“Loved it!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 2, 2013 via mobile

We stayed at Moonracer for 3 nights at the beginning of our trip to Belize. The property is beautiful and quiet. The lack of electricity is not an issue. There are very strong flashlights for the guests to use.

Marge and Tom were very helpful - they answered my questions via email prior to our arrival and suggested restaurants at our next destination. We left some credit cards behind and they went out of their way to return these to us while we were still in Belize.

The dining experience was fun and the food was great. The room was simple, spacious, and clean. It was exactly what we were looking for.

Marge and Tom were so helpful! They corresponded with us on a variety of topics before we arrived. They are a wealth of knowledge about what activities to do in the area. They are from the US and speak English which made it very easy to converse with them. My sister and I are still talking about how AMAZING the food was. We had chicken, mashed potatoes and veggies for dinner and it was some of the best food I've ever had! The coffee was so good that it inspired me to buy a french press myself! Our cabin was awesome... it didn't matter at all that there was no electricity. There was hot water showers which was great! Everything was clean and very well maintained. Marge and Tom are very dedicated and they made are stay wonderful!! I wish we could have stayed for longer!

We had a wonderful time touring the Pine Ridge and staying with Marge and Tom. It was easily the best part of our trip to Belize. It makes such a difference to feel so welcomed to a unfamiliar place and have 2 very personable and genuine people interested in making sure your stay is the best. Big Rock falls, Caracol, and the ATM were grand adventures!!

Initially, the draw of staying at Moonracer was the jungle setting, no electricity and homey atmosphere. While all of this added to our wonderful experience, Marge and Tom’s knowledge of the Cayo and the lodge’s coziness became the centerpieces of our stay.

They gave us several recommendations and advice that ended up being the true highlights of our trip, including hiking at Hidden Valley Inn and Chechem Ha. We may not have even tried those things had we not discussed it with Marge and Tom beforehand.

They were very helpful and genuinely tried to base their recommendations on what they knew about us. It was also clear that they knew all of the major players in the tourism industry and could point us in the right direction or give us tips on how to get the most out of our experience. This included recommending certain tour companies. This is worth it if you plan on being quite active in the Cayo, as we were, and strategically scheduling activities based on location and time is important.

Marge is a great cook, and dinners were very intimate. For the more active travelers, I’d recommend getting a packed lunch from her on the days you’ll be out exploring. They are pretty hearty and she packs an entire cooler for you, including a huge jug of water.

Breakfast was my favorite part. Marge’s fresh bread won me over the first day, and the grapefruit is the best I’ve ever tasted.

As for lodging, there is a wooden cabin split into two rooms. They supply some oil lanterns and a high-powered flashlight. The walls are very thin, so be advised you will hear the other guests if they make much noise. I’m pretty sure Marge and Tom said they can charge electronics in the main house during the day if you need. We didn’t end up needing to.

During the course of our trip, we visited several other lodges (Table Rock, Blancaneaux, Gaia) for dinner, drinks, etc., and while the other lodges are certainly luxurious and plenty comfortable, they lack the intimacy and free spirit of Moonracer.

Make sure you ask them to show you the gibnuts.

We stayed with Marge and Tom for four nights, and really enjoyed it. As everyone says the food is excellent, and they are eager to help you plan your trip. We had most of our activities planned when we got there, but we had most of one day free and their suggestions helped us have the most enjoyable and memorable day of our trip.

We visited four other jungle lodges (Blancaneaux, Hidden Valley, Gaia, and Table Rock) and as we left each, we both agreed that we were glad we chose Moonracer. Some people may be wary of the no electricity thing, but you won't notice. There are great lanterns in the room, flashlights, and there will be hot water. In fact, that was a feature for me when we booked, not a problem.

I also found the location to be very good. We were able to reach the Mtn. Pine Ridge activities with ease, and San Ignacio is not that far away. Driving on those roads will get old after several days, but it's worth it.

As MaryV says below, the walls are thin - you will hear anyone staying on the other side of the cabin. I personally didn't find it to be a problem because the other two couples that stayed in the room while we were there kept similar hours and were polite. I suspect that the travelers that stay at Moonracer are pretty similar, so I would expect that this is the typical experience. Other than that, I found the room and bed to be very comfortable and spacious.

If I went back to the Cayo I wouldn't even think twice about staying here again - we loved it.

We had such a great time with Tom and Marge. They helped us plan our whole trip and everything was so smooth and organized. The food was great and there was lots of it and the fresh squeezed orange juice and grapefruit every morning was so good. We spent three nights and every day we had an activity with transportation and guides lined up making everything very easy. They even helped us to plan a really nice dinner alone overlooking Rio on Pools. The only thing that wasn't perfect was that the walls between the rooms are thin and there was a large family next door making it a little noisy. The family style meals were fun and we enjoyed getting to know Tom and Marge and their dogs were a highlight of our trip. They were able to set up a last minute hike through Kaax' Tun and we had so much fun climbing vines and trees with Julio. We definitely recommend it for a very unique jungle experience.

We stayed at Moonracer farm for 3 nights on our honeymoon to Belize and it was one of the highlights of our trip! Marge and Tom were great hosts and Marge is a fantastic cook- all the meals are served 'family style' and were all delicious. She also did a great job of catering for my special dietary requirements (lactose/wheat free). It was a pleasure getting to know them both. We booked the Kax'tun jungle trek with them, which we highly recommend. We had a really knowledgeable guide who showed us all about the jungle and interesting flora and fauna, we explored caves and climbed up jungle vines, even doing some rock climbing up a limestone chimney, which felt like a great achievement! The next day we went out on a horse-riding tour, just the two of us and Joe our interesting, warm and knowledgeable guide. The mountain pine ridge and jungle are very interesting and we stopped off at Big Rock falls for a swim at lunchtime. The cabins at Moonracer are lovely and you feel like you are getting the real jungle experience, no electricity is actually a lot of fun and we loved the kerosene lamps and candles at night! We would love to come back some day.
