We stumbled onto Tropics after getting off the Triple J boat at their dock (not the other dock at the end of the beach, which is more popular). We asked how much the room was and she said $20. After spending more than we would have liked at Tikal, we were willing to sacrifice quality for price. We checked out the room to make sure it was alright. There were 2 beds, a bathroom with a huge shower, and a fan. We decided to take it, since we weren't spending much time in the room anyway.
It worked out fine for what we paid. We were on the second floor and had a nice view of the ocean. It didn't seem to be very busy, possibly because it was low season, so there weren't many guests to make noise. One of the bars did play loud music into the night, but we had earplugs, so it was fine. The fan worked fine as well.
We found the staff very helpful, giving us access to our safety deposit bags several times a day, and selling us really cheap beer and water. The guy in the scuba shop let us borrow snorkelling equipment for free, so we could go to The Split.
Had we spent much more than $20 (like $30) I would have been less impressed, but I was quite impressed with the value.
