“Simple Elegance”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 3, 2009

Huracan….Some words in Spanish translate easily into other languages. But the powerfully devastating force of nature does not translated to the tiny resort on Long Caye of Lighthouse Reef.
Simple Elegance comes to mind while I write from my spot under the palapa at the end of the front dock. Frigates circle about, dip for fish & chase one another for squatter’s rights. Ospreys chitter. Pelicans and egrets transition from sculptures to hunters in the shallows.
Breezes gently rustle the palm fronds of my palapa . Water laps sporadically at the pilings.
Huracan is an ecological resort: clean, tidy and inviting. Each room has private bath with hot water shower and clean, odorless, flushing self-composting toilet. Ceiling & floor fans make sleeping comfortable. Windows are shuttered and screened and mosquito netting drapes around the bed. Linens are plush.
Sacrifices are minimal. Water & power conservation by everyone means that there will be adequate but not unlimited hot water for showers. Linens are not changed daily. Rooms are clean & fresh, Breakfasts are generous and varied. Dinners are tasty.
The diving expertise and new, high-end equipment they offer are surpassed only by conscientious & professional practices.
The owners, Ruth & Karel live by example: Use only what you need and take care of what you have. They welcome you into their home and trust that you will enjoy and appreciate this lovely place inhabited by a couple handfuls of lovely people and three crocodiles.
Thank you to Frenchie, for safe passage; Cereal for visits & coconut water; Leon for the guided tour and great stories; Darin for entertaining humor. Thank you, too: Ron, Linda and Jennifer. Thank you, to all of you, for sharing your bit of paradise with us.
Ruth & Karel, thank you for making your dream happen. Your Huracan is, indeed, a gentle, elegant place.

Karel and Ruth have created an amazing retreat in the middle of nowhere. They are truly warm, friendly, hospitable people and also their sense of humor can't be beat. Their dive shop is fully equipped and Karel is an incredible instructor and dive leader - my friends and I felt very safe with him and yet also that we were continually pushed to be better and more thoughtful divers. He and his crew have a great sense of humor, too. :)

The island is gorgeous and remote. Somehow Ruth manages to pull together a world-class menu daily despite the location and lack of resources. The hotel is clean and welcoming. We felt very much at home there and enjoying hanging out there and socializing.

If you want to dive the Blue Hole, stay here and do it this way. You will get two or more dives with a very small group and the very best dive instructor, instead of a 4-hour round trip on a giant rig with a ton of people and 8 minutes bottom time.

How can I describe the Huracan Diving without using clichés and kitsch? Not possible. Huracan Diving is the best place to go if you are looking for the perfect dive holiday in a remote place.
The small B&B - situated on Long Caye at Lighthouse Reef - is run by the Belgium couple Ruth and Karel who make you feel at home from the first moment. Karel is a passionate Dive Instructor who will take you on great deep dives through the mystic stalactites of the Blue Hole, but will also show you beautiful corals and fish on some of the other breathtaking dive sites. Ruth keeps the whole place tidy and fulfils all your wishes, if it´s a bike-trip around the small island or just a cold Belikin-Beer in the evening. And you have to try her shrimps in coconut-sauce - excellent!
Frenchy, boatman and Divemaster, brings you to the best dive-sites and after promising us dolphins on our way back to Belize City he kept his promise: a big school of dolphins played with us and the boat, an experience I’ll never forget.
Writing for a travel-magazine and travelling with my sister who owes a travel agency we’ve seen a lot of beautiful places, and we definitely agree: Huracan Diving is one of the best, if you want to spend some time far away from crowded beaches and mass tourism.

Ruth and Karel have created quite a special place. Our main goal was to dive in the wonderland that is Belize and we were not disappointed. Karel is flexible, considerate and a responsible divemaster. He spent a lot of time before the dives telling us what we would see at all the sites, prepping us for the more technical Blue Hole dives and asking us what we wanted to experience. Karel takes the ubiquitous Caribbean "no worries" to heart and his relaxed attitude is contagious. Ruth runs the B&B and is gracious, accommodating and strives to make one's stay as relaxing as possible. The B&B was renovated in 2008 and is modern and clean. What makes this much more than a place to stay, however, is Ruth and Karel's hospitality. They treated us not as guests but as friends, eating meals with us, drinking a glass of wine with us in the evening and engaging us in interesting discussions. Ruth & Karel's place is off the beaten path but it's well worth the journey.

Karel and Ruth are great people and really care about thier guests. They both went above and beyond to make us happy and comfortable. We even hinted about having a fire on the beach which we received our last night there and oohhh those smores. Karel is a great diving guide and really knows what he is doing. The B & B on Long Caye was an excellent base for diving as many great diving locations are only minutes away. We dove Long Caye, Hat Caye, Halfmoon Caye and the famous Blue Hole. We even spotted a seldom seen gold spotted Moray Eel. Ruth is a great cook and kept the lodge spotless which is tough in this sandy island envirement. We wished she could dive with us but the B & B was full most of the time and she was always busy. The lodge itself is not huge but there is enough room for all the guests to relax talk or stretch out without bothering anyone. It is an intmate and cozy place to stay and the beds are so comfy.

Lets not forget about Frenchy, he was a great boat captain and sometimes divemaster when needed...great guy as well who often turned the boat around for dolphin, turtles or other ocean life he spotted in the clear blue-green waters.

You virtually have the island to yourself so dont come here if you like crowded noisy tourist traps. Dont come here if you are looking for a ton of restaurants and bars as there is only one place here for that....Huracan Diving B & B!!

We already miss it and hope to see Karel and Ruth soon. Thanks again to both of you for making our trip so special.

We were sailing from Belize to Guatemala in a large group coming from Italy. Lots of us had no phone contact home for days. We approached Long Caye, Karel and Ruth were so kind to let us call home via skype. What a surprise to discover an island with this small gem on it! If you search for holidays in "contact with nature" this is a place to go. The facilities are charming, simple and clean - you can feel that Karel and Ruth build up this place with passion. Diving was great with Karel! Some of us had to hire the diving equipment: it was brand new or perfectly maintained!!

Stay here. Me and my fiance and four other friends found this gem and can't wait to visit again! The location was wonderful - far enough from the mainland that the reefs were still truly spectacular for snorkeling and diving. We practically had the island to ourselves. It was well worth the 2 hour ride out. The hosts were wonderful - Ruth and Karel met our every need before we needed it. They are awesome individuals. The food was wonderful - it was a nice break from traditional Belizian fare to eat Ruth and Karel's more Belgian influenced dishes. The lodge and netted deck were immaculate. You can see and feel all of the care that goes into this place and it will make your visit truly memorable.
