This is a great chance to get close to Iguanas and to see them in all stages of aging. Of course, the babies are the cutest.

“Great experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2014

We were so fascinated and enchanted by the iguanas and Eddie, their keeper and our guide, that we spent much more time with them than was alotted for the tour. It's a wonderful project to preserve the green iguana; we learned a lot and enjoyed it immensely.

“A Great, Beneficial, & Fun Project”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 27, 2014

The Iguana Conservation Project at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel is a very worthwhile iguana conservation project that raises money for the protection & propagation of the iguana species, while providing a fun experience to the visitor. You get a great deal of knowledge about iguanas, while getting to feed, handle & even 'wear' a number of iguanas. The conservation project is right on the hotel grounds & you can tell that the handlers really care about the iguanas and their preservation. For a small fee, you can help make a difference while at the same time having a real fun experience.

Go and see those lovely iguanas, both the big ones and the tiny babies. You can even pet them. It only takes an hour and you learn a lot about these cool lizards.

“I Wanna Iguana”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2014

Wanna know more about iguanas? Head to the San Ignacio Resort Hotel in Cayo and find out loads and loads of info on iguanas. That place is the trailblazer in iguana conservation. They initiated a Green Iguana educational, preservation and research program on their property several years ago. The Green Iguana in Belize were becoming a threatened species. Too many were killed for their eggs and meat, causing the survival quotient to take a nose-dive. Realizing that Green Iguanas were on their way to becoming an endangered species the ecologically minded people at San Ignacio Hotel decided to do something about it. So they built a cavernous, green-house structure as a habitat for hatchling iguanas.
The habitat gives visitors the opportunity to get a closer look at iguanas and to learn how vital the iguanas are to the ecological balance of the river environment. In conjunction to the iguana habitat the resort offers an Adopt an Iguana Program and an Iguana Kids Club, which have both garnered loads of international attention.
The habitat allows the visitors and school children an up close and personal experience with iguanas. The tour guide explains the process of egg incubation, hatching, rearing and releasing juvenile iguanas, (a year and a half to two year olds) into the wild. The ambitious program aims to create awareness, educate, and to repopulate the riverbanks of Belize with those dinosaur-looking critters.
The tour is a hands-on encounter where the iguanas can be held and scrutinized. In an effort to expand public awareness of reptiles, the hotel has designated its lush, tropical forest backyard as a central site in the conservation and propagation of the endangered Green Iguana population.
The tour is time well spent.
