I stayed at the Black Orchid Resort at the start and end of a two week cycling holiday. What a wonderful place. Large airy rooms with a large balcony. Bathrooms with good hot showers and with clean fluffy towels, replaced daily. There is also a laundry service. There is a pool and they have canoes that you can borrow a canoe on the adjacent river. Doug, Karen & all the staff were very friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. Convenient for Belize city (30 mins) and the airport (20 mins). A really good place to stay.

My friend and I stayed at the Black Orchid for one night in February. We read that it was a good alternative to staying overnight in Belize City, and it was FABULOUS.

Your room price includes complimentary airport pick-up, which is convenient. The grounds were beautiful - right on the Belize River (with free kayaks and canoes available to guests!), and there were lots of shady spots around to chill out/relax/read. The room itself was cute and very clean, with A/C and ceiling fans. The pool was nice in that heat as well.

The restaurant had pretty good food. I'm vegetarian, so I didn't get to try some of the 'specialties', but they had veggie burgers, beans and rice, salad, and a couple of other items available, so I was happy. Breakfast was delicious too - great fresh fruit.

I would definitely stay here again!

My wife and I stayed here for a night in January of 2008, and really enjoyed it. The resort is located on the Belize River in Burrell Boom, a small town about a 20 minute drive from the airport. Every part of our stay there was enjoyable - the facility is very nice, the staff was wonderful. Everyone was friendly and accomodating. The overall feel was very friendly and laid back. They arranged transportation from the airport for us, and it was very convenient. We had some rain while we were there, but were able to fit in a nice kayaking trip up the river, seeing (and listening to) howler monkeys, iguanas and various birds in the trees. The restaurant at the resort provided good food, with a fairly basic menu. The owner , Doug, is a great guy - very friendly. We would like to have stayed longer, and certainly will go back the next time we're in Belize.

At Black Orchid you'll be captivated by the feeling of remoteness, yet everything you need is right there - a riverfront dining room with delectable local and international food, a well-stocked bar, a beautiful, refreshing pool, and full use of the resort's canoes, kayaks and paddleboats. Engulfed in glorious vegetation (including many of Belize's hundreds of native orchid species) this resort is a peaceful and soothing retreat in the heart of one of the most picturesque parts of Belize! We went out on the river many times and rarely encountered another soul. This year was our second trip back and we now make it our main place to stay, as it allows us to unpack our bags and stay in one place while we branch out on excursions, all of which are close by, and many offered directly by the hotel.
Run over to the cays for a day and enjoy the island life then come back that night to your jungle retreat. Tour the ruins in Cayo another day or go to Gales Point and see the manatees or the Crooked Tree wildlife sanctuary on another jaunt! I like to stay right there at Black Orchid with binoculars and camera, watching howler monkeys (daily visitors!!), birds of all kinds, including huge flocks of parrots squawking overhead, fat, lazy iguanas sunbathing in the treetops...what can I say? You won't really want to leave unless you push yourself! Black Orchid's welcome is unparalleled, the staff are all very nice and helpful, and they will make sure you have everything you need. To top it off, you can even buy unique Belizean handicrafts to take home with you from the gift shop.
I have visited dozens of countries and been all over Belize, and this is the place we will come back to! Congratulations to Doug and Karen on creating something very unique and memorable!
