stay that was a little inconvenient was that half way through a shower one day, the water was cut off to a drizzel. After waiting for at least 10 minutes and sending my husband over to the front desk to let them know, the water still never got turned on. It was a little frustrating. I think they were having generator problems, which are bound to happen when an entire property runs on generators.
Just an FYI to future visitors - when we were there this winter, another resort was being constructed right on the other side of the river from duPlooy's. You could see and hear the bulldozers from the end of the canopy walk. This is going to dramatically change the feel of the remoteness of duPlooy's. I heard that the owner of duPlooy's didn't even know the property was for sale or else they would have tried to purchase it. That was a little disappointing because part of the special feeling you get at duPlooy's is that you are miles away from civilization.
All in all, we really loved duPlooy's. It has it's challenges, but also big rewards that you wouldn't get anywhere else, such as life time memories of kinkajous coming out at night and the feeding frenzy of the toucans that come to visit in the morning. It was a great experience!
