It was a number of years ago that we stayed at Ek' Tun but it stands out as one of the more memorable places we've stayed. It is not too hard to get to in a hire car, but still nicely off the beaten path and you get a real feeling of heading into the jungle. The location is magical, the land beautiful and the casita picture-postcard perfect. Both casitas is well separated so there is an excellent sense of privacy. The second one was not occupied when we were there which made it even better and meant we had the gorgeous pool all to ourselves.
The food was delicious with many ingredients coming from the kitchen garden. I loved having cafe con leche while sitting outside the casita each morning. Phyllis also took us out to dinner in the local town one of the nights, which made for nice variation. There is lots to do directly from the lodge like hiking, kayaking or swimming, or just exploring the grounds. A very special experience and I highly recommend it. We had lunch in one of the large well-known lodges in the area one day and while nice it seemed big and impersonal compared to Ek' Tun, and we were glad to return to Ek' Tun as it felt like we had discovered a secret piece of paradise.
It is a jungle lodge so expect lots of animals, insects and things that go bump in the night. My wife got a whack in the face from something one night and we don't know what it was - probably a bat. That's all part of the fun! We stayed in July and while it was vert hot during the day it was ok for sleeping at night thanks to a breeze through the casita.
Phyllis is a lovely woman with a solidly new-age outlook. She knows a lot about Mayan culture and the local area and I really enjoyed listening to her stories at dinner. Don't hesitate to stay here.
