“A week in paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2008

We stayed at Jim and Kendra's "Off the Wall" resort on Long Caye in May 2008 for our honeymoon and had a great time!

After an initial search for different resorts in the area, we finally settled on "Off the Wall". We decided to stay away from "Glover's Atoll Resort" (on Northeast Caye) after reading a few reviews (Jim and Kendra later shared stories about this neighbouring island that seemed to be consistent with the reviews).

The island is a little remote (~ 1 hr somewhat choppy boat ride). But the distance is totally worth it when you arrive at the island. Paradise - sandy beach, coconut trees, and warm, crystal clear turquoise water. All just for us.

The facilities there are basic but very clean, and well kept. The cabins are private and secluded from each other. The cabins include: a bed with mosquito net, windows with shutters (no screens), lots of books, a solar powered lamp, candles, and a porch where we spent a lot of time reading and hanging out. The view out the front porch is phenomenal - you have your own little private beach in front of the ocean. We considered it our own little ocean-front property.

The shared composting toilets are clean. There are three showers supplied by rainwater or well water (it hadn't rained there in a while so it was brackish well water for us). Kendra's also done a lot to personalize the resort with crafty lanterns, and colourful tile mosaics.

You can pretty much do what you want for the week. Each morning you plan out your day with Jim/Kendra (whether you want to dive, if you want to

go snorkeling, kayaking, or fishing). Most of the time we just winged it and sometimes changed our minds.

The dive centre is stocked with well-kept equipment. Their instructors and dive masters are careful and a lot of fun too (we had Lucky and Ralph - both great guys). In fact, all of the staff there is super friendly and very laid back. And the diving there is superb! All dive sites were within a 10 minute boat ride. We saw turtles, nurse sharks, lobsters, octopus, and even flying fish and dolphins on our boat rides.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served at regular intervals (they blow a conch horn to notify the guests) and the food is awesome. It's all served family (buffet) style so you can eat as little or as much as you want. Annette was our cook that week and she served a variety of meals and desserts too. They kept us very well fed for the entire trip.

Last but not least, Kendra and Jim are the best! Kendra is super nice and sweet. Jim is a little quirky in a fun way. They make a great pair to hang out with. The resort is essentially their home which they open up to host guests. They are so warm and welcoming and take very good care of you. You will feel much at home when you stay with them.

  • Liked — ocean, views, activities (diving and snorkeling) and owners/staff
  • Disliked — Due to high fuel costs, your trip stay is set from Sat. to Sat (one week intervals, unless you charter a boat)

We stayed at the Slickrock Resort next door as part of a tour but took Scuba lessons to include PADI certification from the instructors at Off the Wall Dive Center. They are great instructors and coaches -- knowledgable, competent, supportive, and patient. I thoroughly enjoyed the process. The diving locations are excellent and varied. I highly recommend their dive school. Also, the guests I spoke with who were staying there were very pleased with their lodgings and meals.

Jim and Kendra Schofield have created a small 9-visitor dive resort in the middle of a protected Caribbean marine reserve, on a private island of 16 acres, part of the country of Belize in Central America. Being protected, the marine reserve is off-limits to commercial fishermen and cruise ships (hooray!). The reserve is located on Glover's Reef, which is--apart from the Maldives in the Indian Ocean--the best diving we have ever experienced. Having spent most of their lives on Long Caye ("Long Key"), the Schofields and their staff of PADI-certified divemasters know the reef like the backs of their hands. Being remote, there are not that many divers. For our book, this is the best Caribbean center we have visited.

The site ambience is truly laid-back and relaxed. If you are a PADI certified Advanced Open Water diver, you will experience great dives, no pressure, and truly experienced divemaster guides.

Off the Wall is most suitable for couples and families with children over 12 who are used to camping-style settings. (Sometimes children aged 10 to 12 can do the PADI Introduction to diving course.) Why camping-style? The resort is ecologically sound: Insofar as possible, Jim and Kendra use solar power, and a compostable toilet (no, it does not smell bad; it is not an Army latrine). There are three showers, all of which use rainwater heated by the sun. Meals are in a group setting, with Jim, Kendra, and the staff.

There are no TV's, bars, or other distractions. This is why it is so good for families. One can get to know one's children by playing card or board games with them after sunset.

This is a rare, precious, Mom-and-Pop dive center. You will not find this kind of resort elsewhere. The Schofields are genuine, authentic, positive, modest, knowledgeable, and kind persons. Also, one has to note their courage: they built this resort following the devastating Hurricane Mitch that wiped out the island's structures (along with huge swaths of Honduras and Belize). The landscaping is carefully thought through and implemented, and the Schofields had to put their backs to the wheel to make all this happen.

Other notes: (1) Bring the strongest insect repellent available. (2) Bring After-Bite and Calamine lotion if you are particularly sensitive to insect bites. (3) Jim and Kendra have an excellent list of materials to bring with you, including flashlights, batteries, etc.

Getting to and from: This is a three-step trip: (1) from your town to a hub that handles flights to Belize City; (2) from Belize City to Dandriga via a small prop plane on Maya Airlines; and (3) from Dandriga to the resort via boat. Usual guest changovers occur on Saturday boat trips (which also double as provisioning trips for the resort); any day other than that requires a $300 additional boat charter.
