My husband and I stayed at the Mayan Princess from November 3-10, 2007. We enjoyed everything about it!
As others have posted, the hotel is in the middle of town. It's within walking distance to several restaurants: Reef Restaurant, Lily's, Elvi's, Jambel's, Fido's, etc. It's also close to the Island Ferry if you choose to go north or south of the island. Additionally, Amigos del Mar Dive Shop, is almost in front of the hotel so that's very convenient if you are diving with them.
The hotel has three floors. We stayed in room #18, which was on the third floor. The hotel does not have elevators but the staff brought our bags up to our room. Our room had a king size bed (which was a bit hard but was tolerable), a kitchenette, a sitting area with a hide-a-bed, TV, two chairs and a coffee table, a small bathroom (tub/shower/toilet) with the vanity outside the bathroom and a very niced sized balcony.
The kitchenette had a small refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, two-burner stove and glasses/plates/silverware for four people, one pot and two fry pans. Definitely enough to make breakfast every morning (which we did after purchasing food from "Super Buy", which is about two blocks away.)
The refrigerator was a decent size for a weeks stay. It had a small freezer where we were able to put a small bag of ice in and also were able to put the ice trays in. In the rest of the fridge, we were able to almost fit a case of Beliken's and liter bottles of Crystal water (both purchased from the distributor at the south end) along with a dozen eggs, some ham, bacon and cheese.
The balcony, with it's french doors, had a plastic table with four plastic chairs. It also had hooks that you could hang a hammock on (get the hammock from the front desk.) We used the hooks to hang our dive gear on. (We noticed a lot of dragonflies in the morning from the balcony flying around but they didn't bother us.)
The shower worked fine and we always had enough hot water and water pressure to do what we needed to do. The only complaint we had was we never got fresh towels. We probably could've asked for them but we always found other things to do than worry about fresh towels.
The A/C worked great and sometimes, we even turned if off at night and let the doors open to catch the breeze. However, at times, Fido's was a bit loud or the next door neighbor's dog was barking and we'd just close the doors.
The beach in front of the hotel has some older lounge chairs. You can get pads to put on the chairs at the front desk. However, most of the time, we noticed locals using the chairs so really, there wasn't anywhere to sit. This didn't bother us too much since we spent most of our time diving. Other than that, the beach is somewhat clean. As far as swimming goes, there's some weedy areas but as long as you avoid those, you should be okay. We also noticed three sting rays in the area.
The hotel offers continental breakfast with breads that you can bring up to your room to make toast, zuchinni bread, carrot muffins, ground coffee (to make in your room), orange juice, bananas, oranges and apples.
They also have one PC with free internet access from 7 am to 9 pm daily.
There is no hotel bar but you can either buy/bring your own or just take a quick walk into town or on the beach and you'll be having a cold Beliken in no time.
Overall, we would definitely stay here again. It's location, cleanliness and staff's friendliness was perfect!
