“Loved it here”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2013

Stayed in the "Red" room for 3 nights and totally enjoyed it - located very close to ATM caves and only 20 minutes by bus from San Ignacio. The owners are very helpful with things to do in the area, taking guests on a guided tour of the Mayan ruins on their land, and local animal life. Breakfasts and dinners were very tasty, cooked by the owner, Madeleine. They have 5 very friendly dogs that will accompany guests for walks along the river.

If you are looking to explore ATM (Actun Tunichil Miknal), one of the best caving experiences in the world, this is THE place to stay. Madeleine and her family are most helpful in making arrangements and the cave, containing actual Mayan skeletons, is really an adventure. Plus she is a great cook and makes dinner and breakfast for her guests!!! The cabins are cozy.

Room Tip: Both private cabins and backpacker dorm cabins are available and all are treated well.

Lower Dover met our expectations and then some!!

We had originally reserved the red cabin for our 1st night in Belize but due to issues out of our control wound up having to depart Guatemala a few days late. Madeline and her son, Justin were extremely accommodating and swapped our dates no problem keeping us in 1 of the cool cabins (we later found out that all of the cabins are awesome!) we were hoping for. The minute we arrived Madeline greeted us at our car and showed us our home for the night. Literally, placed all our belongings down and were out and about touring the Lower Dover Mayan Ruins along the medicinal herb trails. Since the ruins are still unexcavated we felt quite privileged to see a part of archeological history before much of the world even knows about it! The medicinal trail was equally as amazing, but it was Madeline who made it so interesting. With her knowledge we were able to observe and learn about several life-changing plants and how they can help us to better ourselves and our health. I have since adopted several of Madeline's dietary recommendations and feel better already! The family style sit-down dinner was not only delicious but very enjoyable. It gave us the opportunity to really chat with the other travelers and learn about their unique cultures. It also set the mood for the remainder of the night, which was spent with all of them. Together we enjoyed all of the activities LD has to offer. With darts, pool, music, movies, books, beer and, most importantly, good company we really could not have asked for anything more. Even the rainstorm didn't bother anyone. Knowing we planned to depart fairly early the next day Madeline had breakfast all ready. Another delicious meal under the belt before we drove all the way back to Guatemala.

Unfortunately, we only had 1 night at LD, but it was an amazing 1 night so i'm not complaining. Madeline and her family really put all of their efforts into making it the great place that Lower Dover is.

Room Tip: Seriously, you will be happy with any cabin you choose! They each have their own charm and are equal...

A great place to stay. Madeline and her son Justin could not have been more helpful and generous. They encouraged us to set up independent trips both to save money and to have a more meaningful experience. I cannot say enough good things about both of them!!

The lodge itself is a delightful experience. We started in the dorm because the cabanas were all booked the first night, but spent our entire time in the dorm because it was so much fun. We absolutely got along with all of our fellow travelers and new-found friends; so much so that we ended up doing most of our excursions together.

The property itself is an experience! Madeline gave all of us a very informative tour of the grounds, the native plants they have cultivated, and the Mayan ruins. Exploring the ruins was an experience not to be missed...it feels like you are an explorer discovering a previously unknown site.

The staff cooked excellent meals. If you go, be sure to have at least one dinner and one breakfast on site.

I cannot imagine a better place to stay in the Cayo district.

When I got home from Belize and told my friends I had cancelled my last 2 days at a nice beach resort to spend extra time in a bunkhouse at a lodge in the jungle, they thought I was a bit nuts. The fact is, though, that I can hardly imagine a place more relaxing than Lower Dover. If you're coming to Belize to spend all your nights raging in one of the small bars or the casino in San Ignacio, this place may not be the best for you (you can always get a cab here from San Ignacio at night, though). However, if you want to experience the real Belize - to be surrounded by the country's natural beauty; to have hosts who are incredibly friendly, knowledgeable and take pride in their facilities; to take the bus into town (Belize busses are so easy to maneuver); to see Mayan ruins in their "natural" state - and to experience all this in a community environment, where you can discuss your day's activities over a delicious family-style meal with other travellers and your hosts - then this is THE place for you. It's also unbeatable if you're doing the ATM tour (which you absolutely should) - it's the closest accomodation to the cave entrance, so you'll save at least 30 minutes of drive time in the morning and might get a deal from the tour agency you book with. Seriously, just stay here. It's unbeatable. You won't regret it.

A note from the owners: if you're going to arrive by bus after dark, bring along a flashlight for the shortish walk from the main road.

Lower Dover is truly a gem in mainland Belize. My girlfriend and I had such a great time. We spent 4 nights at Lower Dover and did a lot of amazing things located close to Lower Dover (ATM cave, San Ignacio, ruins, hiking, etc.). Lower Dover is located on an amazing piece of Jungle - the rooms were really nice, and the owners really take care of you. Madi cooked amazing meals and took care of all of our reservations for anything we wanted to do. The owners' son JB also showed us around the property - which included a couple of nature hikes, a tour by a shaman, farming, and even some jungle fishing. I would recommend this lodge to anyone visiting Belize, and I plan on returning sometime soon.

Spent three nights, very easy to base out of here. So much more relaxing, peaceful, and quiet versus other places closer to San Ignacio. Madeline goes above and beyond what is expected of a host. Her son Justin is also a trip and very helpful. Don't let the location dissuade you. Unless you want to spend a lot of money on a uber-posh eco-resort, then this is a great choice for a base to explore western Belize.
