My husband and I stayed here for one night based on reviews here on TA. Many of the reviews say that the upstairs AC rooms are quieter, but not while we stayed there, We were in room #26 which is in the corner facing the beach. There was a reggae band that played until pretty late and even that wasn't that bad. The problem came around 3:30am when a group of tourists along with some locals were talking loud and smoking pot on the beach in the patio chairs supposedly for hotel guests. Now, I am not appalled by this, however we just wanted to get some sleep. Since we were coming to the end of 2 weeks of jungle/cayes, we really needed rest so we switched to the SunBreeze Hotel for our last night.

Room - AC worked great, shower (no tub) was fine, good water pressure. Bed comfort was typical of a budget hotel, the wooden board under the mattress creaked every time you rolled over. Closet had plenty of space for baggage.

Here's the deal..if you are the kind of person who can sleep through lots of noise and you plan on only using your room for sleep and shower, then Ruby's is a good budget choice. Definitely go to Ruby's Cafe for Cinnamon rolls in the morning. They are awesome!

“Stay away”

Ruby's Hotel

We stayed at this place on the recommendation of a friend. What a dump. The bed was like sleeping on rocks covered with a sheet. (we were on the top floor facing the ocean in the corner)The place was crawling with roaches and no one cleaned the bathtub the whole time we were there, I finally had to go across the street to a little store and get some cleaner and did it my self. all the deck chairs on the beach (if that's what you could call it) were broken, along with all the chairs along the breezeway. It's not a hotel its a hostel and poor one at that.

Arrived in San Pedro and Ruby's full but got in Room #26 after two nights elsewhere. Loved it....new airconditioning that worked...very clean....hot water. Ocean front balcony and quiet. All for $60 USD. Go downstairs in the morning for coffee and hot Johnnycakes and eat on the balcony. Walk to restaurants, dive shops and airport....great to be in the center of town if you don't want the isolated resort feel.

We stayed at Ruby's Feb. 5-13, 2008. It was the perfect low-cost, no-frills on-the-beach hotel. Our room (#26) was on the second floor with a balcony overlooking the beach and sea. We would sit there in the sun, watching folks walk by and listening to the palm trees in the wind. The room had air conditioning, a nice-sized bathroom and a great view. The only negative was a pretty hard king-sized bed with thin pillows. The fact that the sunrise wakes you up through the thin curtains could be taken as a negative by some! The staff was very friendly and we loved that we could go down one flight of stairs to get morning coffee and pastries. Highly recommended!

“Best budget hotel in Ambergris Caye”

Ruby's Hotel

I meticulously researched my trip (traveling with my brother) before booking and Ruby's Hotel seemed like the best deal -- after staying there for a week, I can back that up with 1st-hand experience. While in San Pedro, we passed every other "budget hotel/inn" in town and we were really glad we chose Ruby's as all the others looked pretty bad. For its class, Ruby's is tops: in other words, if you can't afford Ramon's Village Resort then try Ruby's Hotel (book in advance to get the better rooms).

They don't get a 5-star review, however, because they didn't exceed my expectations, just met them. It was exactly as I expected, nothing more nothing less.

Pro: great location; daily, punctual cleaning; soap/towels provided, nice 2nd/3rd floor decks; nice dock; above-average bathroom with H/C shower; two fans provided; two bed-side stands and a small half-closet; discount from Ruby's for SEArious snorkeling tours; plenty of beach chairs/loungers

Con: sort of dim - it would've been nice to have a lamp in the room for extra lighting; most rooms don't get good breeze; biggest issue: LOUD. We even had earplugs but that only helped somewhat. Granted, we liked to sleep late but really the noise never stops and I can only imagine what it's like at other (non-beachfront) budget hotels. I'd guess noise is a huge issue at all the hotel/inns in San Pedro actually, so I doubt Ruby's is any worse than usual. I wouldn't say it's a huge problem per se, but if you're a light sleeper bring earplugs (or get an air-conditioned room).
