“Macal River Camp - What A Fantastic Experience!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 12, 2014

Our stay at Macal River Camp was a joy! Each large tent, canvas walls with mesh windows on all 4 sides, is on raised platform and has a verandah with hammock and chairs. While the accommodation is basic - two firm beds, bedside tables and 2 single beds that double as places to put suitcases and lay out one's belongings, it was perfect for its jungle setting. The outhouses (with electricity and sinks), and the shower house (hot water was a bit erratic) were spotlessly clean. At dusk, oil lamps were lit in each tent and the thatched, open-sided dining area had electricity and an outlet for re-charging batteries. The set meals were great with the menu changing each day. Breakfast - endless tea and coffee available from 6.30am on (good for the early risers up to see the birds), and there were seconds in everything one asked for. Dinner was 3 courses, imaginative and tasty. Dosio and his wife and son Ariel were charming and attentive hosts, always available to arrange excursions, provide useful information and in our case, shuttle us down to Chaa Creek as one of our party was unable to walk the trail to the resort. After dinner a campfire was lit and we sat with the other camp guests to chat about our day, gaze at the stars and listen to the night noises of the jungle - mainly frogs, owls and howler monkeys. Colourful birds, orchids and other exotic flowering plants, even an occasional Paca (a large herbivorous Central American Rodent) added to Macal Camp's jungle ambiance.
Best of all, we had access to the amenities at the luxurious Chaa Creek Lodge without having to pay its much higher prices! A 10-minute walk along a trail above the river and you were on their property. We used their pool daily, went on guided bird walks, could have lunch there if we wanted to, use their safety deposit box as well as canoe up or down the Macal River. Couldn't ask for better value.

We thought we would have to rough it in Belize but Chaa Creek was gorgeous. The restaurant looked after my gluten free diet wonderfully. Swimming in the large pool was lovely and the massage was very professional.

I stayed here for three nights in May of 2013. Perfect location to explore the ruins and other great sites in Central Belize. Our days were spent between enjoying the great hiking trails and canoeing down the river! After a long day sitting by the pool and enjoying a great cocktail sealed the evening. The food was amazing and the staff was top notch!

We had an incredible 3 night stay at Chaa Creek, and we wish we could have stayed longer. We were well greeted at the airport when we arrived and check-in was professional. The property is very well maintained, and our cottage room was wonderful. The accommodations were comfortable, very clean and we felt pampered without the glut and excess that comes with a luxury resort.

It is obvious that the owners take a lot of care and pride in the property, maintaining the ecosystem and the lodge's footprint on it. The pool was wonderful and very welcome after our daily excursions. The guides for our excursions were impressively knowledgeable and very experienced in history, culture, and were naturalists eager to share Belize with us.

Our stay at Chaa Creek was a truly wonderful jungle experience in a very comfortable environment.where conversation and preservation are the focus.

Room Tip: There are many accommodation options from rustic to very comfortable.

Spent three nights at this beautiful location in the Belizean Rain Forest. Delightfully spacious thatched lodge with much privacy, very comfy bed, no air con but fans for cooling if needed. Balcony with hammocks if needed to lie and watch the abundance of bird life. Lots to do with natural history trails some accompanied by knowledgeable guides ( for our package, all included). River activities with canoeing etc. Beautifully maintained site with miles of trails in the surrounding forests. A multitude of super friendly staff. The owners live on site and are visible around during the day. Now to our but. Like the previous writer we had some reservations about food quality. The problem is its variability. The dinner food tends to be limited in range and somewhat over priced for the quality on offer. Pricing is also confusing as prices are not available because there are no menu cards. One evening meal was frankly poor but breakfast the following day was a delight. A much more extensive pool side menu is available with prices during the day with much better quality than the evening dining experience. This should not take away too much from the whole experience which is very good rather than excellent. If the owners, Mick and Lucy could get in a chef with more ability and imagination this place would be a complete winner. So in terms of overall value we award only average for food but the rest is fabulous.

We stayed at Chaa Creek for 4 nights Feb. 5 to 9. We were in one of the casitas. The room was great; comfortable bed, plenty of light, sitting area, big bathroom, nice porch with sitting area. The people who work at the resort are all friendly, knowledgeable and helpful.
The property was lovely and well maintained
On the property is the Medicine trail and the Blue Morpho Butterfly farm.
They offer nature or bird walks and canoing on the river.
So you wonder where the "but" is? We had 4 breakfasts, 4 dinners and one lunch there. The first night the dinner was fabulous; after that it was good to mediocre. There is alot more to chose from for lunch. The last 2 nights there was only one choice for dessert.
I wish they had a little something "going on" at night. Maybe someone playing guitar in the bar? Or a presentation in the convention room of local lore or a presentaion of all there is to do at the resort and nearby?
I also wish they had a shuttle into town several times a day, altho we had excursions planned with Via Venture.
The pool area was nice BUT when the tile around the pool gets wet, it is extremely slippery.
Would I go back if I were in that area again? Most likely

We picked Chaa Creek on the recommendation from one friend who has lived in Beize, without checking any other resorts and were not disappointed. All the luxury and exceptional service makes you extremely comfortable without being lavish, and is a reflection on the owners ( who are evident on the property and take great interest in their guests) and their devoted staff. We were there for the birding experience and got more than expected. All guides for the many tours, activities or excursions offered, were exceptionally friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. We came home realizing we had just spent a very active, but extremely relaxing, educational vacation experience. We chose to spend a full week at the lodge rather than take a package to other locations, which enabled us to fully appreciate all that it has to offer as well as its dedication to their staff, the surrounding communities and Belize itself. Would fully recommend this experience to anyone wanting to appreciate nature in all its beauty while living in comfort in the heart of it. Thank you Mick and Lucy and staff for one of the best vacations we have taken. Debbie Robertaccio and Al Scherzer Miss you already!
