“Pook's Hill was a wonderful experience.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 5, 2006

My husband and I spent four nights at Pook's Hill and wished we'd planned a longer stay. It's in a beautiful setting where jungle, a lovely meadow and a mountain stream with a great swimming hole are all closeby. The birdwatching is phenomenal and their naturalist is exceptional. It was difficult to pick from the many half and full-day adventures offered and none that we chose disappointed. We stayed in one of the two new cabanas which are larger and surrounded by jungle and loved it. Meals were consistently good and the owners and staff were very friendly and always accomodating. We hope to go back in the near future.

I visited here for an afternoon, and even though I didn't stay the night, the place was so expectional that it warranted a review !

The location is great - away from everything, just inside the jungle, with a brilliant bar/viewing area for bird spotting, and watching the comings and goings on the local river. The thatched cottages were very pleasant, with a great supply of hot water to soak weary limbs and remove the grime of the jungle.

The owners Ray and Vicki were outstanding - Ray, his son and a number of others, trekked through the night from their Lodge to our jungle location to extract the group of stranded tourists which I was part of. After another five and a half hours trekking back, his wife couldn't have been more hospitable with their provision of showers, food and liquids to revive us after a difficult night.

So, if you are looking for a jungle lodge, look no further!

overall belize is lacking in the essentials that make up a good holiday. it is too commercial to have the charm of central/south america and not sufficiently developed to compete with it's caribbean neighbours. this place is run by a really nice couple who have tried to make the place something of a haven from the usual tourist poor quality rubbish. it is a very big place for bird watchers and surrounded by lovely woods. there is a great river for swimming and the communal night time food/drinks is actually ok - despite my initial reservations. the hightlight was the sighting of a mother and baby tapir in the woods (tho dont get too excited as we were told it was a rare occurence) and the presence of 2 impressive scorpions in the cabana in the dead of night. this place is quite lovely overall and i would recommend it much more that various other supposed hot spots of belize (manatee lodge and maruba resort included...). its a bit out of the way but we found some nice horse riding nearby and in a location so charming you might just be happy to sit and read and watch the wildlife.

My girlfriend and I loved this charming and rustic lodge situated on the border of the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve. The lodge, while simple, had an attention to detail that was very impressive. The proprietors, Vicky and Ray have obviously taken great pride in building a place that works with the surrounding forest, instead of against it. The cabanas were clean and comfortable, and could easily have won a design award, or appear in some style magazine. The pristine grounds are surrounded by dense sub-tropical forest, which has marked paths to a nearby river and swim hole. We were greeted in the morning by the calls of monkeys, and spectacular birds flying above us were the norm. The food was exceptional, and was the best we had Belize.

Pook's Hill is truly a world gem, and worth a trip to Belize in its own right.
