“Fantastic stay - Everything Was Great”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 23, 2013

We spent 4 nights at Howler Monkey, and from the moment Ed picked us up at the airport, everything was great. Ed, Mel, and the boys are wonderful hosts. They were friendly, knowledgeable, and made sure that we had everything that we needed.

Breakfast and dinner were delicious every day. You can't beat home cooking! Everything was always fresh, and it was great to try Belizian dishes. There is also an honour bar, with water, Belikin beer, juices and pop.

Our cabin was air conditioned, clean, and had a porch facing the river. There is a swing and a hammock for lounging. The room had two double beds, a full bathroom, and a loft that could have slept 2 or 3 more people. There was also an armoire with a small safe, which we used for passports.

The resort is located in a small village in the middle of a wildlife conservation area, and we were able to be up close with the Howler Monkeys in an area that the villagers have committed to maintaining as a protected zone. 3000 howler monkeys live in the area, and you can lay in your bed in your cabin and hear them howl. Very cool.

This year was our 6th year to stay at Howler Monkey.....Ed and Mel and the boys are gracious and wonderful hosts..the surroundings are beautiful.....the food is over the top! we've seen alot of Belize....Lamanaii, Xunantunich, San Pedro, Caye Caulker, the reef....Altun Ha, ATM Cave, Lubaantun, Punta Gorda....of all these places.....the back porch of cabin #8 is my favorite spot in Belize! Ed is an excellent guide in all things! Mel is just precious and does everything to make you feel like family....and the boys are both very helpful and great hosts themselves! We always look forward to our stay.....

Room Tip: The River Cabin is our favorite cabin but have stayed in the others as well....all are wonderful...

If you love nature, animals and great hospitality this is the place. The resort boasts rustic charm with a variety of unique cabins around the property. Breakfast and dinner are included in the rate and youll never finish it all because she gives you so much! Yum! The hosts are fantastic and the food is fresh and delicious. We were lucky enough to have the troop visit us and walk across the roof of our cabin. They also came out the morning we left, we felt like they were saying goodbye :-). If you're looking for a 5 Star all-inclusive this isn't for you. If you want to experience culture and a peaceful, serene setting, then consider visiting this resort. We will definitely be returning!!
There is another gentleman down the road from here, his name is Shane. He has a lovely spot and the monkeys come close and will eat out of your hand. There is also the Community Baboon Sanctuary right next store to the resort which includes a museum and they offer walking tours ($7 US) to see the troops nearby. The guide, Geraldine was very knowledgable about fauna and showed us many medicinal plants. It was great overall, really nice people in Belize :-)

We stayed at the Howler Monkey Lodge specifically to see the social interaction of the villagers and their protection of these monkeys. The food and facilities were adequate, this is a third world nation doing its best to bring tourist dollars into the area. You seem to be in the middle of nowhere, but you aren't, you can hear barking dogs and other things which seem out of place in the jungle until you realize people live here, in the jungle, with the monkeys. Its makes me feel good, as if they will protect the monkeys and keep them from being poached for food like is going on throughout Africa. The canoe trip down the river was wonderful and we got to meet the village people in their homes. A huge spider walked across the bedroom floor at night and my husband threw it outside. This is the jungle, not an inner city. Don't go there if you think you are at a Five Star Resort. Go there to experience something different and see/hear howler monkeys.

Room Tip: They're all good, you can really hear the monkeys howl, may keep you up at night, but that's...

We stayed in HMR for a night during our trip in Belize. To be honest, after having spent a week in a four star resort at the sea side, we were a bit apprehensive when we arrived to the "resort" but everything went ok and we were satisfied. I am not sure though whether we would like to spend there more than one night.

We were the only guests in the resort and the owners treated us well. They were very friendly. The food ( we had both dinner and breakfast) was excellent. Our kids are picky but they still dream about the chicken stew and banana with cinnamon we had there!

We had a river view hut which was nice although a bit dusty. There was hot water and air conditioner which was great. There were many many mosquitoes so bring your own repellant. During the night we also used electric one provided by the resort, which worked well.

There is a pool in the resort but it did not seem to be clean so we did not advise kids to use it.

You can borrow from the reception some games and books which came very handy for us.

We had a wonderful time at the Howler Monkey Resort. We saw a monkey just seconds after arriving at the lodge! Mel and Ed were so helpful and friendly. They gave us great advice and helped us book adventures, drew maps, educated us about Belize and answered all our questions. The room was clean and the food was fantastic! I've been trying to recreate some of the dishes but they're just not as good as Mel and Ed made them. I highly recommend staying here!

Room Tip: We loved the river view cabin. The hammock got lots of use!

The Howler Monkey Resort (HMR) was good enough to return a second time, which I did this week. After staying at the HMR on Monday night on my way to Punta Gorda, I booked another night for my return to Belize City the same week. If you are looking for a Hilton experience, look elsewhere. I am a Hilton Diamond member, and wish every one of my Hilton stays could be at the HMR. Mel and Ed are absolutely incredible hosts. The food is amazing, cooked fresh with local meats and vegetables. I am a hard-core birder and the surroundings and location adjacent to the river provided more than ample opportunities for excellent birding (Tityra, Trogons, Manakins, Parrots....just to name a few). Having howler monkeys come through the grounds early one morning just added to the overall "Belize" experience. Thank you for making my trip to Belize memorable. I will come back again!

Room Tip: I stayed in the river cabin, which had air conditioning. I would suggest one of the cabins with A/C...
