We wanted to visit Central America, chose Belize at random, and found Mopan River Resort online among several other lodges in Belize. We looked at all the possibilities and chose Mopan River
Resort based on the reviews we read. We thought we'd found a place that wasn't touristy, but a part of the real life of the country.

Little did we know we had found a rare gem, a meticulously constructed intimate place of almost perfect hospitality. The physical spot is 10 acres of lush tropical gardens separated from the small town of Benque Viejo del Carmen by the Mopan River, twelve gorgeous thatched cabanas with private verandas, each with a view of the river and each with polished hardwood floors and walls, vibrant colors, nice artwork.

The cabanas are private, modern and stylish, impeccably clean, air-conditioned, and with well stocked refrigerators. The resort is small, capacity of only 25 guests, but often has 12-18 guests at a time, which is part of the charm.

The place attracts travelers who are serious about their travel, interesting and congenial, who make fine travel companions. Each evening over dinner and delicious drinks, especially the Banana Velvets, we swapped stories and exchanged email addresses.

The 25-30 staff members (more staff than guests!) have been with the resort for years, are highly knowledgeable, competent, and friendly. The kitchen has been honored by Gourmet magazine. The kitchen staff takes classes in new cuisine, is adventurous and accomplished, and shines as they present a different international buffet each evening.

The gift shop prides itself on finding high quality local arts and crafts. There are carvings in hardwood and slate, textiles, lots of color and texture, even a Banana Velvet kit to take home!

The guides, especially Victor, are knowledgeable and fun companions. Each day's activity took us to an interesting adventure, a cave or a Mayan city or a botanical garden or a butterfly farm or a Mennonite community. White water kayaking on the Mopan, canoeing in the Barton Creek Cave, cave-tubing, ziplining at Jaguar Paw, finding the beautiful carvings of Jose Magana in Sa'k Tunich, San Antonio, each was exceptional. The Che Chem Hah cave tour showing 2300 year old Mayan pottery led by young Mayan farmer William was extraordinary, and usually available only to guests of Mopan River Resort.

We shopped at the San Ignacio market, the best in Belize, found carvings by Beto Mejia and CDs of wonderful Garifuna music of legends like Andy Palacio and Aurelio Martinez and Paul Nabor whose production studio Stonetree Records is just across the river in Benque Viejo del Carmen!

Our hosts are Kim and Ron Chysler from Edmonton, Alberta. They have taken the helm from Jay and Pam as of October, 2007.
The transition has been seamless as they've kept the staff virtually intact and have the same vision of providing their guests exceptional hospitality in a casual, friendly atmosphere.

They have recently purchased an additional 80 acres of surrounding forested land with the intention of establishing hiking trails, bird watching stations, possibly even their own zip line through the upper canopy ...all of which will add even more to the feeling of luxury and abundance.

The pool with its waterfall, the massage services, the 20 ft tall bird watching tower, the wedding chapel, the lush gardens with their coconut palms and banana trees, the little red boat that took us across the river each day to the waiting air-conditioned van...each part made the overall experience magical.

In our 40 years of travel all over the world, this place is the best single destination we've found. It has avoided any hint of being touristy, feels completely authentic to its location, pampers its guests with every pleasure, is commited to high levels of excellence in service. It provides an amazing array of activities each day, but is flexible in what it offers guests and can accommodate requests.

We discovered on arrival that TripAdvisor.com has ranked this all-inclusive resort as number 2 in the world based on the reports of its guests!

In addition to its high ranking, when we costed out the services provided, it is an astonishing bargain. You simply could not duplicate these services at its prices.

This is a place you must not miss.

“"The" Place to Stay in the Cayo District”

Mopan River Resort

Feb 24, 2008

My husband and I stayed here February 15th – 20th. This is “THE” place to stay. The grounds are beautiful, the cabanas comfortable and inviting, the food is excellent as is the service. We opted out of one of the tours and the owners arranged for us to go horse back riding instead; 3 hours for $35 U.S., we had a blast. The owners were very accommodating and helpful. The tours we went on were all great. I highly recommend this resort.

Belize: Mopan River Resort: absolutely wonderful!
Date: Jan. 19-25, 2008
Reviewer: a couple from Olympia, Washington, USA
We just found out that Mopan River Resort was voted by Trip Advisor as the Traveler's Choice Award best all-inclusive resort in the world...and justifiably! From the moment we reached the resort, we felt warmly welcomed as we were met by the owners, Kim and Ron. We were escorted to the lodge where the other guests were enjoying appetizers and drinks and introduced. Our luggage went to our room and we were encouraged to relax and dine before being shown to our rooms after dinner. The food was all gourmet and absolutely scrumptious, with a different theme each night. Every day we had the opportunity to be driven to a different attraction and often provided a guide. The tours we chose were: William's cave (amazing), cave innertubing (a real kick), Tikal (a must) the Belize Zoo (very well done) and river kayaking in front of the resort (fun). Rick got sick with the flu the day we were to be married so we missed out on that tour. Remarkably, after approaching Kim about his illness, she scurried around and rescheduled the entire wedding for the next day when he felt better. This involved calling both the photographer and videographer, obtaining a different musician, postponing the cake, and performing the ceremony herself (her very first). It was pulled off without a flaw and we had to do nothing but show up. That day the rest of the guests took a tour to a cave and the butterfly farm. The farm thought so highly of Mopan River Resort that they gave the guests a box of butterflies to present to us after our wedding. We were so surprised when we opened it and they flew out.
The rooms are very clean and cozy. The food is outstanding. The owners and staff are extremely pleasant and friendly. The grounds are well kept and beautiful. It truly was an ALL- inclusive as we paid nothing extra but entrance fees and that includes no tips. Our experience at Mopan was the most unique in all our travels and we can't say enough good about it.

    • Liked — The warm friendliness of the staff and the great help with the wedding.
    • Disliked — Long but unavoidable van drives to some of the activities.

We stayed four nights at Mopan River Resort. This place is fabulous. I wish we had planned to stay several more days. The jungle atmosphere is so relaxing. The excursions were well planned, with every detail covered. Ron and Kim were the perfect hosts, and the staff was top notch. I would go again, and again.

“Fabulous Mopan”

Mopan River Resort

This was a fabulous trip from day one. My husband and I and another couple were greeted by our driver just outside of the airport door as promised. The almost two hour drive was very pleasurable as he acted as a tour guide telling us about the countryside . The owners Kim and Ron greeted us at the boat ramp and accompanied us across the Mopan River. They guided us up to the Lodge and introduced us to the other guests . After a wonderful dinner Ron explained to us what we would be doing the next day. He told us how much money we would need , what we needed to bring , how to dress and what to expect to see . As the week went on it became apparent that we enjoyed being a part of such a relatively small group of people . We went on excursions together had happy hour together and ate together. We were of diverse backgrounds and nationalities and greatly enjoyed the company of the other guests.
The trips were strenuous but we are healthy 60 year olds and enjoyed them immensely . I would suggest bringing one pair of old clothes and shoes.
