“Great Getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2013

This place is so cute. My husband and I stayed here when we were dating. It is perfectly located right in front of the scuba shop. Belizean Shores has a fully equipped kitchen. I recommend that you stop at the grocery store in town and stock up for breakfast and lunch. Ambergris Caye is a quaint town so don't expect a huge party.

The diving is amazing in Belize!

*Note...you have to take a motorboat to get to most places on Ambergris Caye.

It was my first time to Belize and I had no idea what to expect. We arived by a complimentry boat ride in from Tropic Air to Belizian Shores Resort. We had a rum punch waiting for us as soon as we docked and were walked through the basic lay out of the resort. Amazingly beatutiful. Landscape is very tasteful and well maintained. They let you get cozy in your room before you are checked in. Nice touch. This continues with wonderful service from the entire crew from the from desk help to the bartender William. He was very helpful to offer suggestions about restaurants to tours. He's a great resource. We rented golf carts from the resort and you do not have to tell them how long you are going to be gone. Again nice touch when you are on vacation. I do not want to be watching the clock. They just charge you for the time you use it. We had a wonderful week getting to know the San Pedro area and ended the week with a trip on a catamaran tour with Tuff E Nuff. James was an awesome tour guide through the snorkeling tour. Just a wonderful day on the water. I loved this trip!!!! I Highly recommend this place.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2013

My husband, two kids (6 & 8 yrs) stayed here for 7 nights at the end of April 2013.

Condo: We stayed in 3D - an upper unit. It was decent but somewhat worn. We enjoyed the privacy of our own deck, although our relaxation periods out there were often cut short due to the noise of electric tools being used to renovate the condo next door. As for the kitchen, there was only the basics - no blender and the element on the stove didn't work.

Food: We ordered groceries from Grande Mata so we had food when we arrived. The value was average for what we paid (eg. I ordered fresh fruit - oranges, pineapple and papaya which were all so green that when we left a week later they still weren't ripe). It was nice to have a fridge full of cold beer when we got there though!

We also ate evening meals at the hotel restaurant twice. The food was pricey for what you got and although the service was great, I would recommend eating elsewhere if you have the choice.

Excursions: We only did one half day trip to Mexico Rocks - it was good and the price was decent. We had the guide to ourselves and in addition to many varieties of fish, we also saw quite a few nurse sharks, dolphins and sting rays.

We also took a kayak out to the reef to snorkel by ourselves a couple of times, which was a lot of fun. One day we rented a golf cart to go in to San Pedro, which was a fun adventure for both us and the kids!

Pool: The pool is definitely the best feature of the resort and we spent a lot of time playing there. We did have drinks at the swim up bar a couple of times, though we found it pricey. It was just as easy (and more affordable) to make your own drinks in plastic cups and bring them down with you.

Service: The staff were all very friendly, though the front desk staff often seemed confused at any questions or requests I directed their way. I usually just looked for Marianne as she was very knowledgable and friendly.

My fiance and I stayed at the Belizean Shores Resort 4/13-4/20 2013. We must say that we were pleasantly surprised at the location of our condo. We stayed in building 3 and it looks as though all of the rooms have somewhat of an ocean view. We were greeted by Mariannne, who was excellent! SInce the resort is on the smaller end, we feel that we had exceptional customer service the entire week! It was nice to have stocked coffee and fresh water when we arrived as well. The pool was very clean and the swim up bar was great. My fiance, really enjoyed the bartender, Michael. He was very entertaining! My only complaint would be the sound of the A/C kicking on and off woke me . However, I'd rather be in a cool room than sweating from the heat. Def. rec. renting bikes and biking into town and stopping on the way to the Palaypa Bar. The locals are very friendly and helpful too.

The hotel is more then we expected! The upper villa room was very roomy an well worth the money. Hotel staff very friendly made you feel right at home. Knew us all by name. Michael at the bar was great ! Kudos to him. The rental of the golf carts very inexpensive $55 US dollars for 8 hrs pretty good. Well worth the trip to the city for great pizza lol.. As for the restaurant in the hotel.. I could live without eating the food. Not that great in my opinion and well over priced!! Burger was horrible, the chicken okay.. And $2.50 US for a single pancake ?? Really..?? Insane! Might as well just rent a cart and go into town.. Don't waste money on the restaurant. There are plenty more on the strip of the beach.

We loved our stay at Belizean Shores. The condo has plenty of space, and you can stop by the covenience store at Captain Morgan's Retreat to buy refreshments and snacks to stock your fridge with. It's only a 10 min walk from the resort. They have all the kitchen appliances you would need. The pool was relaxing and the beach is good for just wading - too much sea grass to swim. We saw huge moray eels off of the dock. Snorkel trip to Hol Chan with Tuff-E-Nuff was awesome - saw dolphins, spotted eagle rays, sting rays, loads of colorful fish and sea turtles. We ate at some great restaurants in town - Estele's on the beach for breakfast - don't miss it, and Blue Water Grill for dinner, they have sushi specials on Tuesdays and Thursdays - perfect to watch the scenery, enjoy a cocktail and some sushi. Great place to stay!

The hotel/resort is beautiful. The rooms are HUGE, heavily air-conditioned, and well-stocked (full kitchen, lots of toiletries, lots of towels). The pool is also actually really nice with plenty of places and chairs to lay out. But the island itself is awful. Like a Central American and much smaller version of Rosarito, Mexico: dirty, gritty, full of trashy tourists looking for the next $2 beer. There is no soul or character to San Pedro, so predictably it attracts tourists who could care less about the culture and history of Belize. Coming from NYC, I laughed when I heard other hotel guests complain about having to take a water taxi to town: "Ugh, feels like waiting for public transportation. You must be used to this in NY!". Yuck! Not my kind of tourists; not my kind of place. It's a pity to see another beautiful tropical paradise cheapened by mass tourism. Go to Caye Caulker instead, if you must go to an island in Belize. Otherwise, just stay in Cayo or elsewhere on the mainland.
