“Xunantunich Mayan Ruins - Breathtaking!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 24, 2013

Fabulous trip to the Xunantunich Mayan ruins site begins with a 2 hour bus ride from Belize City. As an excursion from RCL(Navigator) on Dec 5th, we had a great time despite the long bus ride there and back. We were hurried along throughout the tour, but not to a point that we didn't get to enjoy the site and see all that we wanted to see. The ruins were spectacular, even though I didn't get to climb to the top, my wife and friends had a great experience making the climb. The tour was exhausting, with plenty of walking to be done around the ruin site, but it was definitely worth it. A stop at a local restaurant for lunch was exceptional. Traditional rice and beans, slow roasted chicken and grilled plantains with a cold Belizian beer or two to wash it all down. Certainly one trip not to miss if you have the chance.

“Awesome spot!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 16, 2013

Xunantunich was very impressive and exhausting - and lots of fun! The monuments are huge and the grounds are expansive. It is very much everything you would want to see at a ruin site. There is a small museum you can go through at the beginning and then you can hire a guide or go on your own! You can climb up all the structures and their are paths and additional ruin areas in the surrounding forests. We also heard a howler monkey while we were there!

“The Mayan Ruins are impressive; skip the Botanical Gardens”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

This is one of the better Mayan Ruins to visit. It's fun to cross the river on the hand-cranked ferry. Once at the site, there is easy access to the ruins themselves. Our trip was enhanced by our knowledgeable guide. Quite a view from the top!
Had lunch at Benny's in the adjacent village. Great pibil (slow roasted pork) and Belizean beans and rice!
The Botanical Gardens was a waste of time and money! A Dutch family planted trees from elsewhere in the world, and introduced Belizeans to such fruits as lychee. Time will tell if these introduced trees turn out to be a huge pest and problem to the local ecology. We had heard there were a lot of orchids here. Well ... the majority of them bloom in the dry season - April & May. There were a lot of orchid plants, but only 3 of them were blooming. Overall a big disappointment!

“Very Impressive”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 9, 2013

My wife and I visited Xuxantunich for half a day with our guide, Luis (from Belize Nature Travel). First off, he's the best, so use his company as your guide. Although the site isn't huge, it is still very impressive. The tallest Mayan ruin really is magnificent. Standing up there with my wife and Luis was incredible. You can see the borders of Guatemala and far reaching Belize. Also, there aren't many Mayan sites where you can visibly see the hieroglyphics. It's very visible here! Depending on where you're coming from, it's something that you can easily do in half a day. We stayed at a hotel right down the street, so it was something that only took us three hours. If you're close by, definitely do Xuxantunich, but also pair it up with something else close by. We did Barton Creek Cave that morning. Xuxantunich is truly impressive!

“Just, WOW”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 7, 2013

We made the drive on the winding, somewhat scary highway from Belize City to San Ignacio, stopped in for lunch right outside the Xunantunich area, then made our way down the road to the bridge. You have to take a hand cranked ferry (with your car) across the river to the area. We tipped the operator. Also, we had a guy (in an official shirt) ask if we wanted to hire him as a guide, but we passed. After a few minutes drive we got to the ticket area, paid and began walking. The forest and trees around the area are beautiful. Very dense. We started picking up the pace to hurry and hike up to the area because it looked like rain.

Once you get to the main area, as you walk closer and closer, its is absolutely breathtaking. Climbing it was a bit scary as it is narrow in some places, but it was the most wild feeling walking around and through a monument that was created so long ago.

We saw several storms and rain forming all around so we hurried down (NOT a place to try to climb down during rain, I can see it becoming VERY dangerous.)

SO SO SO amazing.

On the drive out, we saw a HUGE iguana running down the road.
We stopped at the little vendor area/marketplace back on the other side of the river. Good prices, but they are very insistent that you shop THEIR stall.
