My wife and I stayed for two nights. The hotel is an attractive colonial style building about 15 minutes walk from the town centre. We booked a standard room because we didn't want airconditioning. The room was quite spacious with simple furnishings, but it did have cable TV. Mattress on the double bed was okay, although the bedsheets were frayed and there was a small whole in plain view on the top sheet. They were obviously well used sheets. Similarly the bath towels were frayed. The bathroom itself was nothing modern but everything worked, including the hot water. The finishing standard of the room was poor - mold and what looked like dirt scuffs on the ceiling; dirt marks on the walls; and a piece of painted plaster about 1 foot square missing from the wall near the entry revealing the unpainted surface underneath.
Our room was located on the ground floor, which is where, I think, the standard rooms are. As you go higher the room prices increase by US$5 per level - patio rooms on the first level and balcony rooms on the top level. The rooms that I saw on other levels appeared to have a similar layout to ours but possibly better presented and, of course, higher up - there aren't any worthwhile views but there is probably a reasonable breeze.
Service was very ordinary. They certainly didn't try to make you feel as though you were doing them any favours staying in the hotel. One young man who was at reception at some stage totally missed out on getting social skills and should not be placed anywhere near reception.
The hotel only serves breakfast, so dinner becomes a bit problematic given the walking distance from the town. I went out one night at 7:00pm to have a look. Most shops are closed by 6:00pm, including some restaurants (obviously only open for lunch) and the streets seemed to be deserted except for small groups of young men gathered at some corners. I felt very uncomfortable, and decided to get some food from the supermarket and eat in our room rather than try to find a restaurant.
I wouldn't recommend Belize City at all, and the Hotel Mopan only if you can't find a better alternative.
