I would have no hesitation in recommending White Sands Cove to anyone looking for a relaxing vacation on Caye Ambergris, Belize. The only reason I give the property four stars instead of five is the lack of a full restaurant on site (they have bar service with ceviches and bar food-intermittently open).
ARRIVAL: Like most or all of the nice resorts on the Caye, White Sands arranges transportation for you from the dock or air strip (for a fee) and provides you with a welcome cocktail upon arrival. The driver will stop anywhere you want on the way to the property, including the grocery store to stock up on rum, beer, fruit, bread, etc. We particularly enjoyed the service and company of bartender Doris and her pleasantly sarcastic brand of humor. The extremely accommodating staff will take your luggage to your room and even put your groceries in the fridge for you.
ROOM: It's more an apartment than a room, you get a bedroom with strong air conditioning and comfortable bed, a bathroom with a good shower, plenty of hot water and water pressure, and a kitchenette/breakfast nook with a futon, table and chairs, sink, fridge, oven, range top, cabinets, toaster, pots/pans, cups, silverware, etc. You also get a large porch and lounge chairs. Very comfortable, homey, and clean. We had a poolside room which had very nice views of the ocean and was just a couple steps to the pool. Beach front rooms have a slightly better ocean view, but not enough to justify paying more for them. Garden view rooms though didn't have as nice a view as the pool side.
SERVICE: Outstanding. Marlon manages the place in a laid back, friendly, style and he clearly works very hard to keep the place running and all the guests happy. He even did a couple loads of laundry for us (for a small fee) to wash the jungle out of our clothes from our trip to the Cayo district. Room was cleaned daily. Grounds are immaculate. Pool cleaned daily by the also very friendly and enjoyable Louis. He'll show you how to line fish off the pier if you'd like. Great service.
TOURS: There is a dive shop on the premises, and they were great. Took us snorkling to Mexico Rocks and Hol Chan/Shark Alley (Hol Chan is better than Mexico Rocks) and took other guests scuba diving. Easy, fair prices, and no problem with short notice reservations. Guides (Junior and Yemin) were fun, knowledgeable and helpful.
FOOD: Only real negative here is the food. The ceviches and other bar food (think french fries and fish and chips) were good as far as that goes, but no real dining option on site and the bar is only open when enough people are around to justify it being open, never for breakfast. You're a bit isolated in the North end of the caye for eating options, only a handful of places are within a short walk. Otherwise you need to bike into town (about 3 miles-free bikes from the resort) or pay for a water ferry into town. That said, Aji and Capricorn nearby were delicious, but expensive. The Yoga Bar had reasonably priced, good breakfasts. I recommend doing some grocery shopping for breakfast food/snacks and eating in your kitchenette some days.
BEACH: No swimmable beaches in this part of Belize due to the mangroves and sea grass, but you can sit on your porch, on a hammock, a lounge chair, or the end of the pier and gaze into the turquoise sea for hours. Free kayak available to make the 30 minute paddle out to the reef for some on your own snorkeling, worth doing for the tropical fish, but a workout to paddle back. Most of your swimming will be in the very nice pool.
DOGS: If you like dogs, the resort has its own, Riley who is mellow and will greet you when you arrive. Two little, black dogs "Chico" and "Chica" from next door are always present and will be your cute friends if you let them, they'll ignore you if you don't want them around. They were fun.
OVERALL: Great property, great service, would go back and recommend to all of you.
Pool side rooms have just as good a view as beachfront for less money.
Buy some breakfast food/snac...
