Myself and a friend arrived in San Ignacio rather early in the day so the hotel we'd booked hadn't opened their office yet. Within minutes of exiting the taxi we were set upon by a stranger who told us the hotel would not be opening as they were out of business. He told us our best option was another place across the street where he'd be glad to take us. As neither of us had recently rolled off of a turnip truck we politely declined and waited just a few minutes until our hotel did indeed open for business.
The following day while waiting on the sidewalk the same stranger approached us again. He attempted to hawk us all manner of services and again we declined as we were already scheduled with a private guide. He told us the guide we'd hired was not going to show because he'd been arrested the night before on a DUI. Minutes later, our guide, a reputable and quality individual arrived to collect us.
Over the following days we were harangued and harassed by this same individual who we then learned is the owner of Mayawalk. We also learned this is his mode of operation and witnessed him pulling the same stunt on other travelers. At one point we saw him shadowing a group of young English backpackers who were clearly afraid of this character.
In spite of this aggressive and openly dishonest behavior my buddy and I offered a hand to Mr. Mayawalk when he had trouble with his truck. We helped some others push the vehicle out of traffic where it had died (what does that tell you about the quality of his equipment?). Not only did we not receive so much as a passing nod of thanks but the guy actually growled at us as though he was angry we'd touched his vehicle. Maybe he was just surprised when he realized some tourists who'd busted him out repeatedly lying were the guys on dead truck assist.
I won't offer the names of far superior outfitters here as that might appear to some individuals as motivation to slag this slime ball off. Instead let it suffice to say you're better spending your money with a reputable service and avoiding Mayawalk.
