“Dishonest as the day is long”

Myself and a friend arrived in San Ignacio rather early in the day so the hotel we'd booked hadn't opened their office yet. Within minutes of exiting the taxi we were set upon by a stranger who told us the hotel would not be opening as they were out of business. He told us our best option was another place across the street where he'd be glad to take us. As neither of us had recently rolled off of a turnip truck we politely declined and waited just a few minutes until our hotel did indeed open for business.

The following day while waiting on the sidewalk the same stranger approached us again. He attempted to hawk us all manner of services and again we declined as we were already scheduled with a private guide. He told us the guide we'd hired was not going to show because he'd been arrested the night before on a DUI. Minutes later, our guide, a reputable and quality individual arrived to collect us.

Over the following days we were harangued and harassed by this same individual who we then learned is the owner of Mayawalk. We also learned this is his mode of operation and witnessed him pulling the same stunt on other travelers. At one point we saw him shadowing a group of young English backpackers who were clearly afraid of this character.

In spite of this aggressive and openly dishonest behavior my buddy and I offered a hand to Mr. Mayawalk when he had trouble with his truck. We helped some others push the vehicle out of traffic where it had died (what does that tell you about the quality of his equipment?). Not only did we not receive so much as a passing nod of thanks but the guy actually growled at us as though he was angry we'd touched his vehicle. Maybe he was just surprised when he realized some tourists who'd busted him out repeatedly lying were the guys on dead truck assist.

I won't offer the names of far superior outfitters here as that might appear to some individuals as motivation to slag this slime ball off. Instead let it suffice to say you're better spending your money with a reputable service and avoiding Mayawalk.

“Kinda shady...”

When me and the friends traveling with me first got of the bus this older guy started following us down the street pressuring us to go to his tourist place. We went in and checked the prices but decided to shop around for out ATM tour. We walked across the street to check Flayvas and the old guy started yelling at us not to go there and started cursing. We ultimately decided to go with Flayvas and had a great time with Carlos in the cave. The guy from Maya Walk really creeped out me and my friends.

“Stay away from Mayawalk!!!”

San Ignacio is a beautiful town and I would recommend everyone plan for a few days there. There are some great tours and great guides but Mayawalk is not the place you will find this. When I arrived to San Ignacio it didn't take long before I was being chased by this old man that referred to to himself as Jimmy. He was very aggressive in his tactics and would not leave us alone. Once we finally got rid of him we checked into a hotel and went out to check out the town. It didn't take long before Jimmy was following us again, he started out friendly but before long he was using a very distasteful sales approach, he was bad talking all the other companies. I later found out a bit more about Mayawalk their history and the story behind this Jimmy guy. I am not going to stoop to his level and spread stories but just warn everybody that Jimmy will go to whatever extent it takes to make a sale. Even if it means spread malicious rumors about other people, and blatantly lie to people. Do not believe anything that Jimmy tells you, do your legwork and you will find that there are many very good very reputable companies in town.

“Professional”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 18, 2010

Took the ATM tour with Mayawalk. They have been the most professional tour that we have done in central America. Guides were excellent, full of good info, were ok admitting that they didn't know the answer to a question, and the office service courteous.

We did get to our destination in a beat up school bus, but that's par for western Belize.

“Bad experience with Mayawalk Tours”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 12, 2010

I booked 2 tours with Mayawalk Tours. I have no complaints about the tour guide/driver, but with the company's overbooking of the van. The van for our first tour can comfortably fit 8 passengers, but they booked 11 passengers. One person sat on the ground, and people sat uncomfortably, shoulder to shoulder, for the bumpy 2 hour ride. The van also broke down, and we had to wait an hour for another van to pick us up. I later complained to the Mayawalk manager and he said that the van should fit up to 11 passengers...but I asked whether that includes sitting on the ground. He had no response but agreed to refund my second tour scheduled the next day. I then booked this tour with another company. This other company was extremely professional and cared a lot more about the safety of their passengers.
