Dave and his guide Henry were amazing. They met us outside the Cruise Terminal and were extremely friendly and well-spoken. We rode through the city to the cave with Henry who has a huge wealth of knowledge on the history of Belize ans well as on the Flora and Fauna (as does Dave). We had two tweens and two teens with us and because it was school vacation, Dave's very charming children, ages 11 and 14, joined our group, which was an extra plus for my kids because they got to talk to someone their own age from the country. Also, I want to point out that Henry, who drove us through the country side to the caves, was an extremely SAFE driver - which really mattered to me.
Once at the river, we changed (do not wear flip flops, if you don't have water shoes or good water sandals, you can rent water shoes for about five dollars), picked up our tubes, and carried them through the jungle to the caves. (Henry carried the tubes for the 10-year olds, which was very helpful since while it is super easy for an adult to carry them, for a short kid, a little less so. On the way we waded through fresh spring rivers, walked under the canopied rainforest, and along the way, Dave told us about the flora we passed, the animals who lived there, and even had those braver among us taste termites - which, by the way, taste just like peppermint and will give you bragging rights. We also got to taste and smell many other types of plants - I never knew that allspice came from the jungle before.
The cave ride itself was glorious. Unlike the big tour groups, we just had 6 people in a group (we were 12 altogether, I think) and Dave hooked us together with ropes and then guided us. Floating through the cave was rather magical, and I won't spoil it for you by telling you all that we saw - I liked it being a surprise, personally. I will tell you that Dave gave us all helmets, unlike some other groups that not only had no helmets, but were only hooked together with their feet - which is certainly not safe for children.
The other commercial tours got out of the water right when the cave ended, but those of us with Dave and Henry swam in the beautiful river for a while before leaving.
After leaving, we all went out for lunch - I can't remember the name of the place, but it was very tasty and affordable.
On the way back, Henry told us a lot about the history of Belize (we wanted to know) - he is a very knowledgeable guy and a great story teller.
Oh- and both Dave and Henry were very aware of what time we needed to be back at the ship and took care of all of that for us, so we didn't even have to think about it. We got back to the cruise with no problem, no worries.
If you are in Belize city, whether on a cruise or just traveling around, I highly and without any reservations, recommend Dave, Henry and Cave Tubing R Us. They were both professional and extremely warm and friendly and accommodating.
