I stayed in the main lodge with my adult daughter in June 2008.
The lodge sits on a hill outside the town of San Ignacio. The fact that it is located in a rain forest offers positive and negative aspects. Positves: the staff and owners were very pleasant and helpful, the grounds were well kept and the location was great. The meals were outstanding, consisting of several courses and using fresh, locally-grown food. The outside dining room was also nice and was a great way to meet other guests, but be prepared for mosquitoes and an array of other flying insects.
Negatives: the main lodge is cheaply built with paper-thin walls and openings to the outside which kept a line of ants marching through our bathroom at night. The towels and bed linens were also thin and stained. The single energy-saver lighbbulb overhead gave the room an uncomfortable feel.
Again, being in a rain forest you can expect lots of insects. And perhaps the lodge's efforts to be eco-friendly had something to do with the single lightbulb and low thread count.
My daughter thought the room was fine, so perhaps it is just me that requires a few more creature comforts.
