“Nice place, but hot and noisy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

You have to enter the hostel through the living room of the owner, which gives a safe feeling. The owners are very friendly people. The place is cheap, clean and you have your own little balcony. There's WIFI available. But the room and bathroom are really small. There's no guest kitchen available, but some nice restaurants close by. Very much noise from the street below early in the morning. It actually feels as if you're sleeping in the middle of the street. There was a road deviation at the time we were there, maybe that's why all traffic came through this street. The rooms tend to get very hot during the day and the ventilator gives only a little relief. In general we loved our stay here and spend almost a week at Hi-Et guesthouse.

We loved it here. We originally planned on just staying two nights and then trying another place, but we quickly changed out minds. The staff is awesome- especially the little old man who runs the place. They have a beautiful home that you walk through to get to the "hotel" portion, where you can get a room with 2 beds and your own bathroom for $10 (per person). There is a shared balcony on both ends of the hotel, and a shared kitchen which comes in handy! Free internet was also available. Highly recommend if you are staying in San Ignacio- Short walk to anywhere you need to go!

Room Tip: You can hear everything going on because the top of the walls are a type of lattice- FYI!

Stayed there on two occasions in March 2012. Owners were friendly. Rooms were clean with their own bathroom with shower. There was a veranda in the front and back to chill out and have some quiet time during the hot hours of the day. Ask for a room at the back to avoid the early morning traffic especially on Saturday mornings...it's market day in town. It is central to all restaurants.

Room Tip: Take the room at the back on the left for the most quiet room.

Stayed at this hostel on my way back through San Ignacio after a month in Guatemala.Owner is Junior, whose wife was away at the time, so maybe she is nicer and more intelligent than him. Initially Junior was merely abrupt and unfriendly but things degenerated rapidly.....when he discovered that 4 weeks before I had stayed at another hostel in San Ignacio which was unfortunately for me infested with huge bed bugs!
He was so paranoid that he assumed that 4 weeks later I was bringing them to his hotel and started yelling at me when I explained that firstly the other hostel was infested with them, I was merely the innocent victim and that it was impossible for me to be carrying them after 4 weeks at other hostels. I explained that being a zoologist, I understood the life cycle of these particular insects and politely suggested he could use the internet to get accurate and up to date information on the topic which he obviously needed. He really started yelling then and ordered me to leave thenext day. He is unfortunately a very unpleasant and ignorant little man!!!

We arrived in San Ignacio in March 2012 without a hotel reservation. We wanted to stay at Martha's, which is across the street from Hi-Et. However, when we travel, we are there to explore the area, not to sit in a hotel room. The Hi-Et was perfect for that. It isn't a hotel, but a guesthouse. The owners of the home were incredibly friendly, and they have transformed several areas of their home into guestrooms for travelers. We looked at one room, which was a room with a private bath for $25usd. However we decided on the room for $12.50usd. What a deal! There were four rooms that shared one bathroom. We stayed there for four nights, and they take cash only.
The room was very small, had a fan, and a private balcony. The walls between the rooms appeared to be plywood, and the wall at the front door to the rooms didn't go to the ceiling, but had about a foot of open lattice at the top. So you can hear your neighbors, and not the most private. The door locked from the inside with a slide latch lock, and from outside with a small padlock and a key. It may not sound secure, but again, this is someone's home, and the only people that come and go are the guests staying there. The owners are always there, usually in the living room which is where you enter the guesthouse.
Hi-Et has free wifi, towels, soap, and a great common balcony to watch the people below. The owners have an adorable friendly little dog who will sit with you on the balcony. It's centrally located to everything, and is quiet. Our room was cleaned daily, as was the shared bathroom.
This was a great budget place to stay in San Ignacio, with great, friendly owners. I would recommend staying here if you're looking for an inexpensive, basic place to stay in a central location with nice people.

A local suggested this place after over hearing us talk about staying at Martha's which is across the street. We were on a tight budget while in San Ignacio because we wanted to go on multiple excursions while in the area. This is a great, centrally located hotel for that. There are no frills here but if you just plan to sleep here after a long day of exploring, it is great for that. If you are a light sleeper then earplugs would be great for the morning time. The town wakes up about 6am, the rooms in the back are much quieter.

We travel to San Ignacio and chose this hostel by hazard we spend 2 nights there other than our room was in front of the building we could ear everything going on in the street until 0500am the place feels super safe and super warm maybe because of the fact that you have to walk across the owner's living room say hi to the family and then in the hallway to salut the parrot and then in the beautiful garden before getting to the hostel part of the house. I recommend this to anyone looking for a different experience and a good price.

Room Tip: ask for a room away from the front street noise
