My friend and I just returned from a fantastic trip to Belize, which included some time in the Cayo District (western part of the country--a must) and in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. We read all of the good reviews for this place and figured we had to try it--we were not disappointed. If you are the kind of traveller who needs luxury pamering, this is not the place for you, but if you are a go with the flow kind of traveler who is fine with comfortable accommodations and yummy breakfasts (beg for the French toast), you will not be disppointed. And the service that the owners/hosts (Cindy and Renita) provide is phenominal. They are really nice and know EVERYONE on the island and can make your stay a much more rewarding experience (which tour guides are the best, restaurants to try, places to shop for certain items, etc. etc.). Bikes are available for free use, as are beach towels, and they do tihngs that go above and beyond (like mailing your postcards that you forgot to do before heading to the airport, or loaning you a beach bag during your stay). While you are in San Pedro, do not miss the Mayan fish at Elvi's--my taste buds didn't know what to do.
As a side note, I strongly recommend to active travelers to not miss caving in the Actun Tunichil Muknal in the Cayo District. Do some research on it beforehand to see if it's something that would be up your alley--it is a once in a lifetime experience. And if you are an animal lover, don't miss the Belize Zoo on the mainland. Get in touch with Sharon, the zoo director, and for a small donation to the zoo ($50US) we were able to get in a cage w/ Sharon and pet a jaguar (who was on the outside of the cage) and also had it lick our faces. The zoo has been a labor of love for Sharon and her team, who does an amazing amount of conservation education and does not get one cent from the Belizean government. Any donation you give will be put to good use. If you want some history on the zoo before heading down there, read *The Last Macaw,* which just came out and gives a history of how the zoo got started and the politics of animal preservation in Belize.

We highly recommend Changes in Latitude (CIL). We spent 5 days at CIL and most of it was with Belize being at the bulls-eye of the first tropical storm of the season. This was not part of our plan but we adapted quickly. Cindy and Renita were great. They kept us dry and were always there for anything we needed, but kept in the background so we could lounge around without feeling we were in someone else’s home. They know the island inside and out and were a critical source of information regarding excursions, restaurants and general guidance. And, the breakfasts were great.
The location of CIL was perfect. It is just the right distance away from downtown – not so close as to be noisy but close enough to walk or, better yet, take one of CIL’s bikes. There is a lot of development on the island and it is quite spread out without easy means of getting around. But there is only one downtown. It is small, funky and fun and you don’t want to miss it. The downtown is where you find the local-owned establishments and where the people that live on the island do business and hang out. They are beautiful, charming and gracious people and were an important part of our Belize experience. If we had stayed at one of the resorts further from downtown not only would we have been limited to contrived resort restaurants but we would have missed the real ‘vibe’ of the island.

Hey if anyone is headed to San Pedro to go out on the Tradewinds catamaran - do yourself a favor and go in a day or 2 early or stay a day or 2 afterwards and enjoy the hospitality of Renita and Cindy at their fabulous B&B! It's a great way to start or end your trip! Very relaxing and the girls are the best - and the pier for Tradewinds is literally right next door at the Belize Yacht Club! In fact the Yacht Club extends pool privleges to the guests of the B&B! It's convenient, relaxing and a great way to experience San Pedro.
