Do not get a room on the bottom level (no breeze, very loud with drunks, early SCUBA risers and employees above you). Rooms are dirty (dead bugs stuck to curtains, trash from previous tenants, melted TVs) and maids only stop by to give you towels when you let the front desk know. While it's tough to find better accommodations on the Caye in terms of quality and price, the Tropics is not worth the USD$30 a night. Try Romie's about 5 buildings north past the Rainbow.

First there is no fresh water there. Second the room are dirty, and the staff is not professional and not friendly.
I will stop here because I only have bad things to say about this place...

The Tropics Hotel is not a Backpacker hotel...With exception to a few rooms on the 1st floor, The Tropics is just a dump...It is dirty, It has ripped stained sheets, and no bed covers. The ceiling is falling down, the floor is...I do not know what....And the bathrooms are in an unspeakable condition... There are far better places on Caye Caulker for the money

The beds and pillows were more mold than cloth - the only clean thing about this place were the towels. I wouldn't be so upset if this hotel were touted as a hostel for $10-20/night, but at $55/night for a room that is far below my Peace Corps living standards from a few years ago, I was horrified. I tried to change the room, but the staff could not be bothered since, unfortunately, I had prepaid before arrival. (The result of someone telling me that Caye Caulker is packed at Christmas.) My mistake - I'll never do that again. Overall, I found that when I tried to get better quality service in Belize and was even willing to pay for it, there was none to be found, unlike its neighbors of Guatemala or Honduras. Caye Caulker itself is beautiful though, and very laid back.
