“Quiet and relaxed”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2011

We spent the last two nights of our honeymoon here. It was the perfect place to wind down a two+ week trip. Louise, the owner is very friendly and sweet. The free bikes were an added bonus. We stayed in the private cabana, which was spacious, very clean and updated - tile floors, air con and a mini refrigerator. The cabana has a great porch with chairs and a hammock - perfect for reading or sipping a glass of wine. Maxhapan is located off the beaten path, so it's pretty quiet. The grounds are very clean and safe.

I've traveled a lot for my 24 years, and I have to say that I've never felt as cared about in a hotel before. Mind you, I realize that it's more like a bed and breakfast than a hotel, but I'm including all sorts of vacation accommodations in this.

Louise took excellent care of us. She cleaned our rooms every single day, made sure to bring us liters of water, and gave us valuable advice. We lived by her recommendations, and I happen to believe her guidance was the reason that we not only enjoyed ourselves, but also didn't have any bad experiences whatsoever. She told us where to eat and where to worry about, and she told us the pros and cons of the various snorkeling and diving operations. She truly knows her home, and you can tell that she's interested in making sure that you enjoy it as much as she does.

Our room was wonderful. We were on the second floor of the two-leveled cabana, and we absolutely loved it. It's beautiful and relaxing at night, and we have all the modern amenities to make our stay comfy. In fact, after we managed to burn ourselves to a crisp, we spent several hours one morning lounging around in the A/C, watching cable. Maybe not what we came to do, but it was an option we gladly took advantage of when it was needed. Another fantastic option that Louise provides is the ability to rent a bike to ride around the island. They're very helpful, especially when you're planning on that day to explore.

No, it's not on the shore (there's not really a beach so much on Caye Caulker), but I feel that it's actually a better place to relax, away from all the buzz. And the island is so small that it's easy to get down to the shore and find a pier to swim off of any time that you want.

One thing that I actually liked because it made me feel safe (but that everyone should be aware of, regardless of opinion) is that people who are not registered guests are not allowed in the rooms. Louise has an outdoor entertaining area complete with lounge chairs, a table, and a bar that you can use to spend time with anyone. If this puts a cramp in your style, sorry! But I totally respect and appreciate her policy.

I can't imagine staying anywhere else, because it would be a completely different experience - and I absolutely loved my own!

Room Tip: Ask Louise if the second level is available for your stay - we loved the breeze and the view!

Caye Caulker is an ideal vacation spot, but one of the best parts of our trip was getting to come home to clean and cozy Maxhapan. We stayed here for less than a week, also stayed at Leeside on the island, and the vibe of Maxhapan was just better - secure, grounds well cared for, and Louise, who on more than one occasion helped me to get into vacation mode with her relaxed and calming attitude. Administratively, all transactions were speedy and transparent, definitely a wonderful deal.

I stayed at Maxhapan and loved the room, the location was off the beach but Caye Caulker is tiny so didn't make a difference. There are free bikes to hire if you don't want to walk. It's run by Louise and her husband. She is absolutely lovely, like a second mum! The rooms were spotless too, cleaned every day. I would definitely stay here again!

We stayed here for almost a week in July and we were sad to leave. First—the price was amazingly cheap. We stayed in the upper cabana, which was quiet and peaceful with a beautiful view of the tops of the palm trees. The hammock was comfortable and the room was huge. It came with 2 beds, a coffee maker, a TV, A/C and a fridge that came with fresh water everyday. There are free bicycles to use everyday, which let us bike all around the island and to the beach. The grounds are very clean and filled with cool little sets of tables and chairs to hang out in. There are also trees from all over the world in her yard! The best part of this place was the owner Louise. She was so sweet and wonderful. We mentioned that we loved beer and she put a few in our fridge! She cleaned our rooms so well everyday. She let us take some of her maxapans when we left. It was nice to see her smiling face everyday. Thank you Louise!!! I can’t wait to go back to Caye Caulker and visit Maxhapan Cabanas again!

Louise is amazing...and so are her three cabins. We stayed here in 2008 and now in 2011 and loved it both times. You will NEVER have budget accommodation cleaned so completely.

The prices are more than reasonable and she seems 100% booked all the time so get you reservation in early.

The cabanas are very nice and they are very clean. We had a very good time there. The owner, Louise, makes you feel like at home. She is very kind.

There are some bikes that you can use with any extra cost.

We had a really good time there. I would recommended it for sure!
