I visited the Belize Jungle Dome the last week of October ’08. It was the front end of my trip which also included stay on San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.
It’s a great place to stay and experience the Belizean Jungle while also enjoying some comforts. The staff is very friendly (including the two dogs Max and Phoebe) and takes care of all of your needs. The tour guides that they hire are well informed and do a first class job.
The shuttle driver, David, was waiting for me outside the airport when my flight arrived. We stopped at a small rustic roadside restaurant called “Amigos” on the way out. I recommend the Tilapia fish sandwich with a side of rice and beans. Very Tasty!
Karen, the general manager, greeted me upon arrival. I was escorted to Pool-Side Suite #2. It’s on the ground floor and just a few steps from the pool which I made great use of. The room has a separate living area with a small kitchen, bedroom with a king size bed, bath with one sink & walk-in shower and a very spacious walk-in closet. Rooms have ceiling fans and there is one air conditioner in the bedroom.
I only ate breakfast and dinner at the Jungle Dome. Lunch was provided by the tour guides each day. The evening meals are country style (beef, chicken, potatoes, vegetables, etc.). Breakfast included fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, pancakes, sausage, juice and various breads. There is a small bar on the second level with alcohol beverages (wine, beer, liquor, etc.).
The first tour was to the Mayan ruins in Tikal. A bumpy two hour ride along partially paved roads. But, definitely worth the effort! Not just to see the ruins, but to experience the everyday lifestyle of the Guatemalan people.
The second tour was the Black Hole Drop. It’s a one hour hike through the jungle. I would only recommend this tour if you are in reasonably good shape and do not have a fear of heights. Great Jungle Adventure!
The only regret is that I could not stay any longer!
