A unique experience, the animals are seperated only by heavy chicken wire. After an hour long trip from Belize City, you are guided thru this haven for these rescued animals. One word of advise, BRING INSECT SPAY ! This area is in an isolated area and tends to have plenty of insects, so beware in advance. It's worth the trip to see these animals in this unique setting. Although small, it takes about 2 hours to see it all.

Recently my friend and I spent a week moving around Belize. As a day trip from the dilapadated Belize City, it was worth it. Most cab drivers or tour operators offer tour for $75-$100 per person roundtrip (entry and ride). However I am no fool- my friend and I walked to the local bus station and paid $3 Belizean ($1.50 US ) for the 50 mile trek inland towards Belmopan- simply tell the drive to frop you off at the zoo. It is then only approx $8 US for entry into the zoo. Keep in mind we rode the bus with all locals and made a few quick stops- the bus gets crowded with locals and their goods, but really not a big deal. The zoo offered many exotic and indiginous species which were very interesting. The zoo was not crowded whatsoever, and the layout was nice as it was worked into the natural landscape. This is a very nice little zoo. It's definitely worth a few hours stop not only for a chance to see native animals from very close range, but also because they've done such a nice job creating a restful, interesting environment. One word of advice: don't try bus travel to and from the zoo. The bus drivers don't stop for you when you hail them. I waited 4 hours in front of the zoo, hailing bus after bus to get them to stop. In the end, I had to rely on the goodness of a local couple who had seen me waiting at the bus stop 2.5 hours earlier when they drove in. They took pity on me and drove me to Belmopan where I could make a bus connection to where I was going.

I've traveled back and forth to Belize every year for 25 years and knew this zoo when it was nothing but cages. Now a tourist can see healthy animals, birds,etc. in the natural habitat invironments provided for them. Nice walkways, clear information about the animals, shaded areas, a gift & snack shop, covered picnic area, outdoor bathrooms are clean. Easy to reach on Belize's excellent bus system. Well worth the trip.
