This was our first trip to Belize, and we had heard that the snorkeling was amazing. After our research we decided on booking Goff's Caye with Ecological Tours. The information we were forwarded said that we would meet at 9:00 am and depart at 9:30 - Belize time. We arrived right on schedule but when we were checking in were told to meet back in one hour. OK, so I shopped a bit and arrived back at the office and waited and waited. I know that the tenders were running slow, but I also felt like they were trying to sell more tours.
It was close to 11:00 when we finally loaded the boat and headed to Goff's Cay. We had actually passed this tint islet on our cruise ship. The boat trip took about 30 minutes. We pulled up to one of the most rickety docks I have ever seen. This is probably the reason Carnival no longer includes this tour. The cay is less than acres big and there is a porta potty on shore.
We took our stuff onto the cay, and over half returned to go snorkeling. There were many 1st time snorkelers and so we waited a bit more for their indoctrination. They have equipment including traditional lifesavers that are required. They demonstrated how to tie them around your waist so that you could actually snorkel. We had our own equipment with standard snorkel vests, so we were fine. Don gear and then jump off the side of the boat into the water. The water was pretty rough, and the group was divided into newbies and experienced snorkelers. With the heavy chop it was difficult for me to hear the guide. When I asked if we could just snorkel to shore, I was told that this was a tour, so we had to stay with our guide. The rough seas made that difficult. He did his best to keep us together and point out interesting stuff. The water was crystal clear despite the heavy chop. Early on we saw a sea turtle feeding on the bottom and an eel swimming out of his den! Way cool. The coral is also spectacular! While we were exploring the deep drop off, the other group had a connection with a manatee. That was exciting!
Back on shore there were picnic tables on the beach and plastic andirondack chairs you could rent for $5.00. Water, punch and rum punch were provided free. Chicken, lobster tails and hot dogs were being grilled for purchase. We bought some chicken with beans and rice, but it was only OK. The chicken was very dry and the beans and rice were cold. There is also someone there braiding hair and there were some items for purchase.
I have to say that Natalie and her staff were very conscientious and worked very hard to make sure we were all having a great time. The day would have been better if we could have departed sooner, and if the water had not been so rough. I would also like to see an option to snorkel from the beach. The dock condition will have to be addressed sooner rather than later. Still, with all that said, I recommend this tour and this company.
