“Beautiful adventure in the rainforest”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

My sister and I stayed here at the beginning of May. It was the first place we stayed, on our 10-day Belizean adventure and the best one on the mainland, by far. Right on the river, birds and wildlife galore. They were very good about making sure we had something to do everyday or nothing if that's what we chose. They allowed us to customize our Caracol Mayan ruin tour because we were the only two people to go that day. They even fixed our rental car that broke down as we pulled into their 'parking lot'. The food was very good and the views were unbeatable. The cabins themselves were adorable and the hammocks out front were the perfect touch to a perfect place to stay and begin our adventure through one of the coolest countries I have ever been to. I'd like to go back every year if I could. Everyone should experience their gem of a lodge.

We enjoyed our stay at Black Rock. The scenery really is stunning as mentioned before. The food is good, which is hard to find in Belize and the staff are overall helpful and friendly.

However, I do think, given the price, the management does have room for improvement. The swimming hole area needs to be upgraded. There were empty bottles/garbage consistently around it. They were never picked up (we were there for five days). The beach was never raked. There were no chairs near the beach area. As a matter of fact, we walked right by the swimming hole and had to ask the management where it was.

The window in the shower and toilet had no curtain which was very strange given there were curtains all around the bedroom area. I mentioned this to the management and was told I was the first to bring this up.

There is also no defined laundry facility, which was a pain as I hand washed our clothes in our room. Because there was no clothes line provided, we had clothes strewn all over our room to dry. There was mention that you could wash your clothes in the leftover water once the cleaning staff were done. This sounded pretty gross so I never bothered.

The activities were really expensive given the quality of what you did. We took a canoe ride down the river with a guide and were left at Chaa Creek for lunch. We were supposed to stay until 3:00pm, but decided we wanted to go back earlier. We called Black Rock at least 4 times and waited for 2 hours before they sent someone. It was irritating to say the least.

However, the guides for our other activities were really good. We loved Barton's Creek and visiting the Mayan Ruin. We also enjoyed talking to the other guests at dinner. Overall Black Rock is a comfortable, middle of the road lodge that could be an amazing lodge with a bit of tweaking.

Giving this resort only 5's is an understatement!! It trully is in the rain forest as it's a 6 mile trip down a dirt (but in reasonable shape) road. You wake up every morning to the sounds of the river below and the Tucans and countless other birds above. The entire resort is clean with very few bugs or pests. The service is inpeckable!!! They go out of their way to satisfy every need or want that you could have. All of them speak English so if you don't know Spanish it's okay. The only part that we were not completely satisfied, and we're splitting hairs here, is some of the dinners were not a 5, more like a 3. But the service was still great, the ambience was almost magical, and overall we were very sad to leave. You have to stay at this resort!!!

Black Rock Lodge is really a beautiful place to stay. Although it's slightly pricey, I would say it is definitely worth the money.

We were a group of three female friends staying for three nights. My favourite thing about Black Rock was the scenery; it was absolutely stunning. It is very remote meaning that we did have to stay in and around the site for the three days we were there but I would not have chosen a different location.

Black Rock do offer the facility of arranging tours but, as we had already done ATM, Tikal and horseriding up mountain pine ridge, we were able to take advantage of the cheaper options: tubing is free and Black Rock put on a day hike and a night hike which were only $12 each and great fun. You are also able to wander the grounds and hike up the hill without a guide and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring the site further.

Although you have a choice for breakfast and lunch, dinner is a set meal with a meat and a vegetarian option. The meals were great and different each time, but I was glad that we had only booked three nights as I would prefer more variety for a longer stay.

All the staff were incredibly friendly and I would definitely recommend Black Rock to people who enjoy the outdoors as they would get a lot from the experience.

Room Tip: We stayed in cabin 1 and the walls of the bathroom didn't connect with the ceiling which meant w...

Remarkable place, just stay here and do the on-site trips - particularly enjoyed the Horse Riding trip (to a Cave full of Bats) and a Canoe trip down the river in torrential rain (also Bird Watching) - the guides are fantastic, knowledgeable and a good laugh.

Its a bit expensive and without your own transport you are somewhat trapped as its half an hour by car to the main road. However, the food was great and it was a wonderful place to be for a few days.

After looking at Trip Advisor reviews, we knew we wanted to stay at Black Rock. The lodge was beautiful and our cabin was great. We booked all of our tours through them and were very pleased as well. Our guide was Carlos, who was extremely knowledgeable and had an in depth explanation for every question we asked. If there is a downside to the lodge, it is its distance from town. It is a long difficult drive to San Ignacio and costs $40 US each way, nearly forcing you to eat dinner there every night. The food is good, but overpriced compared to the majority of Belize, including San Ignacio, in our experience.

Our family of 5 (kids ages 19, 17 and 11) just spent four incredible nights at Black Rock. From the minute we were greeted by Giovanni upon our arrival from Belize City to the minute we left ... we enjoyed every bit of our stay. The staff was welcoming and accommodating, and always trying to make sure that we were having a good time. The meals were fantastic and we loved playing games and talking to the other guests in the main dining area. The setting is gorgeous - we hiked up one of the nearby mountains, tubed down the river and went running and mountain biking. We loved our cabins, which were clean and appropriate simple for the jungle. The lodge organized our trips to Tical and ATM (not to be missed - adventure of a lifetime). We can't wait to go back!
