“A trip to remember”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2011

My husband and I spent five memorable days at Pook’s Hill Lodge, run by co-owner Vicki Snaddon, an Englishwoman born in Trinidad, her very capable managers, Cat(arina) and Dave, both Americans, and a friendly staff of local Belizeans. The lodge consists of a main structure that serves as dining room / veranda bar and lounge, adjacent to which are several thatch-roof sleeping cabanas built around the partially-restored ruins of an ancient Mayan settlement. The compound lies in the heart of a 300-acre forest reserve teeming with avian life, making it a magnet for bird-watching enthusiasts. It is also situated conveniently close to the cave known as Actun Tunichil Muknal (abbreviated to ATM), an important archaeological site containing Mayan pottery interspersed amongst curious rock formations and the calcified bones and skulls of sacrificial victims. Hector, a most knowledgeable and attentive guide, led us and a couple of fellow guests on an unforgettable all day tour up the nearby Roaring River and through the cave to view the artifacts. We unreservedly recommend Pook’s Hill to anyone with an interest in adventure, bird-watching, or simply relaxing amidst delightful surroundings.

I can't say enough about this place. First, my room in a thatched roof hut was so comfortable and I just loved waking up to the sound of birds in the morning. Second, the staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgable and really went out of their way to make my stay comfortable, even providing benadryl to bring down the swelling of all the itchy bug bites I got from my previous travels on the coast. Thank you Kat, Dave, Francisco and Mike! Third, the food is simple but absolutely delicious - thanks to the hard-working ladies in the kitchen. And last but not least, this is an incredible place for birdwatching. I really do hope to go back to pooks Hill someday and my only regret is that I couldn't stay longer than two days!

We selected Pook's because it was billed as an eco and adventure lodge located next to ATM. Our correspondence with Cat, the manager, in preparation for our trip was very helpful - however nothing prepared us for the amazing time we had in our 3 days at Pook's Hill. Our trip was delayed a day due to weather in the States and we arrived after dark after two long days of traveling. To get to Pook's we rented our own truck and relied on Cat's instructions to the lodge which is half an our off the Western Highway and rough bit of road. It was quite an advantage - and even more breath taking in the daylight.

As we arrived to the main lodge - other guest were gathered in the lodge for drinks prior to dinner. Dinner is served family - so it was like having our own welcoming party as we were greeted by everyone for dinner. Pook's wasn't full at the time and we were upgraded to the larger Bird House suite and not even charged for the night we missed due to weather delays (or the difference in rates). All of this was without our request. Cat also had rearranged our tour schedule so we could still see all of the sites in a condensed schedule. We highly recommend the Tikal and ATM tours!!

One thing we did not realize before arriving, is that Pook's employs their own staff of highly trained and entertaining guides. Most of the tours leave quite early in the morning (~7am) - however we quickly learned this was to our advantage. Not only does it tend to get a bit steamy in the afternoon, but we also missed all of the crowds and our groups were kept small (less than 6 per group). In the afternoon we enjoyed walks among the large lodge preserve and swimming in the river.

The property is absolutely breath taking. It feels like you have truly escaped the world of technology and corporate worries.

Pooks Hill Resort is a gorgeous place - the accommodation is comfortable and unique, the gardens surrounding the cabanas are perfectly kept and beautiful. In the main cabana, you can sit with a drink and relax, watching the hummingbirds zoom around, drinking sugar water from the feeders, then return to the trees, then as the sun sets the birds bed down and the bats take their place. Our transfers were perfect, great vehicles, Dennis took us to Belize Zoo on the way and gave us a guided tour which was a nice way to break up the drive. The food at the lodge was excellent quality and beautifully cooked and the company of fellow travellers was both entertaining and interesting. Cat and Dave are incredible, really genuine, kind and welcoming hosts, nothing was too much trouble and they went out of their way to make sure we were having a fabulous time. We went to the ATM Cave with Hector - as we hoped we were first into the cave (can't over estimate how important this is - we had the main chamber all to ourselves, it was quiet, we didn't have to rush, we could really take it all in). Hector was a fabulous guide, he gave us perfect instructions to ensure we were safe at all times, he's warm and open, a lot of fun to spend the day with. We also chose the overnight trip to Tikal, our guide was Mike - a real gentleman and awesome animal spotter, we told him we wanted monkeys and he found loads for us! We really enjoyed our two days with Mike - he's so easy going, he taught us a lot about Belize, he was so patient with us when we stayed to watch the Spider Monkeys until almost dark and then he got up early the next day with us to see Tikal in the early morning light. We could go on and on - but in short, everyone we met at Pooks was so kind and felt like friends, the accommodations were lovely, the location is excellent and we were so pleased that we chose to stay here. Highly recommended.

Excellent location for ATM caving! but the room was very small. We froze with just 2 thin blankets. Hate that the bathroom wall does not go to the ceiling and that there is no bathroom door. Felt like camping... not the best value... ATM caving was awesome!

We spent four nights at Pook's Hill and experienced a variety of situations where the staff (Cat, Dave, and Ray) went above and beyond to help make our visit unforgettable. The atmosphere, grounds, food, and comraderie were all outstanding.

Take the ATM cave tour while the cave is still open. I have speliological experience, and this spectacular Mayan ceremonial cave will surely be closed to visitors at some point.

We truly enjoyed our stay at Pook's Hill at the end of November. The place itself is lovely - the bar/lounge area is beautiful and welcoming, and the birdwalk cabanas are a must! The birdwalk cabanas are more secluded, apart from the rest of the resort, more in the jungle.
It is the staff, however, and the personalized service that really make this place special. From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed and at home. Cat and Dave are wonderful hosts, and we enjoyed the conversation with them and with Ray (the owner). Their guides (Mike and Francisco) are very knowledgable, we had Mike the whole time, we really enjoyed our day trips with him. My father was having some knee problems, and they went above and beyond to make sure that he was comfortable.
I highly recommend Pook's, you will enjoy!
