We arrived in San Pedro and checked into a room at Banana Beach Resort on January 22, 2008. From all counts, this was the biggest bang for your buck on the island. The staff was friendly and the pool was small but nice. As we walked into our room we were hit with a really intense musty smell. It took a few minutes before we realized that we were smelling was mold. One of the walls below the window in one bedroom was severely water stained – the door jams, spa jets, windowsills and air conditioning unit had noticeable black mold growing on them. After taking pictures and showing them to the front desk, a manager was called and we were immediately given a full refund.
I wouldn’t advise you not to stay here as I’m sure not all rooms are in the same condition as ours were. But if you’re looking for a place that you want to return to at the end of the day, even without the mold, this isn’t it. Banyan Bay a few doors down is a much safer bet and the staff there is very accommodating.
Happy trails!
